Date, venue, and host
The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on January 19, 2020, recognizing outstanding performances in film and television from the previous year.[1] The ceremony was held at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles, California, a venue renowned for its Moorish Revival architecture and status as the largest theater in the United States when built in 1926.[1] With a seating capacity of 6,300, the Shrine has served as the traditional home for the SAG Awards since 1997, hosting the event annually until 2020.[6][7] Unlike the 2018 and 2019 ceremonies, which featured hosts Kristen Bell and Megan Mullally respectively, the 2020 SAG Awards proceeded without a host, returning to the unhosted format that characterized most prior editions.[3] Pre-ceremony activities included red carpet arrivals beginning in the early afternoon, with official media coverage and the Champagne Taittinger toast starting around 2:45 p.m. PT.[8]Broadcast and production
The 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards were simulcast live on TNT and TBS on January 19, 2020, beginning at 8:00 p.m. ET / 5:00 p.m. PT from the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.[9][10] The ceremony was directed by Alan Carter and produced by Avalon Harbor Entertainment, Inc., with SAG-AFTRA serving as the presenting organization in association with Screen Actors Guild Awards, LLC; Kathy Connell acted as executive producer.[11][9][12] The live telecast maintained a traditional format honoring outstanding performances in film and television, running for approximately two hours.[10] Internationally, the event was made available in select countries through local broadcasters and Turner-affiliated networks.[13]Nominations
Announcement and eligibility
The nominations for the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced on December 11, 2019, by actors America Ferrera and Danai Gurira during a live stream from SAG-AFTRA headquarters in Los Angeles.[14] Eligibility for nominations covered outstanding performances by actors in motion pictures first publicly exhibited in a commercial theater for at least seven consecutive days in major markets, as well as in primetime television programs first broadcast or streamed, during the calendar year from January 1 to December 31, 2019; all productions were required to be signatory to SAG-AFTRA contracts.[15][16] The awards were determined through a two-stage voting process open to all SAG-AFTRA members in good standing, a group exceeding 160,000 performers and media professionals as of late 2019. First, separate nominating committees for film and television—each comprising around 2,100 randomly selected members—reviewed eligible submissions and voted to select up to five nominees per category.[17] These committees operated independently to ensure peer recognition across the 15 total categories, which included individual acting awards, ensemble performances, and stunt ensembles, with five nominees in each except where ensemble recognition highlighted collective casts. Following the announcement, final ballots were distributed to the full membership, who voted to select the winners by January 2020.[17][18]Film nominations

Winners
Film winners
The film awards at the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards, held on January 19, 2020, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, recognized outstanding performances in motion pictures from the previous year. These categories honored individual actors, ensembles, and stunt ensembles, with winners selected by SAG-AFTRA members from among the nominees announced earlier that month. The ceremony presented the film awards in a sequential order during the live broadcast, beginning with the ensemble cast prize and proceeding to individual categories, interspersed with television honors.[1] The Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture went to the ensemble of Parasite, directed by Bong Joon-ho, marking the first time a foreign-language film achieved this honor in SAG Awards history.[24] The South Korean cast, including Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong, Choi Woo-shik, Park So-dam, Jang Hye-jin, Lee Jung-eun, and Park Myung-hoon, accepted the award onstage to a standing ovation from the audience, highlighting the film's breakthrough impact on American awards recognition for international cinema.[25] Bong Joon-ho, present in the audience, captured the moment on his phone, and cast member Song Kang-ho expressed gratitude in English, emphasizing the collaborative spirit of the production.[25] In the leading actor categories, Joaquin Phoenix won for his portrayal of the titular character in Joker, directed by Todd Phillips. During his acceptance speech, Phoenix dedicated the award to the late Heath Ledger, who previously played the Joker in The Dark Knight, noting the profound influence of Ledger's performance and reflecting on his own fortune as an actor.[26] He also acknowledged the empathy required in acting, stating, "I think we all share this love of film and this form of expression," underscoring the profession's role in fostering human connection.[27] Renée Zellweger received the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her embodiment of Judy Garland in Judy, directed by Rupert Goold. In her speech, Zellweger conveyed deep emotion, thanking the cast and crew while honoring Garland's enduring legacy as a multifaceted artist, saying the role allowed her to explore "the incomparable life" of the icon.[28] For supporting roles, Brad Pitt earned the Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role for his role as Cliff Booth in Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Pitt infused his acceptance with humor, joking about adding the win to his "Tinder profile" amid his recent divorce and praising Tarantino's direction as a "masterclass in filmmaking."[29] He also lauded co-stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Margot Robbie, calling the experience "a really special run."[30] Laura Dern won Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her role as Nora Fanshaw in Noah Baumbach's Marriage Story. Dern's speech focused on the collaborative nature of the film, expressing appreciation for Baumbach's script and co-star Adam Driver, while highlighting the project's exploration of familial complexities.[28] Avengers: Endgame was awarded Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture, recognizing the film's innovative action sequences.[18] The Parasite ensemble victory served as a significant predictor for the film's success at the 92nd Academy Awards, where it swept major categories, including Best Picture—the first for a non-English-language film—further elevating global awareness of South Korean cinema and diverse storytelling in Hollywood.[31]| Category | Winner | Film |

Special honors
Life Achievement Award
The Screen Actors Guild Life Achievement Award, the guild's highest honor, was presented to Robert De Niro at the 26th annual ceremony on January 19, 2020.[38] De Niro, an Academy Award-winning actor known for his transformative performances, was selected as the 56th recipient of the award, with the announcement made on November 12, 2019.[39] The award recognizes a recipient's lifetime of exceptional achievement, leadership, and humanitarian contributions to the acting profession, as determined by a 24-member SAG-AFTRA Nominating Committee comprising performers and industry experts.[40] De Niro was honored for his profound influence on cinema through roles that exemplified dedication to the craft, including his iconic portrayals in Taxi Driver (1976), Raging Bull (1980)—for which he won an Oscar—and The Irishman (2019).[39] During the ceremony, Leonardo DiCaprio, De Niro's longtime collaborator from films like This Boy's Life (1993) and The Aviator (2004), presented the award, accompanied by a tribute video highlighting De Niro's career milestones and a live speech praising his mentorship and intensity as an actor.[41] In his acceptance speech, De Niro reflected on the essence of acting as a collaborative and demanding art form, thanking his fellow performers as "comrades in arms" and expressing gratitude for the recognition from his peers.[42] Established by the Screen Actors Guild in 1962, the Life Achievement Award—first given to Eddie Cantor—evolved from an independent honor into an integral part of the annual SAG Awards ceremony starting in 1995, continuing under SAG-AFTRA following the 2012 merger to celebrate enduring legacies in the field.[43]In Memoriam
The In Memoriam segment of the 26th Screen Actors Guild Awards, held on January 19, 2020, paid tribute to SAG-AFTRA members who died in 2019 through a video montage of career highlights, introduced onstage by actor Sterling K. Brown with a brief, heartfelt reflection on their enduring legacies.[44][45] The montage, set to somber instrumental music, unfolded mid-ceremony after the presentation of several television awards, creating an emotional interlude that paused the celebratory atmosphere to evoke remembrance and gratitude.[44] This annual tribute highlights SAG-AFTRA's tradition of commemorating deceased members for their artistic achievements and advocacy in advancing performers' rights and working conditions within the industry. The segment underscored the guild's role in fostering a sense of community among actors, emphasizing how their collective labor has shaped labor standards and creative storytelling in film and television.
