Fictional character biography

[edit]

Proxima Midnight is a member of Thanos' Black Order. Thanos chose her for her expert combat skills. Proxima is the wife of fellow Order member Corvus Glaive. She is sent to Earth to retrieve an Infinity Gem from Namor,[5] but comes into contact with the New Avengers.[6] Proxima is humiliated by Thanos' disapproval of her actions as well as the fact that Namor does not actually possess the Gem.[7] Proxima and the rest of the Order are directed by Namor to Wakanda to search for the Gem, but are distracted when Ebony Maw revealed the location of Thane, Thanos' son. Thane wants nothing to do with his father and imprisons him and Proxima in amber.[8]

Corvus meets up with Namor, who frees Proxima and Thanos, and asks that they join his Cabal due to his own anger towards Earth. However, Namor soon finds himself hating the Cabal's tactics and vows to work with the Illuminati to defeat them. Namor is betrayed, with him and the Cabal being trapped in a universe that is going to be destroyed. They all manage to escape into the Ultimate Marvel universe and vow to get revenge.[9] The Cabal members escape the destruction of the multiverse via a life raft and end up on Battleworld.[10]

Proxima Midnight returns to her own universe when the multiverse is restored.[11] She meets with Thanos and a cloaked figure, later revealed to be Hela, and works with Hela in an attempt to retrieve Mjolnir.[12] Ultimately, Proxima and Hela are humiliated and forced to return empty handed. To prove herself worthy, Hela kills Proxima in front of Thanos.[13][3]

During the "No Surrender" arc, Proxima Midnight is resurrected by the Challenger and battles the Grandmaster's Lethal Legion.[14]

Proxima Midnight is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. Created by writer Jonathan Hickman, she first appeared in New Avengers #8 (September 2013). She is depicted as one of the most ruthless and skilled warriors in the cosmos and a loyal member of the Black Order, an elite cadre of deadly aliens assembled by the Mad Titan Thanos to conquer planets and enforce his will across the universe.[1][2] As a natural-born fighter with an insatiable bloodlust, she plays a pivotal role in his campaigns of destruction, often leading assaults alongside her husband, Corvus Glaive, and showcasing her prowess in battles against Earth's mightiest heroes.[3][2]

Background and Role in the Black Order

Proxima Midnight's origins are largely unknown in the comics, where she is portrayed as a devoted servant of Thanos and part of his found family of cosmic outcasts in the Black Order. (Note: Her backstory as an orphaned recruit raised by Thanos aligns more closely with her portrayal in adaptations like the MCU.) She forms the core of the original five-member Black Order—alongside Corvus Glaive, Black Dwarf, Ebony Maw, and Supergiant—tasked with subjugating worlds in preparation for Thanos's rule and retrieving artifacts like the Infinity Stones.[2] Her marriage to Corvus Glaive strengthens the group's familial bonds, with the couple often operating as Thanos's primary enforcers during incursions into realms like Earth.[2] Notable exploits include Supergiant's attack on the Jean Grey School for Higher Learning, where she clashed with the X-Men but was defeated, and Proxima's assault on Atlantis in search of an Infinity Gem, leaving it in ruins after Namor proved not to possess it; she later joined the Cabal—a secret alliance of villains including Thanos—to manipulate universal events.[2]

Powers and Abilities

Proxima Midnight possesses superhuman physical attributes honed by her alien physiology and rigorous training under Thanos, including enhanced strength, durability, agility, and stamina that allow her to overpower multiple superheroes in combat.[3] She is a master tactician and hand-to-hand fighter, favoring brutal, close-quarters melee that complements her role as a frontline conqueror.[1] Her signature weapon, the Quantum Spear (forged from a star trapped within a quantum singularity), is a versatile and devastating artifact capable of transforming into three tracers of black light that can disintegrate targets almost instantly, piercing nearly any defense; its toxin and energy properties can severely injure and depower foes like the Hulk.[3][2] This spear's exotic energy properties make her a unique threat, enabling her to lay waste to entire teams such as the Avengers during the Infinity event's universal incursion.[3]

Notable Appearances and Legacy

Prominently featured in the Infinity (2013) crossover event after her debut, Proxima Midnight established herself as a recurring antagonist in Marvel's cosmic storylines, clashing with heroes in titles like Avengers, New Avengers, and Uncanny X-Men.[1] Key moments include her temporary entrapment in cosmic amber by Thanos's son Thane, from which she later regenerated, and her death at the hands of Hela during an alliance to seize Mjolnir from Jane Foster.[2] Despite such setbacks, she has reformed as part of later Black Order iterations, continuing to embody Thanos's ideology of death and domination. Her character extends beyond comics into adaptations like Avengers: Infinity War (2018), where she is portrayed as an unrelenting invader of Earth, further cementing her status as a symbol of cosmic terror in the Marvel Universe.[4]

Creation and publication

Creation

Proxima Midnight was created by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Jerome Opeña as part of Marvel Comics' 2013 Infinity crossover storyline.[5] The character debuted in a single panel in New Avengers vol. 3 #8 (September 2013), written by Hickman with art by Mike Deodato Jr., where she was introduced as one of Thanos' elite lieutenants during his invasion of Earth.[6][5] This initial appearance tied into the broader expansion of Thanos' forces, establishing the Black Order—a cabal of deadly, culls from across the universe selected for their unparalleled skills in conquest and destruction.[7] Hickman conceived Proxima Midnight specifically as the premier combatant among Thanos' ranks, emphasizing her role as a lethal warrior unmatched in direct confrontation. "A predator in every sense of the word, Proxima Midnight is the greatest warrior in Thanos' army," Hickman stated, highlighting her as "the best actual combatant within not only Thanos' lieutenants, but within his whole army."[7] Her design and function were integral to the Infinity event, where the Black Order's dynamics amplified Thanos' threat as he exploited the Avengers' absence amid an intergalactic war with the Builders.[7]

Publication history

Proxima Midnight first appeared as a member of Thanos' Black Order in New Avengers vol. 3 #8 (September 2013), written by Jonathan Hickman with art by Mike Deodato Jr., serving as part of the buildup to the Infinity crossover event. She received her first full and named appearance in the Infinity #1 miniseries (October 2013), also by Hickman and Opeña, where she and the Black Order invaded Earth under Thanos' command to seize the Infinity Gems. Throughout the six-issue Infinity miniseries (October 2013–January 2014), Proxima played a prominent antagonistic role, battling Avengers teams and contributing to the event's cosmic scale conflict against Thanos' forces. Following Infinity, Proxima Midnight featured in several ongoing titles as a recurring enforcer for Thanos and the Black Order. In Thanos vol. 2 (2016–2018) by Donny Cates, Proxima supported Thanos in battles against cosmic entities and the Avengers, emphasizing her loyalty and combat prowess in storylines exploring Thanos' god-like aspirations. Her resurrection arc was central to The Unworthy Thor #1–5 (2017), written by Jason Aaron with art by Olivier Coipel, where she confronted a depowered Thor alongside Corvus Glaive, highlighting her role in Thanos' schemes to claim Mjolnir. Proxima Midnight's most significant recent storyline culminated in the Avengers: No Surrender event (2018), a 16-issue weekly crossover in Avengers vol. 5 #675–690, where she and the Black Order allied with the Grandmaster in a contest against the Avengers, leading to her apparent death but later resurrections in tie-ins. By the end of 2018, she had appeared in 47 comic issues across various Marvel titles.[8] Post-2018 appearances have been more sporadic and minor, including a supporting role in Black Order #1–5 (October–December 2018) by Cullen Bunn, where the team operated independently before returning to Thanos' service. She made brief cameos in Star #1 (February 2020) and History of the Marvel Universe #6 (March 2020), recapping cosmic events. In 2024, Proxima returned in Phoenix vol. 1 #3 (October 2024), written by Stephanie Phillips with art by Alessandro Miracolo, interrupting Jean Grey's team and battling the Phoenix Force host as part of a Black Order assault.[9] As of November 2025, Proxima Midnight has appeared in 79 comic issues, with no major storylines published since the Phoenix arc, and her last significant antagonistic role in the Avengers: No Surrender event.[8]

Characterization

Fictional biography

Little is known about Proxima Midnight's early life or origins prior to her service to Thanos. Trained rigorously from a young age, she emerged as one of Thanos' most formidable warriors, rising through the ranks to join the Black Order, his elite cadre of lieutenants dedicated to enforcing his will across the galaxy. As the consort and wife of fellow Black Order member Corvus Glaive, Proxima shared a deep personal bond with him, marked by mutual loyalty amid the group's internal rivalries and Thanos' domineering command.[1] During the Infinity event in 2013, Proxima Midnight played a pivotal role in Thanos' invasion of Earth as he sought to claim the Infinity Gems and eradicate his offspring. She led Black Order forces in assaulting New York City, clashing with the Mighty Avengers and overpowering heroes like Luke Cage in brutal hand-to-hand combat. To secure the alliance of Atlantis, she coerced Namor into joining Thanos by threatening his kingdom, then spearheaded the attack on Wakanda, targeting the Illuminati in the Necropolis, where the group clashed with Earth's heroes including Black Panther. Her campaign extended to the Necropolis, where she confronted the Illuminati— including Iron Man, Captain America, and others—in a bid to crush Earth's defenders, only to be thwarted by their strategic counterplan that isolated and overwhelmed Black Order members. Ultimately, amid the battle in Greenland, Proxima was imprisoned alongside Thanos and much of the Black Order in a cosmic amber construct created by Thane, Thanos' son, suspending them in stasis and halting their rampage. In the years following her entrapment, Proxima was briefly freed by Namor as part of the Cabal's desperate efforts to avert multiversal incursions by destroying alternate Earths, allowing her to survive the collision that formed Battleworld. There, she navigated the chaotic landscape under Doctor Doom's rule, clashing sporadically with heroes like Thor. She battled over the enchanted hammer Mjolnir but was ultimately killed by Hela, who impaled her with her own spear. She also demonstrated her prowess against the Hulk during the Infinity conflict, using her spear to bind and revert him to his human form, Bruce Banner. Proxima Midnight's loyalty to Thanos remained unwavering, even as internal tensions within the Black Order simmered, including her grief-stricken reactions to Corvus Glaive's repeated deaths at Thanos' hands. In 2018's Avengers: No Surrender storyline, she was resurrected by the cosmic entity known as the Challenger, who selected the Black Order to represent him in a grand contest against the Grandmaster's Lethal Legion and the Avengers. Reinvigorated, Proxima led renewed assaults on Earth's heroes, engaging in intense battles that highlighted her role in Thanos' ongoing conquests, though the Black Order's efforts ultimately faltered against the combined might of the Avengers. After this, she rejoined the Black Order in their 2019 quest to interpret and fulfill Thanos's legacy, battling rivals across the cosmos in the Black Order miniseries. Subsequent appearances have been minor, with no major updates to her status as of 2023.[1]

Powers and abilities

Proxima Midnight possesses superhuman strength, speed, stamina, and endurance derived from her alien physiology, allowing her to overpower opponents on the level of Earth's mightiest heroes. Her enhanced durability grants her nigh-invulnerability to physical trauma, enabling her to endure falls from orbit through Earth's atmosphere without injury and resist extreme environmental conditions such as vacuum exposure or high-velocity impacts. These attributes remain rooted in her extraterrestrial biology.[1] As Thanos' elite general, Proxima Midnight demonstrates mastery in hand-to-hand combat, marksmanship, and tactical warfare, making her a formidable strategist in large-scale battles. Her combat prowess is honed through years of service in Thanos' conquests, where she excels in close-quarters fighting and precise weapon handling, often coordinating Black Order assaults with lethal efficiency.[1] Her primary weapon is a quantum spear forged by Thanos, containing a star compressed within a quantum singularity that imbues it with stellar energies. When thrown, the spear can transform into three homing tracers of black light, delivering devastating kinetic and gravitational force capable of piercing nearly any defense and killing targets in seconds. The weapon also absorbs gamma radiation to depower foes like the Hulk. These functions operate through technological manipulation of the trapped star's properties, including mass alteration to increase density and weight for enhanced impact.[3][1][2]

Television

Proxima Midnight has been portrayed in several animated Marvel television series, primarily as a member of Thanos' Black Order, emphasizing her role as a fierce warrior in interstellar conflicts.[10] In the Disney XD series Guardians of the Galaxy (2015–2019), Proxima Midnight is voiced by Kari Wahlgren.[11] She appears in multiple episodes, including "Undercover Angle" (Season 1, Episode 20, aired October 25, 2015), where she battles Gamora during a Black Order infiltration, and "Stuck in the Metal with You" (Season 1, Episode 21, aired November 1, 2015), involving Thanos' galactic assaults.[12] Her depictions highlight coordinated attacks with other Black Order members against the Guardians, such as in episodes featuring invasions of key planets and artifact hunts.[13] Proxima Midnight also features in Avengers Assemble (2013–2019), again voiced by Kari Wahlgren.[14] She debuts in "New Frontiers" (Season 2, Episode 25, aired September 13, 2015), portrayed as a brutal enforcer leading robotic forces under Thanos during a planetary plunder, clashing with the Avengers in an Infinity War-inspired arc.[15] She returns in "Avengers World" (Season 3, Episode 1, aired June 26, 2016), aiding the Black Order in freeing Thanos from captivity and escalating threats to Earth. These appearances underscore her tactical savagery in team-based assaults on superhero teams.[16] An alternate version of Proxima Midnight appears in the Disney+ series What If...? (2021–present), voiced by Carrie Coon. In Season 1, Episode 2, "What If... T'Challa Became a Star-Lord?" (aired August 18, 2021), she serves as a high-ranking guard for the Collector's museum alongside Ebony Maw in an alternate timeline where T'Challa joins the Ravagers as Star-Lord.[17] This variant engages in combat during a heist for the Embers of Genesis, ambushing the Ravagers and signaling lockdowns, with dynamics altered by the Black Order's employment under the Collector rather than direct loyalty to Thanos. Animated adaptations simplify Proxima Midnight's powers from the comics, focusing on her spear-wielding combat and superhuman strength without delving into her full arsenal or backstory, while emphasizing collaborative dynamics within the Black Order during ensemble battles.[18] As of November 2025, her television portrayals remain limited to these animated series, with no confirmed live-action television appearances.[10]

Marvel Cinematic Universe

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), Proxima Midnight appears as a key member of Thanos' Black Order in Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019). She is voiced by actress Carrie Coon, who also provided facial motion capture for the character in Infinity War, while stunt performer Monique Ganderton handled the on-set physical portrayal in both films.[19][20] Coon did not reprise her voice role in Endgame due to a salary dispute with Marvel Studios, though the character has no spoken lines in that installment.[21] Depicted as Thanos' adoptive daughter and a co-leader of the Black Order, Proxima Midnight embodies ruthless ferocity and unwavering loyalty to her father, serving as a formidable general in his quest for the Infinity Stones. In Infinity War, she first features in the assault on the Asgardian refugee ship Statesman, where she and Corvus Glaive subdue the Hulk and capture Vision to extract the Mind Stone. Later, during the battle in Wakanda, Proxima wields her signature spear in a intense duel against Captain America, Black Widow, and Falcon; after overpowering them and reclaiming Corvus' glaive, she is impaled and killed when Scarlet Witch uses telekinesis to hurl the spear at her, causing her to disintegrate.[22] In Endgame, a 2014 version of Proxima is transported to the present via time travel as part of Thanos' invading army, joining the confrontation at the Avengers Compound following the Time Heist; she charges into battle alongside Outriders and is ultimately dusted in the ensuing chaos. The character's design adapts her comic origins with a more alien, heavily armored aesthetic—featuring pale blue skin, elongated horns, and reinforced plating—while her spear retains mass-shifting capabilities, allowing it to extend dramatically and generate force fields, though rendered with a sleek, metallic stylization.[23][24] Proxima Midnight's presence amplified the Black Order's threat level during MCU Phase Three, underscoring Thanos' galactic empire and the high stakes of the Infinity Saga, with Coon's gravelly, menacing vocal delivery in Infinity War enhancing her intimidating aura. As of November 2025, the character has made no further appearances in MCU projects.[25]

Video games

Proxima Midnight appears as a playable cosmic-class champion in Marvel Contest of Champions, introduced in an April 2018 update as one of Thanos's elite warriors.[26] Her gameplay emphasizes sustained combat through a mission-based mechanic where completing objectives like landing combos or parrying attacks grants Prowess Buffs, enhancing special attack damage up to 900% when fully ramped.[26] Key abilities include her Special 1 attack, which involves a dashing spear throw dealing physical damage and applying Heal Block, and her Special 2 and 3 moves that incorporate energy blasts and area-of-effect storms for crowd control.[26] As a high-damage dealer, she excels in prolonged fights against tech champions due to her class bonus, and she benefits from synergies with Black Order members like Corvus Glaive or Thanos, boosting attack ratings and fury generation in themed teams.[27] Proxima Midnight is a playable character in Marvel Future Fight, added in an April 2018 update, where she utilizes her spear for melee combos and energy attacks in story missions and versus battles against heroes. She appears as a playable member of the Black Order in Marvel Strike Force (mobile game), introduced in March 2019, focusing on team synergies that enhance damage and debuffs in squad-based tactical combat. In Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order (2019), Proxima Midnight serves as a recurring boss antagonist, leading assaults alongside the Black Order in the game's Infinity Stone-themed campaign where players battle Thanos's forces across cosmic locations like Knowhere. She is depicted as a formidable melee fighter wielding her signature spear for swift combos and energy-infused strikes, often fought in tandem with Corvus Glaive to emphasize their partnership.[28] The character is voiced by Kari Wahlgren, who delivers a commanding, ruthless tone fitting her role as Thanos's adopted daughter.[28] Proxima Midnight features as an unlockable enemy and playable character in the Avengers: Infinity War Character Pack DLC for LEGO Marvel Super Heroes 2 (2018), integrated into levels involving Thanos's invasion.[29] Her design adopts the game's signature blocky, humorous LEGO aesthetic, with exaggerated proportions and a simplified spear that serves as her primary weapon for close-range attacks and projectile tosses in combat puzzles.[29] Gameplay highlights her as a agile antagonist in boss encounters, using spear-based charges and swings to challenge heroes in lighthearted, destructible environments. She was added as an assassin-class fighter in the mobile MOBA Marvel Super War during its 2019 beta and early 2020 global release, focusing on high-mobility melee engagements. Proxima's kit revolves around spear mechanics, including a directional throw that marks enemies for bonus damage on follow-ups, a charging dash for pathing physical damage, and an ultimate that amplifies her combos with area effects, emphasizing aggressive pursuit and burst potential in team fights.[30] While not explicitly toxin-based, her abilities incorporate persistent damage through marks and sustained assaults, positioning her as an extreme-difficulty champion for skilled players. In Marvel Snap (2022–present), Proxima Midnight was introduced as a card in February 2024 during the "Black Order" season, where she costs 5 energy and gains power based on Black Order cards in hand, synergizing with Thanos-themed decks for combo plays.[31] As of November 2025, Proxima Midnight has not received major roles in new video games beyond these appearances, though her combat-oriented design—often prioritizing fast-paced spear attacks and energy bursts over deeper narrative elements from the comics—lends potential for inclusion in future titles like ongoing Marvel action games.[32] Across these appearances, she consistently functions as a high-damage dealer in Thanos-aligned synergies, amplifying team threats in multiplayer or co-op scenarios.[27]
