Kondaa at RCDB

Kondaa is a steel roller coaster at Walibi Belgium in Wavre, Belgium.[2] First unveiled at the IAAPA 2018 Expo, the coaster marks the end of a three-year park investment plan and upon opening became the tallest and fastest coaster in the Benelux region, as well as the park's ninth coaster.[3][4] Kondaa features a top speed of 70.2 mph (113.0 km/h), a notable 15 airtime moments, and the world's first non-inverting cobra roll element.[5]

History

[edit]

Following the opening of Pulsar the year prior,[6] in June 2017, Walibi announced a major multi-year plan to redesign and transform the park, with an accumulated total of €100,000,000 to be invested on new rides and parkwide theming, starting with the Tiki-Waka coaster and Exotic World area in 2018.[7][8] The announcement also listed a major new steel coaster as the star investment of 2021, with early artwork showcasing an out-and-back mega coaster located near the upcoming Tiki-Waka.[9]

Walibi officials shortlisted three major European suppliers for the project, eventually contracting Intamin to build the coaster following the 2017 annual IAAPA Berlin expo.[1] At the 2018, annual IAAPA Orlando expo, Intamin and park operator Compagnie des Alpes formally unveiled two new coaster projects in a joint announcement; the then-unnamed Toutatis at Parc Astérix and the mega coaster for Walibi Belgium, which was confirmed once again to be debuting in 2021.[10] The Walibi coaster layout was unveiled in full detail, and was confirmed to debut with a top height of 164 feet (50 m) and a top speed of 70.2 mph (113.0 km/h), making it the tallest and fastest coaster in the Benelux region upon opening (beating Goliath at Walibi Holland for height and Fury at Bobbejaanland for speed). It would also feature a total track length of 3,937 feet (1,200 m) and two world's-first elements; a wall stall and a non-inverting cobra roll.[11] Kondaa opened to the public on May 8, 2021.[12]

In August 2019, land clearing began on the site, indicating that construction was due to start shortly. An existing building behind the park was also razed in early 2020. Following the construction of the station, the coaster went vertical in July 2020, with track being installed at a rapid pace. The signature non-inverted cobra roll and the ride's tallest lift hill were topped off and completed in early August, with the ride layout being completed the following month.[13] Thematic work would begin to take shape around the area, and in late November the ride's then-unannounced name was divulged from the newly constructed entrance sign; Kondaa.[14] This was later confirmed by Walibi themselves.

On December 17, 2020, Kondaa passed its first full-circuit test run, and Walibi soon began releasing teasers on their YouTube channel.[15][16] Kondaa's first onride POV was released on May 5, 2021, and following an easing of COVID-19 restrictions, the park made plans to debut the ride on May 8, 2021.[17][18] Kondaa premiered on the planned date to great public anticipation.[12]

Ride experience

[edit]

Riders are dispatched from the station into the initial 164-foot (50 m) lift hill at a 45 degree angle. Upon cresting the hill, riders hit an 80° drop twisting sharply to the right, and into a 38-metre (125 ft) tall airtime, producing G forces as low as -1.3 Gs. The train veers up into a 30-metre (98 ft) tall, sharply outwards banked airtime hill, and into the signature non-inverting cobra roll. Riders exit the element into another airtime hill, followed immediately by a sweeping turnaround, a wall-stall, and an overbanked turnaround at 115°. Now heading back to the station, riders encounter the following elements in this order, which are taken at a high speed and key airtime features; an airtime hill, a side-banked double down that has been advertised as a world's first, another airtime hill, an S curve, a Stengel Dive, S-jump, and a trio of bunny hills. Following this sequence, riders pop up into the brake run at a 25° angle, and make a 180° turn to the left into the station.[citation needed]

Characteristics

[edit]

Kondaa is 164 feet (50 m) in height, has an approximate track length of 1,200 metres (3,900 ft), and can hit speeds of up to 70.2 mph (113.0 km/h). The coaster focuses mainly on airtime, producing negative g-forces as low as 1.3 Gs and inducing weightlessness throughout much of the layout, packing a full 15 airtime points. Kondaa utilizes a pair of 24 passenger trains, which will enable the ride to have a theoretical capacity of 1080 pph.

In addition to airtime, Kondaa features several elements that are said to be world's firsts, most prominently its non-inverting cobra roll. This element works exactly like a cobra roll inversion (which can be found on Walibi Belgium's Cobra roller coaster), except that the element is a little more elongated and twists outwards instead on inwards in order to avoid going upside down. Other proclaimed worlds-firsts include a wall stall (although similar, if not identical, elements have been appearing on Rocky Mountain Construction coasters for years prior, and also debuted on the Jurassic World VelociCoaster just days after), and a side-banked double down.[19]

History

Announcement and Development

Kondaa was first announced at the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Expo in November 2018 as a key component of Walibi Belgium's ambitious €100 million five-year investment plan, overseen by parent company to renovate and expand the park. This initiative aimed to overhaul approximately 75% of the park's offerings, with Kondaa serving as a flagship project to enhance visitor experiences and attract thrill-seekers across the region. The project marked a significant collaboration between and Swiss manufacturer Amusement Rides, who designed Kondaa as a mega emphasizing groundbreaking features, including the world's first non-inverting cobra roll to deliver intense airtime without traditional inversions. With a dedicated budget of €25 million, the coaster was engineered to stand as the tallest at 50 meters and fastest at 113 km/h in the countries, underscoring its role in elevating the park's status among European attractions. Leading up to its opening, pre-opening marketing campaigns in late 2019 and 2020 featured and teaser videos that highlighted the ride's mythical theming inspired by a native tribal , building excitement and positioning Kondaa as an unmissable adventure in the expanded Exotic World zone. The name "Kondaa," evoking a powerful creature, was officially revealed in November 2020, further amplifying anticipation through and park promotions.

Construction and Opening

Construction of Kondaa commenced in November 2019, aligning with Walibi Belgium's broader master plan initiated in 2016–2017 to revitalize the park. The project faced disruptions from the , including a three-week suspension of work due to government restrictions, alongside broader industry challenges in material supply chains and labor availability that extended the overall timeline. By mid-2020, significant progress was evident, with the lift hill, station, and key elements like the non-inverting cobra roll nearing completion. Track installation advanced rapidly through the summer and fall of 2020, culminating in the completion of the full 1,200-meter layout by late that year. Testing phases followed, beginning with initial runs in December 2020 and continuing into early 2021 to ensure operational safety and performance. A soft opening occurred on May 7, 2021, allowing park staff to experience the ride ahead of the public debut. Kondaa officially opened to the public on May 8, 2021, marking the start of Walibi Belgium's 2021 season following the easing of restrictions. The launch encountered initial operational hurdles, particularly in managing queues amid surging visitor demand after the park's extended closures due to the and subsequent regional flooding. This high interest underscored Kondaa's status as the park's flagship attraction, with wait times quickly exceeding expectations during the early operating days.

Design and Technology

Track Layout and Elements

Kondaa features a total track length of 3,937 feet (1,200 ), reaching a maximum height of 164 feet (50 ) and a top speed of 70.2 mph (113 km/h). The ride employs a fast chain inclined at approximately 45 degrees, propelling trains to the crest before descending into the layout's sequence of elements. With zero inversions, the coaster emphasizes airtime and lateral forces through its terrain-hugging design, incorporating 15 distinct airtime moments across hills, turns, and specialized maneuvers. The layout begins with an 80-degree twisted first drop, delivering riders into a high-speed plunge that sets the pace for the subsequent elements. Following the drop, the sequence includes a series of airtime hills, starting with an initial camelback hill, then transitioning to a 105-foot (32-meter) outward-banked airtime hill that maximizes floatation through its steep banking. Next comes the world's first non-inverting cobra roll, a 98-foot (30-meter) element that simulates inversion-like motion without flipping the train. This is followed by a speed hill, a ground-hugging curve, and the innovative wall stall, where the train ascends a vertical wall to hang momentarily in near-weightlessness for about two seconds. Further along, the track features a 115-degree over-banked high-speed turn and the world's first side-banked double down, a steep, twisting drop pair that amplifies forces through lateral banking. Additional elements include eight more airtime-inducing hills and turns, culminating in a magnetic run and a 180-degree turnaround leading back to the station. The entire circuit, designed by , utilizes a backbone-style track system recognized with a Red Dot Product Design award for its structural efficiency and aesthetic integration. In 2022, enhancements were added to the track infrastructure, including color projection mapping and dynamic lighting effects from Highlite International, which illuminate key elements like the lift hill, cobra roll, and wall stall during nighttime operations, enhancing visual drama without altering the physical layout.

Trains and Safety Systems

Kondaa operates with two fully themed trains manufactured by Intamin, each comprising six cars that accommodate 24 riders arranged in two rows of two seats across per car. The ergonomic seating design promotes comfort and freedom of movement, allowing riders to experience the coaster's 15 airtime moments without excessive restriction. Riders are secured using over-the-shoulder lap bars that provide a firm hold during high-speed dives and inversions, such as the non-inverting cobra roll. These restraints are engineered for smooth operation and minimal discomfort, contributing to the ride's reputation for intense yet accessible thrills. The coaster also features automated block braking to ensure safe intervals between trains and comprehensive emergency protocols, including specialized evacuation equipment installed by Escape Mobility to transport riders from elevated positions to ground level efficiently. To support accessibility, Walibi Belgium offers easy-access entry via the ride exit for persons with disabilities, accompanied by up to three supporters, with transfer aids available to assist boarding the trains where physical transfer is required.

Ride Experience

Queue and Theming

The queue and theming of Kondaa draw from an ancient legend of a frightful creature that a brave warrior tamed 5,000 years ago by taking its egg, which now hatches to release the monster Kondaa. This narrative evokes themes of ancient rituals and overpowering natural forces, embodied by the mythical creature, with theming including a temple structure in the surrounding Exotic World area. The pre-ride queue snakes through this immersive environment via switchbacks, with entertainment provided by panoramic views of the coaster's imposing first drop and ongoing operations that heighten anticipation. The queue line features theming emphasizing the ride's spectacle and integrates into the Exotic World zone at , with thematic signage depicting the creature's legend and merchandise tie-ins such as apparel and souvenirs inspired by the creature, all introduced upon the ride's 2021 opening. Following its debut, enhancements to the theming included color projection and dynamic lighting installations in 2022, illuminating the temple and creature elements for greater dramatic impact, particularly during evening operations. As of November 2025, no further significant changes to the queue theming have been reported.

Layout and Sensations

Upon dispatch from the station, riders ascend a steep 45-degree lift hill reaching 50 meters high, providing an efficient and quick climb that builds anticipation rapidly. Cresting the lift, the train dives into an 80-degree side-twisting first drop, accelerating to 113 km/h and subjecting riders to a powerful surge of speed and lateral g-forces as the track banks sharply. Emerging from the drop, the layout immediately delivers a first airtime hill followed by an outward banked airtime hill, where riders experience intense uplifting and floating sensations as the crests and falls, emphasizing the coaster's focus on ejector airtime. This transitions seamlessly into the world's first non-inverting cobra roll, a unique element featuring side-by-side rolling maneuvers that maintain an upright orientation while inducing disorienting twists and sustained velocity without full inversion. The roll's design contributes to a momentary pacing shift, allowing riders to catch their breath amid the ongoing directional changes. The sequence continues with a speed airtime hill and a ground-hugging curve that skims close to the terrain, heightening the sense of vulnerability before arriving at the innovative wall stall—the first of its kind—where the train halts vertically against a wall for two seconds of pure, hanging weightlessness, amplifying the adrenaline through prolonged zero-g exposure. From there, a 115-degree over-banked high turn pulls riders sharply, followed by the world's first side-banked double down, which combines a deceptive pull-up with a subsequent plunge, delivering layered airtime and lateral forces that keep the intensity high. The latter portion of the approximately 1:30 ride incorporates eight additional elements, including multiple airtime hills and a tightening , shifting the pacing from the front half's aggressive drops and turns to a relentless barrage of sustained ejector moments and floaters across 15 distinct sensations overall. This progression creates a dynamic flow, where initial forceful accelerations give way to euphoric, repeated lifts that dominate the experience, culminating in a brake run and 180-degree turn back to the station.

Operation and Maintenance

Capacity and Rider Requirements

Kondaa operates with a theoretical hourly throughput of 1,080 riders, achieved through two trains each accommodating 24 passengers, a ride duration of 1 minute and 30 seconds, and time allocated for loading and unloading. Rider eligibility requires a minimum of 1.30 m (4 ft 3 in) to ride and a maximum restricted to 1.95 m (6 ft 5 in) to ensure proper restraint fit. Standard restrictions prohibit loose articles such as phones, keys, or bags on the ride, with visitors required to store them in provided lockers at their own risk to prevent loss or injury. Operators may deny access based on individual weight or physical condition if it compromises safety, though specific per-rider limits are not publicly detailed beyond general park guidelines. As a high-thrill attraction featuring intense speeds, forces up to 4.5 G, and multiple airtime moments, Kondaa includes health advisories recommending against riding for those with conditions such as heart problems, high , , or , with all participants assuming personal risk. For accessibility, riders with disabilities may obtain an Easy Pass using a valid European Disability Card or equivalent, allowing a companion and priority queuing where feasible, in line with Walibi Belgium's park-wide initiatives to support while adhering to safety protocols.

Technical Operation and Upkeep

Kondaa's daily operations adhere to the EN 13814-2, which mandates comprehensive pre-opening inspections to ensure safe , operation, and testing of amusement rides. These inspections, conducted by qualified personnel before the park opens, include visual and functional checks of the track structure for structural integrity, lubrication of wheel bearings and guide rails to minimize and , verification of magnetic functionality for reliable deceleration, and of sensors monitoring position, speed, and block zone occupancy. The ride's control systems, developed by 's partner Inautec GmbH, integrate automated dispatch mechanisms that synchronize train loading, restraint securing, and dispatch intervals to optimize throughput while incorporating redundancies. These systems employ PC-based controllers to manage block zones, preventing collisions by halting trains if proximity sensors detect anomalies, and enable immediate stops via hydraulic or magnetic overrides in response to faults or operator intervention. (Note: controllers referenced in Inautec implementations for Intamin coasters.) Seasonal maintenance at addresses environmental factors, particularly during the winter off-season when outdoor rides like Kondaa are closed; trains are removed from the track and stored indoors to protect against weather damage, corrosion, and mechanical degradation. The coaster's 2022 lighting system, featuring color projection and LED fixtures from Highlite International, receives targeted servicing during these periods to inspect wiring, bulb integrity, and alignment for continued thematic enhancement. Operators at undergo mandatory training aligned with EN 13814 requirements, emphasizing safety protocols such as procedures, restraint verification, and anomaly reporting to maintain ride integrity. This includes hands-on simulations for control faults, discrepancies, and malfunctions, ensuring rapid response to operational issues without compromising passenger safety.
