Tour origins
Garth Brooks' decision to launch the World Tour with Trisha Yearwood in 2014 stemmed from his long-standing commitment to family life, which had prompted his retirement from major touring in the early 2000s. Following a decade of unprecedented commercial success, including sales of over 100 million albums, Brooks announced his retirement on October 26, 2000, to prioritize raising his three daughters—Taylor (born 1992), August (born 1994), and Allie (born 1996)—in Tulsa, Oklahoma, away from the demands of the music industry.[7][8] This choice was influenced by his divorce from first wife Sandy Mahl, finalized in 2001, after which he focused on co-parenting and providing his children with a stable, normal childhood, forgoing the extensive travel that had defined his career. [9] During his semi-retirement, Brooks maintained a low profile but gradually re-engaged with live performances through selective opportunities that accommodated his family schedule. In 2005, he married Trisha Yearwood, who became an integral part of his personal and professional life, and the couple settled in Nashville while keeping close ties to Oklahoma. [10] A pivotal step came in 2009 when casino magnate Steve Wynn offered Brooks a residency at the Encore Theatre in Las Vegas, allowing weekend-only shows that minimized time away from home; this engagement, which ran from late 2009 to November 2012, drew strong audiences and reignited fan enthusiasm without the full rigors of a national tour. [11][12] The tour's origins crystallized as Brooks' youngest daughter, Allie, graduated high school in May 2014 and headed to college that fall, signaling the end of his primary child-rearing phase and freeing him to pursue larger-scale endeavors. Brooks had previously indicated he would not resume extensive touring until this milestone, a promise rooted in his dedication to his daughters' formative years. [13] On December 9, 2013, during a surprise revelation on ABC's Good Morning America, Brooks confirmed the world tour's launch for 2014, co-headlining with Yearwood and framing it as a return to the road after 13 years, driven by renewed creative energy and fan demand. [14] This announcement aligned with plans for new music releases, positioning the tour as a celebration of his enduring legacy in country music. [15]Album conception
The conception of Triple Live emerged as a direct successor to Garth Brooks' landmark live album Double Live (1998), which documented his 1996–1998 World Tour and remains the best-selling live album in history with over 21 million copies sold. Following the success of that release, Brooks sought to chronicle his comeback with a more expansive recording from the 2014–2017 World Tour with Trisha Yearwood, a three-and-a-half-year trek that became one of the highest-grossing country tours ever, grossing over $100 million and drawing millions of fans across multiple continents. The tour's scale and energy, including sold-out stadium shows and intimate fan interactions, inspired the project as a way to preserve the raw, communal spirit of these performances for a new generation of listeners.[3] Announced on August 27, 2018, during a press conference announcing his upcoming show at Notre Dame Stadium, Triple Live was envisioned as a three-disc set featuring 30 tracks (expanded from an initial 26) to reflect the tour's breadth, stepping up from the double-disc format of its predecessor. Brooks emphasized creating a "fan mix" edition, allowing users to toggle between audience and stage perspectives for an immersive experience, stating, "THIS is INTENSE and STUPID FUN. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, it is JUST LIKE BEING AT A GARTH SHOW." This innovative approach stemmed from Brooks' commitment to fan accessibility, with a limited free digital download offered immediately via Ticketmaster to celebrate the partnership with Amazon Music.[16][15] The album's development was also influenced by the tour's extension into the 2019 Stadium Tour, named Pollstar's top country tour that year, incorporating fresh recordings to capture evolving setlists and audience responses. Brooks' decision to produce Triple Live underscored his philosophy of live music as the essence of his career, aiming to bridge his hiatus from major touring (1998–2014) with a definitive audio snapshot of his return to the stage.[17]Recording and production
Live capture
The live performances featured on Triple Live were captured during Garth Brooks' World Tour with Trisha Yearwood, a record-breaking run spanning 2014 to 2017 that encompassed nearly 400 arena and stadium shows across North America.[3] The tour's audio infrastructure, provided by Clair Brothers, supported high-fidelity multi-track recording at select venues, enabling post-production flexibility for the album.[18] On-site audio capture was managed by veteran front-of-house engineer Dan Heins, who had mixed Brooks' live shows since the early 1990s, and system engineer Rob Rankin, ensuring consistent sound quality and signal routing from the stage to recording systems.[18][19] Their setup included strategic microphone placement to isolate instruments, vocals, and audience reactions, facilitating the compilation of 26 tracks from multiple concerts for the initial digital release.[5] A key innovation in the live capture was the recording of dual audio perspectives—onstage band mix and crowd ambiance—which allowed for the album's "Fan Mix" edition. This stereo configuration enabled listeners to pan between viewpoints, simulating an immersive concert experience, as detailed by Brooks in promotional materials.[20] The raw multi-tracks were subsequently delivered to recording engineer and mixer Matthew "Buster" Allen at Allen Sound in Nashville for processing.[21] The Triple Live Deluxe edition, released in 2020, expanded the capture to include performances from Brooks' subsequent Stadium Tour (2019–2022), incorporating additional tracks for a total of 30 while retaining the core methodology of tour-integrated recording.[3] This approach prioritized authentic energy over studio overdubs, with minimal editing to preserve the spontaneity of each show's crowd interaction and band dynamics.[2]Mixing and editing
The recordings for Triple Live were mixed by Matthew "Buster" Allen, a Nashville-based engineer and owner of Allen Sound, who also served as the primary recording engineer for the project.[21] Allen's involvement extended to capturing multi-track audio from select dates on Brooks' 2014–2017 world tour with Trisha Yearwood, ensuring the final product maintained the immediacy of live performances.[18] For the 2020 Triple Live Deluxe edition, which expanded to 30 tracks across three discs, Allen again handled engineering and mixing duties, with mastering completed at Independent Mastering.[22] Additional engineering support came from John Zvolensky on the deluxe release.[23] This collaborative post-production approach allowed for the selection and refinement of performances from over 390 shows, compiling them into a cohesive set that highlighted Brooks' stage energy and band dynamics.[3]Release and editions
Announcement and digital debut
On August 27, 2018, Garth Brooks announced Triple Live, a three-disc live album captured during his world tour, during a press conference at the University of Notre Dame ahead of his upcoming performances there.[16] The project was described as a "fan-mix" edition, featuring specially adjusted audio mixes that allowed listeners to select perspectives such as crowd or stage views for an immersive experience.[16] Brooks emphasized the album's energetic vibe, calling it "INTENSE and STUPID FUN" in a statement released alongside the announcement.[16] The digital debut occurred immediately following the announcement, with a limited number of free downloads made available exclusively through Ticketmaster starting that evening.[2] Access codes were distributed during a live broadcast of "Inside Studio G" on Brooks' official Facebook page at 7:00 PM ET, redeemable only on desktop or laptop computers via the Ticketmaster website.[16] Each disc contained eight or nine tracks from various tour stops, showcasing high-energy performances of Brooks' hits.[24] This initial release was positioned as a special gift to fans, limited in quantity to heighten exclusivity before broader availability.[2]Physical formats
Triple Live was released in physical formats on November 20, 2020, following its initial digital debut in 2018. The primary physical edition is the Triple Live Deluxe three-disc compact disc set, comprising 30 live tracks recorded during the 2014–2017 Garth Brooks World Tour with Trisha Yearwood and the subsequent Stadium Tour. This version is housed in a slim jewel case and includes a booklet with photographs capturing moments from the tour.[3] Multiple limited-edition variants of the CD set were produced, each featuring unique cover art tied to specific tour locations or events to commemorate fan experiences. Examples include covers highlighting performances in Eugene, Oregon; Boise, Idaho; Regina, Canada; the Notre Dame concert; The Barn venue; and Knoxville, Tennessee, with catalog numbers such as 1916-C for Eugene and 1862-C for the limited Notre Dame edition.[5] An exclusive cover variant was available directly through GarthBrooks.com, emphasizing the album's connection to the stadium and world tours.[3] In addition to CDs, Triple Live was issued on triple-LP vinyl starting in 2019 under the Pearl Records label, with several cover variants released through 2020. Notable editions include the "Live At Yankee Stadium" (catalog 817-05), "Entertainer" (catalog 800-12 on pearl-colored vinyl), "Ryman" (catalog 800-12), and "7-Diamond" (catalog 824-12), all pressed in the United States and available worldwide in limited runs. Later 2020 vinyl pressings maintain the 30-track deluxe selection, while earlier 2019 editions feature a slightly shorter tracklist; these were designed for collectors, often bundled with tour memorabilia in select releases.[5][25]Promotion
Marketing campaigns
The marketing for Triple Live centered on innovative digital distribution strategies to engage fans directly, beginning with its announcement on August 27, 2018. Garth Brooks partnered with Ticketmaster to offer a limited number of free digital downloads of the 26-track Fan Mix edition exclusively through their platform, aiming to recreate the live tour experience for a broad audience.[16][15] The download code was revealed during Brooks' weekly Facebook Live show at 7 p.m. ET, encouraging real-time participation and social media buzz among fans.[26] This limited-time promotion, available only on the announcement night, successfully distributed thousands of copies while building anticipation for future physical releases.[27] Following the digital debut, the album's physical rollout faced delays due to planned promotional tie-ins that shifted timelines. Initially slated for a fall 2018 release, Triple Live was postponed to align with a major Amazon initiative, though the specific promotion did not materialize as expected, leading to a full launch in November 2020 as Triple Live Deluxe.[28] The 2020 campaign emphasized retail exclusives to drive in-store and online sales, with Walmart offering unique album covers featuring tour photography not available elsewhere.[29][30] Additionally, Brooks collaborated with Talk Shop Live for live-streamed shopping events, where fans could purchase the three-CD set with personalized covers during interactive sessions.[30] These efforts bundled Triple Live Deluxe with Brooks' studio album Fun, cross-promoting both to maximize visibility across physical and digital channels.[31]Tie-ins with tours
The release of Triple Live in 2018 directly commemorated Garth Brooks' 2014–2017 World Tour with Trisha Yearwood, a record-breaking run that spanned three and a half years and included nearly 400 arena shows across North America, grossing $364 million in ticket sales.[3][32] The album's 26 tracks, drawn from multitrack recordings captured at various tour stops, captured the energy of performances in venues like the Prudential Center in Newark and the TD Garden in Boston, positioning it as an official soundtrack to the tour's communal fan experiences.[2][16] Promotion of the album intertwined with Brooks' ongoing live commitments, including a free digital download offer facilitated through Ticketmaster on the announcement date of August 27, 2018, which tied into the platform's role as the primary ticket seller for his concerts.[2][33] This initiative, revealed during a Facebook Live session from Inside Studio G, encouraged fans to access the album immediately while building anticipation for future tour announcements, such as the 2019 Notre Dame Stadium concert.[16] The strategy leveraged the tour's legacy to drive streams and sales. The 2020 Deluxe Edition expanded these connections by incorporating additional tracks from Brooks' subsequent Stadium Tour, such as performances at Yankee Stadium and Notre Dame Stadium.[3] This edition, exclusive to garthbrooks.com with six variant covers, was marketed as a bridge between the world tour's scale and the Stadium Tour's performances, including fan-favorite medleys like "Two of a Kind, Workin' on a Full House."[17] Promotional materials, including a photo booklet of tour and Stadium Tour moments, reinforced the album's role in extending live show narratives to home listeners.[3] Subsequent tie-ins appeared in 2022 with the announcement of the Garth Brooks/Plus ONE residency at Caesars Palace, where pre-orders for the Garth Brooks LIVE LIVE box set bundled Triple Live alongside other live recordings, directly linking the album to new ticket sales for the 2023–2025 run of over 100 shows, which concluded in March 2025.[34][35] This packaging highlighted archival footage and audio from both the world tour and Vegas engagements, sustaining the album's relevance amid Brooks' return to consistent touring.[36]Reception
Critical reviews
Triple Live Deluxe garnered positive reception from country music outlets upon its 2020 physical release, building on the acclaim for the original 2018 digital version of Triple Live. Buddy Iahn of The Music Universe lauded the initial release for its immersive "submersible" quality, emphasizing how the three-disc set captures the electric atmosphere of Garth Brooks' 2014–2017 World Tour with Trisha Yearwood, spanning nearly 400 shows. He highlighted the blend of timeless hits like "The Thunder Rolls" and "Friends in Low Places" alongside newer material such as "Ask Me How I Know" and covers like Kelsea Ballerini's "Girl Goin' Nowhere," noting the adjustable sound mix that allows listeners to experience the concert from various perspectives, despite minor quibbles over fade-outs between tracks.[37] The expanded Deluxe edition, adding four bonus tracks and a photo booklet, was similarly appreciated for preserving the high-energy live essence amid the COVID-19 pandemic's concert hiatus, serving as a vital substitute for fans. A review on Country Swag described it as an "inspirational and heart-wrenching reminder of the power that music holds," underscoring its role in delivering Brooks' iconic performances when live events were unavailable.[38] Professional critiques remained somewhat sparse compared to Brooks' earlier works.Fan and commercial feedback
Fans appreciated Triple Live for its immersive capture of the energy from Garth Brooks' 2014–2017 World Tour with Trisha Yearwood and subsequent Stadium Tour, often highlighting the album's ability to recreate the live concert atmosphere through extended versions of hits like "Friends in Low Places" and crowd interactions. The innovative "Fan Mix" edition, which allowed listeners to customize audio perspectives between onstage and audience views, was particularly praised for enhancing personal engagement and nostalgia.[2] Customer ratings reflect strong fan approval, with the Deluxe CD edition earning a perfect 5.0 out of 5 stars from 16 reviews on Walmart, where buyers commended the 30-track, three-disc set for its comprehensive tour documentation and included photo booklet.[29] Similarly, the exclusive vinyl version received 4.4 out of 5 stars from 28 reviews on the same platform, with fans noting the high-quality pressing and faithful reproduction of the tour's excitement.[40] No significant negative feedback emerged in these reviews, underscoring broad satisfaction among longtime supporters. Commercially, the album's release strategy generated buzz through its initial digital availability and limited free downloads of the Fan Mix version, fostering immediate fan interaction and driving demand for physical editions like the Deluxe and Legacy Collection variants.[2] The multiple formats, including exclusive retailer versions, catered to collectors and contributed to sustained interest, aligning with Brooks' pattern of leveraging direct-to-fan sales for robust market response.[17]Commercial performance
Chart achievements
Upon its initial release as a digital download exclusive to Ticketmaster in August 2018, bundled with concert ticket purchases, Triple Live was ineligible for inclusion on major music charts under then-current Billboard SoundScan reporting rules, which required standard retail sales tracking. This limited its immediate chart visibility despite strong initial fan uptake during Brooks' world tour promotion.[15] The album's wider commercial availability came with the Triple Live Deluxe edition in November 2020, which expanded to physical and digital retail formats through partners like Amazon and Walmart. This version debuted at No. 113 on the Billboard 200 all-genre albums chart for the week ending December 5, 2020, marking Brooks' return to that ranking after a gap since his 2016 box set.[41] It also entered the Top Country Albums chart during the same tracking period, reflecting sustained interest in Brooks' live recordings amid his post-retirement touring resurgence. The Deluxe edition's chart performance underscored Brooks' enduring appeal in the country genre, though it fell short of the multiplatinum debuts typical of his 1990s peak, such as Double Live's No. 1 entry in 1998. By the end of 2021, Triple Live Deluxe had accumulated enough activity to rank No. 88 on Billboard's year-end Top Country Albums tally, highlighting its role in maintaining Brooks' catalog momentum.Certifications and sales
Triple Live has received notable certifications primarily in the United States, underscoring its strong commercial performance following its 2018 digital release and 2020 physical launch. Personnel
Touring musicians
The touring musicians for Garth Brooks' 2014–2017 World Tour, during which the Triple Live album was recorded, formed a tight-knit ensemble that provided the "Wall of Sound" backing for both Brooks and his duet partner Trisha Yearwood. Led by longtime collaborator Dave Gant on keyboards and fiddle, the band emphasized a full, energetic country sound across arenas and stadiums, contributing to the tour's record-breaking attendance of over 6.3 million fans.[50] Key instrumentalists included Jimmy Mattingly on fiddle, Mike Palmer on drums, Johnny Garcia on guitar, Bruce Bouton on steel guitar, Mike Greenwood on bass, and Steve Cox on keyboards, many of whom had prior experience with Brooks from his earlier tours and recordings. These musicians were instrumental in delivering the high-energy performances captured on Triple Live, blending traditional country instrumentation with dynamic live arrangements.[50] The backup vocal group, known as the "Wall of Sound," featured Vicki Hampton, Robert "Bob" Bailey (a veteran from Brooks' 1990s era), and Karyn Rochelle, who also served as an opener for select shows; their harmonies added depth to hits like "In Another's Eyes" and anthemic crowd favorites. This core touring lineup remained consistent throughout the tour's three-and-a-half-year run, enabling seamless transitions between Brooks' solo sets and joint appearances with Yearwood.[50]Production credits
Triple Live was produced by Garth Brooks, who oversaw the selection and compilation of performances from his 2014–2017 World Tour with Trisha Yearwood, as well as select dates from the subsequent Stadium Tour.[51] The recordings were engineered and mixed by Mark Miller, a long-time collaborator whose work at Allen Sound captured the high-energy atmosphere of the live shows across various venues, including Yankee Stadium and Notre Dame Stadium.[21][52] For the Triple Live Deluxe edition released in 2020, the production process remained consistent, expanding the tracklist to 30 songs while retaining Brooks' production vision and Miller's engineering expertise to highlight the tour's record-breaking scope.[17] Later inclusions in boxed sets like The Legacy Collection (2019) and Time Traveler (2023) featured remixed and remastered versions, with Miller again contributing to the audio refinement for enhanced clarity and fidelity.[53] This approach prioritized the unfiltered excitement of the concerts, avoiding extensive studio alterations to preserve the authentic crowd interaction and musical immediacy.[2] Key production personnel included:- Producer: Garth Brooks
- Recording and Mixing Engineer: Mark Miller
- Label: Pearl Records
