Founding and early development
Saveetha Engineering College (SEC) was established in 2001 by Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, a dedicated medical professional serving as the Founder Chairman, under the aegis of the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust—a registered charitable society founded in 1986 to promote medical relief and education.[2][6] The college emerged as an extension of the trust's educational mission, which had previously focused on medical and paramedical fields, including the Saveetha Dental College (1988), College of Nursing (1992), and College of Physiotherapy (1993).[6] Approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and affiliated with Anna University from its inception, SEC aimed to deliver high-quality engineering education aligned with international standards, emphasizing practical skills and research orientation.[2] In its early years, the college began modestly with an initial intake of 180 students across three undergraduate branches: Computer Science and Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, and Information Technology, with 60 students each.[7] The Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, for instance, started with 60 students, reflecting the institution's targeted focus on core engineering disciplines.[8] Postgraduate programs were introduced shortly thereafter, broadening the academic offerings to include advanced studies in engineering and management. This foundational phase prioritized infrastructure development on a 25.58-acre campus in Chennai's Thandalam suburb, fostering a conducive environment for technical education amid rapid growth in India's engineering sector.[2] By the mid-2000s, SEC benefited from the broader institutional evolution when the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust attained deemed university status in 2005 for its other institutions, becoming Saveetha University (later renamed Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in 2017).[6] This institutional evolution enhanced resource sharing and curriculum innovation, enabling the college to expand its student body and departmental scope while maintaining AICTE oversight. Early achievements included establishing research centers and gaining initial accreditations, positioning SEC as a niche player in engineering education and research within Tamil Nadu.[9] Over the first decade, enrollment grew steadily, with additions such as Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2002 and Mechanical Engineering in 2003, laying the groundwork for subsequent expansions in programs and facilities.[7]Integration and expansion
Following its establishment in 2001 by the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust under the leadership of Dr. N. M. Veeraiyan, Saveetha Engineering College benefited from the trust attaining deemed university status in 2005 for its other institutions, which became Saveetha University (later renamed Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences in 2017). This development aligned engineering programs with broader multidisciplinary resources and facilitated shared administrative oversight and academic support across trust institutions, while SEC maintained its affiliation with Anna University.[6][10] The expansion phase post-2005 focused on program diversification and infrastructural growth. By the 2010s, the college had introduced additional undergraduate and postgraduate courses, expanding its offerings to include specialized fields such as mechanical engineering, resulting in 15 UG programs and 8 PG programs by 2020. Student enrollment grew substantially, reaching over 6,400 by the early 2020s, supported by the development of research centers and collaborations through Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with international institutions. The campus infrastructure expanded within the larger 245-acre SIMATS footprint, incorporating advanced laboratories and facilities to accommodate this growth.[2][6] Key milestones in this period included the attainment of autonomous status from the UGC in 2019-2020, allowing curriculum flexibility and innovation in teaching methods. The college also received Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) recognition from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in 2018, bolstering research expansion. These developments positioned Saveetha Engineering College as a key institution under the Saveetha Medical and Educational Trust, alongside SIMATS, which by the 2020s encompassed over 15,000 students and multiple schools, reflecting sustained institutional growth.[2][6]Campus
