British Video of the Year controversy
[edit]This section's tone or style may not reflect the encyclopedic tone used on Wikipedia. (February 2020) |
The 2018 ceremony garnered controversy when Harry Styles was announced as the winner of the British Video of the Year. The official Brits leaderboard for these votes showed Little Mix consistently maintaining the number one spot each week, followed by Styles at number two. During the final voting event on the night of the ceremony Little Mix and Styles alternated between the top spot on numerous occasions. The last leader-board update placed Little Mix at the top spot, with Styles at number two. After the announcement of Styles as a winner, the Brit Awards were accused by Little Mix fans of rigging the votes for this category.[10][11] The Brits responded to the claim, saying: "The final leader-board was displayed on The BRITs website prior to the final count being checked and verified independently by the Electoral Reform Services, the company that independently run all BRITs voting processes. The leader-board doesn’t work in real time and the vote was incredibly tight at the top. Fans can have complete confidence in the BRITs public vote." The Electoral Reform Services added: "Robust vote-counting rules and filters are in place which are in accordance with ITV's voting regulations, and agreed and tested prior to any vote taking place. We are confident that the vote integrity has not been compromised."[12][13]

Nominations Announcement
The nominations for the 2018 Brit Awards were announced on 13 January 2018 during a live broadcast titled The BRITs Are Coming, hosted by Emma Willis on BBC Two at 5:45 p.m. GMT, with simultaneous reveals on the official Brits website and social media channels.[6][7] The event highlighted the diversity of British and international talent, setting the stage for the ceremony scheduled at The O2 Arena in London on 21 February 2018.[8] Nominations were distributed across 11 main categories, including British Album, British Single, British Male and Female Solo Artist, British Group, British Breakthrough Act, International Male and Female Solo Artist, International Group, British Video, and Critics' Choice, with an additional British Producer award. The selection process for most categories was handled by the BRITs Voting Academy, a panel of over 1,000 music industry professionals comprising members from the British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors (BASCA), and record labels. For British Single and British Video, a longlist of 10 entries was initially determined using sales, streaming, and YouTube/Vevo view data, after which public online voting narrowed it down to the final five nominees per category.[8][9][10] Dua Lipa emerged as the leading nominee with five nods, marking her as the first female artist to achieve this in a single year at the Brit Awards; her nominations spanned British Female Solo Artist, British Breakthrough Act, British Album for her self-titled debut, British Single for "New Rules," and British Video for "New Rules."[11][8] Other prominent British acts included Stormzy with three nominations in British Male Solo Artist, British Single for "Big For Your Boots," and British Album for Gang Signs & Prayer; Ed Sheeran with four in British Male Solo Artist, British Single for "Shape of You," British Album for ÷ (Divide), and British Video for "Shape of You"; Little Mix with two in British Group and British Single for "Touch"; and Harry Styles with one in British Video for "Sign of the Times."[7][8][12] International categories featured artists such as Kendrick Lamar (Male Solo Artist), Sigrid (Breakthrough Act), and Foo Fighters (Group), reflecting global influences in the nomination slate.[7]Statuette and Ceremony Design
The statuette for the 2018 Brit Awards was designed by British sculptor Sir Anish Kapoor, marking the first time a sculptor had been commissioned for the honor.[13] The award features the traditional Britannia figure encased within a transparent red resin block, creating a sculptural interplay of positive and negative forms that challenges viewers' perspectives and reveals new details from different angles.[14] Kapoor described the design as embodying this dual process inherent to sculpture, while Brit Awards chairman Jason Iley noted its ability to "discover more" upon rotation.[14] This iteration followed designs by artists such as Zaha Hadid in 2017, continuing the tradition of collaborating with prominent British creatives.[13] The ceremony's stage design, crafted by production designer Misty Buckley, adopted an origami-inspired aesthetic to evoke innovation in British music, featuring a 15-meter-tall, 59-meter-wide backdrop of folded, prism-shaped formations named elements like Iceberg, Moving Mountain, and Shard.[15] Constructed from a steel frame clad in aluminum composite board and wrapped in 3M™ DI-NOC™ architectural finishes—including metallic, wood, and mirror patterns—the set was projection-mapped using 23 laser projectors for dynamic visual effects, complemented by a 25-meter-tall LED screen backdrop and integrated LED lighting for performer setups.[15][16] These elements highlighted the event's focus on contemporary British artistry, with interactive projections syncing to performances.[17] Logistical preparations included last-minute adjustments when Ariana Grande withdrew from a planned tribute performance due to illness, amid her ongoing recovery from the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing.[18] Liam Gallagher stepped in as a replacement, delivering an emotional rendition of Oasis's "Live Forever" to honor the bombing's victims, a change coordinated hours before the show.[18][19] Rehearsals emphasized technical integration for live band configurations, particularly for acts like the Foo Fighters, ensuring seamless transitions between high-energy rock setups and the projection-mapped stage amid tight schedules.[20] This preparation underscored the event's commitment to authentic musical delivery within its innovative design framework.[21]Ceremony Details
Date, Venue, and Host
The 38th Brit Awards ceremony was held on 21 February 2018.[22][23] The event took place at The O2 Arena in London, a venue with a capacity of 20,000 that has hosted the awards for multiple years.[22][24] The 2018 ceremony was a sold-out affair, drawing an attendance of approximately 20,000 live audience members, which included music industry executives, artists, and celebrities.[25] Comedian Jack Whitehall hosted the event for the first time, bringing his signature wit to the proceedings through a series of opening monologues and interstitial segments.[26][27] His hosting featured humorous jabs at music industry figures, such as teasing Olly Murs about his social media habits during a public incident and poking fun at Simon Cowell's hairstyle by comparing it to a political leader's.[27] Whitehall's style emphasized light-hearted commentary on celebrity culture and occasional geopolitical references, setting a playful tone for the evening.[27]Broadcast and Viewership
The 2018 Brit Awards ceremony was broadcast live on ITV in the United Kingdom, airing from 8:00 p.m. to 10:20 p.m. GMT on 21 February.[28] The main show had a runtime of approximately 140 minutes, encompassing host segments, award presentations, and performances. Preceding the main broadcast, the red carpet arrivals were covered on ITV2 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., hosted by radio presenters Clara Amfo, Alice Levine, and Roman Kemp, who conducted interviews with arriving celebrities and nominees.[29] Additional content, including performance clips, winner announcements, and behind-the-scenes footage, was made available on the official Brits YouTube channel shortly after the event and in the following days.[30] In terms of viewership, the ITV broadcast attracted an average audience of 4.5 million viewers in the UK, securing a 23% share of the available television audience in its time slot.[5] This represented a decline of 900,000 viewers from the 2017 ceremony, though it remained the most-watched program among 16- to 24-year-olds across all channels that year.[5] The broadcast peaked at 5.5 million viewers, particularly during high-profile performances.[5][31] Internationally, the ceremony was streamed live on YouTube for viewers outside the UK, marking the fifth consecutive year of this partnership to reach a global audience via the platform.[32] Over 1.5 million people accessed the live stream or video-on-demand content globally, with the accompanying Facebook red carpet stream reaching 6.1 million users.[33]Performances
Pre-Ceremony
The pre-ceremony events for the Brit Awards 2018 were held on the red carpet and a dedicated pre-show stage at The O2 Arena in London, providing live entertainment as celebrities arrived and helping to energize the audience in anticipation of the main broadcast.[8][29] These performances featured a lineup of British and international artists, including Paloma Faith delivering her hit single "Guilty," Clean Bandit collaborating with Julia Michaels on a medley of "Symphony" and "I Miss You," J Hus performing "Did You See," Liam Payne showcasing "Strip That Down," and Jorja Smith joining Stormzy for "Let Me Down."[29][34][35][36] The selection highlighted rising British acts such as Jorja Smith, the Critics' Choice Award winner, and J Hus, alongside established names, to foster excitement and showcase the diversity of the UK's music scene ahead of the televised ceremony hosted by Jack Whitehall.[29][37]Main Show
The main show of the 2018 Brit Awards, held on 21 February at The O2 Arena in London and hosted by Jack Whitehall, featured a series of high-energy performances interspersed with award presentations, blending pop, rock, grime, and hip-hop acts to showcase global and British talent. The ceremony opened with Justin Timberlake delivering a dynamic set from his album Man of the Woods, starting with "Midnight Summer Jam" accompanied by dancers and transitioning into a duet of "Say Something" with Chris Stapleton, backed by a gospel choir for an uplifting, soulful close to the opener.[38] This performance set a vibrant tone, highlighting Timberlake's fusion of pop, country, and R&B elements. Subsequent acts maintained the momentum, with Rag'n'Bone Man performing his hit "Skin" in a soulful collaboration with Jorja Smith, emphasizing raw vocal power and emotional depth amid a minimalist stage setup. Dua Lipa, fresh off winning British Female Solo Artist, took the stage for an empowering rendition of "New Rules," surrounded by female dancers in a visually striking display of unity and pop precision.[39] Ed Sheeran followed with a poignant solo acoustic performance of "Supermarket Flowers" from his album ÷, delivering a heartfelt, stripped-back moment that evoked strong audience emotion through its themes of loss and family.[40] The international flair continued with Kendrick Lamar's theatrical set, beginning with a glitchy instrumental intro to "FEEL." from DAMN. before launching into "New Freezer" (featuring Rich the Kid), where he rapped atop a glass enclosure containing a Lamborghini that was dramatically smashed by Rich the Kid using a baseball bat, symbolizing disruption and intensity.[41] Rock energy surged with Foo Fighters' recreation of their "The Sky Is a Neighborhood" music video, performing on the roof of a chalet-like structure, capturing the song's cosmic rock vibe.[42] Liam Gallagher brought Oasis nostalgia with a gritty rendition of "Live Forever" as a tribute to the victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena bombing, his signature swagger amplifying the anthem's defiant spirit. Rita Ora delivered a medley blending "Your Song," "Anywhere," and "For You" (duet with Liam Payne), showcasing her versatile pop style on a colorful, geometric stage that transitioned seamlessly between tracks. Sam Smith provided a tender, piano-led performance of "Too Good at Goodbyes," their vulnerable delivery underscoring the ballad's themes of heartbreak and restraint.[43] The night closed with Stormzy's explosive grime set, opening with "Blinded by Your Grace, Pt. 2" under simulated rain with a gospel choir, before shifting into "Big for Your Boots" and an impromptu freestyle rap addressing social issues, including praise for "black girl magic" and Daniel Kaluuya's success, while sharply criticizing Prime Minister Theresa May for the government's inadequate response to the Grenfell Tower fire: "Yo, Theresa May, where's the money for Grenfell? / What, you thought we just forgot about it?"[44] Notable moments integrated speeches with the proceedings, such as during Gorillaz's acceptance for British Group, where Damon Albarn launched into a slurred, impassioned anti-Brexit rant, urging the UK to avoid isolation—"Don't let it become isolated and don't let yourselves become cut off"—before being abruptly cut off by the show's music cue, sparking divided reactions among viewers. Stormzy's freestyle further amplified the ceremony's political edge, blending artistry with activism on issues like racial inequality and government accountability. These elements, woven throughout the award handouts, underscored the 2018 Brits as a platform for both celebration and commentary.[21]Awards
