Founding and Early Development
The Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTECH) was established in 1977 as a tertiary institution dedicated to science and technology education, formalized through the promulgation of Lagos State Edict No. 1 of 1978 with retroactive effect from June 1, 1977.[1] This edict marked the official creation of the college under the Lagos State Government, aiming to address the growing need for skilled manpower in technical and applied fields within the region.[2] Academic operations commenced in January 1978 at a temporary campus in Isolo, Lagos, beginning with an inaugural intake of 287 students enrolled across five foundational departments: Accountancy, Business Administration, Banking and Finance, Marketing, and Insurance.[7] These departments formed the core of the institution's early curriculum, emphasizing practical training in management and business-related disciplines to support economic development in Lagos State.[8] The initial setup at Isolo served as a provisional base while plans for a more permanent facility were underway, reflecting the institution's rapid mobilization to deliver higher education in response to state priorities. A significant early development occurred on August 1, 1978, when LACOSTECH merged with the Lagos State School of Agriculture located in Ikorodu, integrating agricultural education and resources into the college's framework.[1] This merger not only expanded the institution's academic scope to include agricultural sciences but also provided the nucleus for its permanent campus in Ikorodu, facilitating a transition from the temporary Isolo site to a more expansive and dedicated location.[7] The integration strengthened the college's focus on science and technology by incorporating practical agricultural programs, setting the stage for future growth. In 1986, the institution was renamed Lagos State Polytechnic to reflect its evolving mandate.[9]Evolution as a Polytechnic
In 1986, the Lagos State Government renamed the institution from Lagos State College of Science and Technology (LACOSTECH) to Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH) to align it with national standards for polytechnics, emphasizing technical and vocational education.[9] This change marked a shift toward broader offerings in applied sciences and technology, building on the merger with the Lagos State School of Agriculture in Ikorodu the previous decade. During the 1990s and 2000s, LASPOTECH expanded its academic structure by establishing key schools, including the School of Technology and the School of Environmental Studies, to address growing demands for specialized technical training.[2] These additions facilitated diversification into fields like engineering, architecture, and environmental management, contributing to a steady increase in enrollment; by the 2010s, the student population had surpassed 6,000, reflecting the institution's rising prominence in vocational education. The growth was supported by responses to national education policies, such as those from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), which standardized polytechnic curricula to promote industry-relevant skills. LASPOTECH introduced National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) programs as core offerings, focusing on practical, vocational, and technical education to equip students for Nigeria's industrial workforce. These two-year programs emphasized hands-on training in areas like accountancy, engineering technology, and business administration, aligning with federal directives to enhance technical manpower development. Infrastructure developments further bolstered operations, including the construction of the LASPOTECH Library Complex to support academic resources and the ICT Complex to integrate digital tools into learning.[10] The library, enhanced under dedicated leadership, became a central hub for research materials, while the ICT facilities, initiated in the early 2010s, promoted computer literacy and compliance with evolving national ICT policies in education.[11] These initiatives helped LASPOTECH navigate challenges like funding constraints and policy shifts, maintaining its role in technical education until 2021.Upgrade to University Status
In February 2022, the Lagos State Government announced the upgrade of Lagos State Polytechnic to a full university through an executive bill signed into law by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, renaming it the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).[1][12] The National Universities Commission (NUC) subsequently approved the conversion, with its Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Adamu Rasheed, presenting the certificate of recognition, enabling the institution to award bachelor's degrees and higher.[1][13] The transition posed significant administrative challenges, particularly in reclassifying over 1,200 academic staff to align with university standards and converting existing Higher National Diploma (HND) programs to bachelor's degree offerings.[1][2] This shift required faculty upgrades, curriculum revisions across departments, and infrastructure adjustments to support research-intensive university operations, ensuring compliance with NUC guidelines for degree-awarding status.[14] As part of the rebranding, LASUSTECH adopted the motto "Advancing knowledge through innovation and excellence in science and technology education," reflecting its new focus on technological advancement and research.[15] Early post-upgrade milestones included the NUC's approval of 38 undergraduate and postgraduate programs across five colleges, facilitating a pivot in enrollment from polytechnic-style ND/HND admissions to UTME-based bachelor's degree intake starting in the 2022/2023 academic session.[1] This enabled the university to admit its first cohort of degree-seeking students, with pioneer undergraduates projected to graduate by 2026, marking the inaugural university convocation.[16]Administration and Governance
