Nineteen full expansions for the MMORPG EverQuest II have been released, as well as three Adventure Packs.

With EverQuest II, Sony Online Entertainment introduced the concept of Adventure Packs. Adventure Packs are meant to be smaller "mini-expansions" to the game, adding a plot line with several zones, new creatures and items to the game via digital download with a smaller fee. As time went on, however, the development team has decided to release free zones and content instead of including them in Adventure Packs. Some recent releases include a new starting city, Neriak, with a new starting race, Arasai;[1] and new high level dungeons The Throne of New Tunaria[2] and the Estate of Unrest.[3]

Until 2011, expansions were available in both DVD and digital formats, but can now be downloaded through a digital service. The digital versions often come with a bonus features such as a creature that the player can put in their in-game house. Expansions generally introduce many new zones with many plot lines, new features, many new creatures and items, new cities, and often come with a boost in the level cap or a new player race. While it may be easier to download the expansions digitally, traditional retail offers more content.

Desert of Flames

[edit]

EverQuest II: Desert of Flames

Developer(s) Sony Online Entertainment
Publisher(s)
Release September 13, 2005

Desert of Flames is the first expansion for EverQuest II. It featured a new land mass to explore, PvP arenas, a level increase from 50 to 60, a new climb ability and new items and monsters. The major quest line for the expansion is commonly known as "The Peacock Line" - the series of 17 or so quests culminates with a raid requiring the player to group up with his guildmates to slay an entity known as "The Godking".

Players can choose from a selection of rewards to be used in the weapon slot depending on their class, for example a mage would receive an item named "Wand of Second life" which can also be changed at will into a two-handed weapon - "Staff of Second life". This quest takes place throughout the Desert of Ro from the sinking sands to the living tombs and eventually the Silent City.

New zones include the Sinking Sands, Pillars of Flame, Clefts of Rujark and the dervish city of Maj'Dul. Also many instances such as Poets Palace and Shimmering Citadel are available with Desert of Flames.

Desert of Flames holds a 79% rating on GameRankings.[4]

Kingdom of Sky

[edit]

EverQuest II: Kingdom of Sky

Developer(s) Sony Online Entertainment
Publisher(s)
Release February 21, 2006

Kingdom of Sky featured a new region to explore, located high above the skies of Norrath, known as the Overrealm. It included a new level cap of 70 for adventurers and artisans, new items and quests, new monsters to fight, alternate ways of advancing the player's character (achievement points) and the ability to increase a guild to level 50.

Purchase of the expansion granted each character in any account that bought the expansion an Aviak hatchling. If the expansion was bought in a brick and mortar store, the account was also granted one Carnivorous plant. The Carnivorous Plant acts as a house pet which can be fed items from the world, and depending on what is fed to it, will yield a useful item.

The Overrealm is composed of floating islands which originate from the Plane of Sky. Transportation to the Overrealm works like in The Shadows of Luclin; when a player wishes to go there, he or she obtains a teleportation shard from the overseer of a wizard spire on the ground. The overseer NPC then grants to the player character a teleportation shard which flags the player as one wanting to go to the Overrealm. Every five minutes, the spires activate, sending player characters to the Overrealm. If a player originates in Antonica or the Commonlands, he or she will be sent to the Tenebrous Tangle. If a player originates in the Thundering Steppes or Nektulos Forest, then he or she is sent to the Barren Sky. If the player originates in the Enchanted Lands or the Feerrott, he or she is sent to the Bonemire.

As with both the original game and the first expansion, a new epic quest line is included called the "Claymore" line. The start of this quest line can be completed solo in the outdoor areas, but it will soon require a group and many segments require large investments of time "camping" where the NPCs will spawn and gain quest updates. The last parts of this quest must be completed within a raid (a group of 7+ players), the first being in an area known as "Ascent of the Awakened" in which the players must have two groups (12 players). The final part takes place in Deathtoll, a zone intended for four groups (24 players), and requires an epic access quest in itself to enter. In the end players choose from an archetype specific reward (in some cases there are multiple choices).

Once a player has installed this expansion pack and reaches adventuring level 10, a character is granted achievement experience through discovering new areas, finding precious treasure and status items, killing monsters with specific names, completing select quests, and completing certain collections of items.

Kingdom of Sky holds a 78% rating on GameRankings.[5]

Publisher(s) Daybreak Game Company
Release November 13, 2018

Chaos Descending is the fifteenth expansion pack to EverQuest II and was released on November 13, 2018.[22] Like the Planes of Prophecy, the story sees the player being tasked to restore order to the Elemental Planes which first appeared in the original EverQuest's The Planes of Power expansion. The content is focused primarily on four new outdoor zones: The Planes of Fire (Doomfire, the Burning Lands), Earth (Vegarlson, the Earthen Badlands), Air (Eryslai, the Kingdom of Wind), and Disease (Detroxxulous, the Plaguelands), as well as dungeon content based in the Plane of Water (Awuidor, the Unresting Waters) and a questing hub in the Plane of Knowledge (Myrist, The Great Library).[23] New features for the game include new quests for adventurers and crafters, new solo, heroic, and raid zones, and the ability to equip mounts and mercenaries with gear to gain added bonuses.[24]

Two months leading to the release of the expansion, Daybreak Games launched an "Against the Elements" event in EverQuest II where players could take on quests revolving around rampaging elemental creatures.[25] In their review of the expansion, MMORPG.com gave the game a 7.5 out of 10 rating. Writer Paul Eno commented that while it had a good amount of new content and a "fun and adventurous" story, he found that the new additions to the Ascension class system introduced in Kunark Ascending only added to the already high number of abilities characters had accumulated over the past several years and may put off new players. Combat was also seen as slow and "borders on monotony", which would be best experienced with a group rather than playing solo.[26]

EverQuest II expansions are a series of major packs for the (MMORPG) EverQuest II, developed and published by (formerly Sony Online Entertainment). Released regularly since the debut expansion Desert of Flames in September 2005, these expansions extend the game's fantasy world of Norrath by introducing new zones, quests, dungeons, races, classes, and signature abilities, while typically raising the player level cap and advancing the overarching storyline involving ancient evils, gods, and epic conflicts. As of November 2025, has 21 full expansions, in addition to four adventure packs that provided smaller content updates, three of which were released between 2005 and 2006 with the fourth in 2015; all prior expansions and adventure packs are bundled with the purchase of the latest expansion or accessible via a Daybreak All Access subscription. Notable early expansions like Kingdom of Sky (2006) and Echoes of Faydwer (2006) are often praised for their innovative aerial zones and return to classic locales, respectively, helping to revitalize the game's community during its formative years. Later expansions have shifted toward themes of cosmic horror, planar realms, and dragon lore, with recent entries such as Scars of Destruction (November 2024) focusing on destructive forces reshaping Norrath and the upcoming 22nd expansion, Rage of Cthurath (scheduled for December 2025), promising new zones like the Oogothl Sprawl, a level cap increase to 135, and features including guild coalitions and illusion mechanics. These updates have sustained 's longevity over two decades, supporting free-to-play progression while emphasizing group raids, heroic adventures, and player housing enhancements across diverse playstyles from solo exploration to large-scale PvE content.

Overview

History and development

EverQuest II: The Shattered Lands was released on November 8, 2004, by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), marking the launch of the as a sequel to the original . Developed initially to expand on the fantasy world of Norrath with improved graphics and instanced dungeons, the base game established a subscription-based model that supported ongoing content updates. Following the base game's release, shifted to an annual expansion cycle beginning in 2005 with Desert of Flames, a pattern that has continued consistently, resulting in 21 expansions as of November 2025, with the 22nd scheduled for December. This cadence allowed developers to introduce new zones, classes, and mechanics yearly, sustaining player engagement amid competition from other MMORPGs. In 2011, the Destiny of Velious expansion introduced flying mounts, enabling aerial travel in specific zones and enhancing exploration dynamics. Later that year, implemented an updated progression system, which formalized guild leveling through status accumulation and writ completions, providing structured benefits like shared storage and bonuses. A pivotal transition occurred in 2011 when fully converted to a model on December 6, broadening accessibility by allowing non-subscribers to play core content while offering premium expansions and conveniences via microtransactions. This shift, combined with the 2015 rebranding of SOE to following its acquisition by Columbus Nova, refocused development on long-term and community-driven updates without major disruptions to the expansion pipeline. In 2015, Terrors of Thalumbra pioneered level-agnostic content, scaling encounters to allow players of varying levels to group together effectively, which democratized high-end activities and influenced subsequent designs. Looking ahead, Daybreak's 2025 roadmap emphasizes continued annual releases, with the 22nd expansion, Rage of Cthurath, slated for December and featuring open beta testing in the preceding months to incorporate player feedback on new raids and zones. This process reflects ongoing trends toward iterative development, including server merges and event integrations, to maintain the game's vitality into its third decade.

Access and free-to-play model

EverQuest II transitioned to a model on December 6, 2011, coinciding with the release of the Age of Discovery expansion, which made the base game and all prior expansions accessible without a required subscription. This shift allowed new and returning players to experience the core content, including zones, quests, and character progression up to level 90 initially, while introducing optional paid tiers for enhanced features. Over the years, has periodically expanded free access, removing many early restrictions on classes, races, and inventory to improve for non-subscribers. As of 2025, players have full access to the base game and expansions up to Planes of (released in 2017), enabling progression to level 110 and exploration of associated content such as new zones and storylines. However, expansions released after Planes of , including Chaos Descending (2018) and subsequent titles, require separate purchase or inclusion via subscription bundles to unlock higher level caps, advanced zones, and additional gameplay elements. This tiered structure ensures that while the majority of the game's history—spanning over a decade of content—is available at no cost, ongoing expansions drive monetization through direct sales. Under the current access policy, purchasing the latest expansion, such as Scars of Destruction (2024) or the forthcoming Rage of Cthurath (late 2025), automatically includes all previous expansions, providing a comprehensive package for new buyers without needing to acquire older content individually. The Daybreak All Access subscription, priced from $9.99 monthly, further enhances access by granting 500 Daybreak Cash (the in-game currency formerly known as Station Cash) each month, a 10% discount on items, and priority benefits across Daybreak titles, including expedited expansion unlocks. This subscription model serves as an alternative to outright purchases for players seeking ongoing content without fragmented buying. Despite the expansive free content, certain features tied to post-Planes of Prophecy expansions remain restricted for free players, such as exclusive races (e.g., the Vah Shir introduced in Night of Shadows) and specialized mounts available only through paid content. These limitations encourage upgrading to access the full breadth of customization and utility options, maintaining a balance between free entry and premium progression. Free players can still participate in core group and solo activities within their content tier, but heroic and raid encounters from later expansions are inaccessible without purchase.

Expansion packs

Desert of Flames

Desert of Flames, released on September 13, 2005, marked the first expansion for , expanding the game's world into the arid Desert of Ro continent. This update introduced a rich Arabian Nights-inspired setting, complete with new quests, creatures, and challenges designed for higher-level players. The storyline centered on ancient conflicts between efreeti and djinni, powerful elemental beings vying for dominance amid the shifting sands, drawing adventurers into a tale of intrigue involving genie lords and desert spirits. Players explored this lore through quests that uncovered hidden relics and mediated supernatural rivalries in the harsh environment. A key feature was the increase in the level cap from the base game's 50 to 60, allowing characters to gain additional abilities and tackle more demanding encounters. New zones included the expansive Sinking Sands, the fiery Burning Woods, and the bustling city of Maj'Dul, serving as a central hub for trade, faction alliances, and social interactions. These areas emphasized verticality and exploration, with the introduction of a climbing ability enabling players to scale sheer cliffs and walls marked by distinctive scratches, opening up previously inaccessible paths and secrets. This mechanic enhanced navigation in the rugged terrain, promoting a more immersive sense of discovery. The expansion also pioneered player-versus-player (PvP) elements in through dedicated arenas in Maj'Dul and the launch of PvP-focused servers, where combatants could duel without traditional penalties like experience loss. Arenas supported both and group battles, with options to transform into mythical creatures for added flair, fostering competitive play separate from the core PvE progression. Reception was generally positive, with critics praising the atmospheric zones and innovative features; awarded it 8.2 out of 10 for its substantial content additions, while gave it 7 out of 10, noting the PvP as a fun diversion despite integration challenges.

Kingdom of Sky

EverQuest II: Kingdom of Sky, released on February 21, 2006, marked the second expansion for the game, building on the level cap established in the previous Desert of Flames by raising it to 70 for both adventurers and artisans, while also introducing a new level cap of 50. This expansion shifted the focus to vertical in the Overrealm, a realm of floating islands high above Norrath, where players uncover ancient ruins and confront threats from long-forgotten enemies plotting to unleash chaos on the world below. The storyline emphasizes discovery and peril amid these aerial domains, with players navigating treacherous skies filled with mythical creatures and hidden lore tied to the Prismatic Dragon's legacy. The expansion introduced ten new adventure zones, including the lush, dragon-infested Tenebrous Tangle; the arid, wind-swept Barren Sky; and the ominous Bonemire, each comprising multiple floating islands connected by precarious bridges and portals accessible via Ulteran Spires scattered across Norrath. These areas support a range of content from solo quests to group raids, featuring 25 new monster types and an array of treasures, encouraging players to delve into temples of splendor and wilds for epic encounters. A key innovation was the achievement points system, unlocked starting at level 20, where players earn points through exploration, quest completion, and treasure discovery—up to a maximum of 50 points—to invest in a talent tree unlocking specialized class abilities and skills, with the option to reset progress for a fee. Complementing this, heritage quests emerged as a new high-level questline demanding advanced combat or crafting prowess, often involving battles against formidable bosses to preserve Norrathian legacies. Technically, Kingdom of Sky enhanced the game's visuals with surreal, distinct environments in the Overrealm zones, showcasing improved graphical fidelity through detailed ruins, alien landscapes, and dynamic atmospheric effects that heightened the sense of elevation and isolation. It also implemented instance scaling to better accommodate varying group sizes and player levels within the new dungeons, allowing for more flexible solo, group, and raid experiences without fixed difficulty barriers, alongside the addition of a player-versus-player combat system available through a concurrent free update. These updates collectively expanded progression options beyond traditional leveling, fostering deeper character customization and aerial-themed adventures distinct from the ground-bound deserts of prior content.

Echoes of Faydwer

Echoes of Faydwer, the third expansion pack for , was released on November 13, 2006, in . This expansion marked the return to the continent of Faydwer, a lush and magical realm isolated since the cataclysms that shattered Norrath, allowing players to explore its forests, mountains, and subterranean depths for the first time in the era. Unlike previous expansions that raised the level cap, Echoes of Faydwer maintained the maximum player level at 70, focusing instead on broadening content accessibility for all experience levels with over 350 new quests and more than 20 adventure zones. The storyline centers on investigations into mysterious events in Nektulos Forest, where players uncover ancient bloodlines and secrets of the undead, including encounters with , hellhounds, fleshgoyles, and revenants. Players must choose allegiance between the Brethren of Night, a vampiric faction, or the Hand of Marr, a holy order, which influences quest progression and rewards, such as vampiric spells, Neriak-inspired items, and alignment-specific gear. This bloodline mechanic added replayability, with destructible environmental elements like walls enhancing exploration in instanced areas tailored for solo, group, or raid play. The pack expanded the world with five new zones, including vampire lairs designed with cultural influences in loot and aesthetics, such as the Tombs of Night—open to all players regardless of purchase—the Crypt of T'Haen for group challenges, and the D'Morte Burial Chambers as a pre-order exclusive. These areas featured dense heroic encounters and new weapons, armor, combat arts, and tradeskill recipes, prioritizing thematic immersion over expansive overland travel. As a smaller-scale release compared to full expansions, it delivered targeted content to bridge early-game gaps without overhauling core systems.

The Splitpaw Saga

The Splitpaw Saga is the second adventure pack released for EverQuest II, introducing mid-level content centered on the ancient lair of the cannibalistic Splitpaw gnoll clan. Launched on June 28, 2005, it expands the game's world with instanced zones in the collapsed caverns of Sundered Splitpaw, where players uncover the clan's mysterious downfall through environmental puzzles involving movable planks, crates, and barrels. The pack targets characters levels 20 to 50, with encounters dynamically scaling to the average group level for balanced progression suitable for solo, group, and raid play. At its core, the storyline revolves around the Splitpaw gnolls, the first clan created by Brell Serilis, whose rigid caste system and territorial dominance in their lair form the basis of the narrative. Players access the content via terraporters in the Thundering Steppes after prerequisite quests, delving into 12 event-based instances that emphasize gnoll foes, explosive devices, and puzzle-solving to reveal secrets tied to a mysterious azure shard. These instances provide repeatable challenges, fostering group coordination against the clan's hierarchical packs of warriors, shamans, and leaders. The pack introduces new rewards tailored for group play, including unique items looted from zones and purchasable from other adventurers, enhancing mid-level gearing without requiring full expansion access. As bridge content between the base game and larger expansions, it delivers story-rich adventures and mechanical innovations to maintain player engagement during live updates. This follows the vampire-themed instances of The Bloodline Chronicles, shifting focus to beastly tribal threats in Norrath's underbelly.

The Fallen Dynasty

The Fallen Dynasty, the third adventure pack for , was released on June 14, 2006, introducing content targeted at characters levels 55 to 70. It features seven outdoor areas with a distinctive Asian-inspired aesthetic, including the Village of Shin as a starting hub, the corrupted Mystic Lake filled with pirates and forest creatures, the haunted Forsaken City, and Nizara, City of the Nayad, among others. These zones draw on Wantia cultural elements, evoking feudal Japanese influences through monk clans, ancient temples, and mythical creatures like snake-human hybrids and water golems, while incorporating trade expedition themes tied to Qeynos-based organizations such as the Far Seas Supply Division. The pack's storyline centers on players arriving at the Isle of Mara to establish trade with the isolated Wantia people and assist the Whistling Fists Clan in purifying corrupted lands, particularly the Mystic Lake and the ruins of the . This narrative bridges broader Norrath lore by involving a fallen half-god, half-man figure from I who has lost his memory, requiring players to help recover it through quests that culminate in challenging raid encounters. The plot explores themes of a collapsed ancient dynasty, with ghostly remnants and corrupted spirits haunting the , tying into the ' trials in the Tower of the Four Winds. Brief connections exist to prior content like Splitpaw Saga instances, where gnoll threats indirectly influence regional instability. A key focus for artisans is a series of class-specific crafting quests available to level 50+ crafters, requiring Tier 6 harvesting skills (up to 240 in relevant areas like or gathering) and no involvement. These quests, initiated through contacts in the Village of Shin (such as the Nurwin craftsmen or Augren scholars), involve gathering materials and crafting items in instances or across Antonica. All classes receive a 36-slot artisan's for raw harvestables and a tradeskill charm granting +10 to primary and 1% reduced ; additional rewards include advanced books and tool upgrades from Rai Faela Nurwin. Examples include the Alchemist's "Sparks Aflame" quest for explosive components and the Provisioner's "Providing for an Exotic Feast" for rare ingredients, emphasizing practical support for the Wantia trade efforts.

Rum Cellar

The Rum Cellar Campaign, released on April 28, 2015, marked the final adventure pack for , serving as a transitional DLC between the era of smaller content packs and the return to full-scale expansions. This pack introduced high-level content centered on a pirate-infused distillery environment in the Phantom Sea zone, accessible via docks near Castle Highhold. Priced at $14.99 standalone or bundled with prior expansions, it emphasized solo and group challenges for endgame players, including new loot, , and a unique merchant vendor. Designed for characters at level 100 and above, the pack requires ownership of the Altar of Malice expansion to access its instanced zones, ensuring players had reached the current level cap before engaging. It features six pirate-themed instances: two solo zones (one standard solo and one advanced solo), three heroic zones (one standard heroic, one event heroic, and one event heroic-challenge), and a raid zone with ten bosses. Representative examples include F.S. Distillery: The Rum Cellar, a solo instance involving stealthy infiltration amid rum vats and barrels, and heroic areas evoking shipwrecked pirate hideouts with Brokenskull pirate encounters. These zones incorporate nautical and elements, such as travel to rocky outposts and battles against rum-obsessed foes, enhancing the thematic immersion without altering core gameplay mechanics. The storyline revolves around the Rum Cellar Campaign, where players ally with a Brokenskull shaman named to thwart the "Rumpocalypse"—a chaotic rum-fueled uprising led by the distillery's overseer, Portia Rumuffin. Beginning with recruitment on Brokenskull Rock in the Moors of Ykesha, the narrative escalates to sabotaging fermentation operations and confronting smuggler-like pirate operations within the Far Seas Distillery, blending humor with high-stakes espionage to prevent a Norrath-wide rum shortage crisis. Quests like "Averting the Rumpocalypse" highlight comedic elements, such as dodging sleeping guards and exploding barrels, while tying into broader Phantom Sea lore. As the concluding adventure pack, Rum Cellar bridged to subsequent full expansions like Terrors of Thalumbra by providing polished, level 100+ content that tested solo and group dynamics in a compact format, paving the way for larger world-building narratives in later releases.
