[edit]

Evoland was initially conceived as a game for the 24th Ludum Dare in 2012.[5] As the theme for that year's competition was "evolution", Vidal and Cannasse chose to have game play change as the player progresses, to reflect on the evolution and history of video game RPGs.[6] As a result, the game was chosen as the winner for the 24th Ludum Dare.[7]

Evoland 2

[edit]

In 2014 Shiro Games announced that they were working on a sequel to Evoland entitled Evoland 2: A Slight Case of Spacetime Continuum Disorder.[10] The game would follow the same game play and format as the first game while introducing a more complex history, new forms of gameplay, and less linearity than its predecessor.[10][11] The game was released on 25 August 2015.[12]

History

Founding

Shiro Games was founded in 2012 by industry veterans Nicolas Cannasse and Sébastien Vidal in , . The studio began as an independent developer with a small, passionate team of developers, emphasizing a collaborative environment to foster creativity. The company established its operations in the heart of the city, leveraging the region's growing tech and creative scene. The founders' initial motivation centered on creating games that balanced with depth, delivering engaging experiences that the team itself would enjoy playing. This philosophy guided their early efforts, prioritizing innovative designs over commercial pressures typical of larger studios. Cannasse and Vidal, drawing from their prior experience in game development tools and indie projects, aimed to build titles that appealed to a broad audience while offering substantial replayability and strategic elements. Shiro Games' first project originated from the 24th game jam in 2012, where the theme was "." The resulting prototype, , won the competition and served as the foundation for the studio's debut full release in 2013. This success validated their approach, transitioning the jam entry into a commercial RPG that evolved graphically and mechanically to homage classic adventure games.

Expansion and milestones

Following the initial release of in full version in 2013, Shiro Games expanded its portfolio with in 2015 and achieved a major breakout success with Northgard's launch in 2017, which sold over three million units by 2022. The studio's team grew significantly from its original four-person indie setup to over 60 employees by 2022, reaching approximately 70 by 2025, enabling parallel development on multiple titles and consistent post-launch support. Key milestones included the establishment of the publishing arm Shiro Unlimited in 2021 to support external developers, the securing of a €50 million investment from Cathay Capital in 2022 that valued the company at €150 million, and the selection of three titles—Northgard, Dune: Spice Wars, and Wartales—for official showcase at TactiCon 2024. Shiro Games maintained operational momentum through regular content releases, such as five major updates for Wartales within its first year of early access and ongoing DLC for Northgard, contributing to sustained player engagement across its catalog.

Organization

Leadership

Shiro Games was co-founded in 2012 by Nicolas Cannasse and Sebastien Vidal, who have served as its dual CEOs since inception. Cannasse, the technical lead, brings extensive expertise in game engine development, having created the Haxe programming language in 2005 as a cross-platform toolkit for applications including video games. Prior to Shiro Games, he co-founded Motion Twin, the studio behind Dead Cells, where he contributed to tool development during his tenure until 2012. Vidal, handling the business side, previously served as Chief Operating Officer (COO) at NCSoft Europe, gaining experience in game publishing and operations before partnering with Cannasse to establish the independent studio in Bordeaux, France. The leadership team includes other key figures such as Stephane Bonazza, who oversees , and Nora Sabeg, responsible for . This core group supports a flat organizational structure, where team members across levels actively participate in discussions to foster creativity and collective decision-making. The studio emphasizes hiring passionate individuals dedicated to crafting high-quality games, promoting an environment that values diverse perspectives and professional growth. Shiro Games' leadership philosophy prioritizes employee passion, sustainable work practices, and work-life balance, exemplified by a strict no-crunch policy that ensures manageable workloads and involvement in all aspects of game creation. This approach aligns with the studio's indie roots, maintaining independence even after external investments, as the co-founders continue to hold majority control. As of 2025, there have been no significant leadership changes, with Cannasse and Vidal remaining at the helm to guide ongoing projects.

Funding and investments

Shiro Games was initially bootstrapped through revenues generated from its early game releases, including in 2013 and Northgard in 2017, allowing the studio to operate independently without external funding prior to 2022. In October 2022, the studio secured a significant minority of €50 million from Cathay Capital , which valued Shiro Games at €150 million and supported expansion into new projects and publishing initiatives while preserving its independence. This funding facilitated key post-investment developments, such as increased hiring to grow the team beyond its 60 employees at the time, investments in technological infrastructure, and the strengthening of its publishing arm, Shiro Unlimited, launched in 2021; the founders retained majority ownership, ensuring continued operational control. As of November 2025, Shiro Games has not announced any additional public funding rounds, sustaining its growth through ongoing revenue from game sales, with titles like Northgard exceeding 4 million units sold and the studio's portfolio generating an estimated $90 million in lifetime revenue across platforms.
