Background

[edit]

To Be Loved was commissioned by Michael's record label after the success of his fifth studio album, and seasonal record, Christmas. The album was entirely produced by Bob Rock, and was recorded in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and Los Angeles. The album includes ten standards and four original songs all co-written by Bublé, three with longtime collaborators Bob Rock, Alan Chang and Amy Foster-Gillies. "After All", one of the four original tracks, was written by Bryan Adams, Alan Chang, Steven Sater and Jim Vallance, and co-performed with Bryan Adams. The album also features appearances from actress Reese Witherspoon on "Somethin' Stupid", Naturally 7 and The Puppini Sisters, and includes covers of songs such as the Bee Gees' "To Love Somebody", Dean Martin's "Nevertheless (I'm in Love with You)", the Miracles' "Who's Lovin' You", Jackie Wilson's "To Be Loved", and Scotty Wiseman's "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You?"

In an interview posted on his official website, Bublé stated: "My new record is about love, happiness, fun and yummy things. Getting to work with my friend and longtime collaborator Bob Rock, who was also responsible for "Call Me Irresponsible", "Crazy Love" and "Christmas", and produced the entire album, was very exciting. We're a good team. I love the songs we selected this time out. It was also terrific working once again with my songwriting partners". Bublé was scheduled to perform ten dates at London's O2 Arena from June 30, 2013, in promotion of the album.[1]

To Be Loved received mostly positive reviews from music critics. AllMusic's Matt Collar found that the album "isn't just a perfect showcase for Bublé's voice, it's also one of his most diverse and enjoyable albums."[8] At The Canberra Times, James Baldwin told that Bublé "has a lot to deliver to keep both fans and critics impressed", which he noted that "Michael's voice seems to be getting better and better with each release", and called the release "perfect."[9] Colin Stutz of Idolator said that "his performance is ever strong and mature" because "Buble uses that power to carry the album poignantly, be it songs he wrote or those by others."[10] At The Oakland Press, Gary Graff stated that this effort is "indeed a buoyant affair, marked by love songs sung in his distinctive manner, something altogether different from the classical bombast of a Josh Groban or the crooner stylings of Bublé’s big band-fronting forebears."[11] The Scotsman alluded to how "Buble's slick vocals cannot be faulted throughout".[12] Elysa Gardner of USA Today evoked how "Bublé sounds like a man in love on this new collection of pop and soul standards and original tunes", and that allows "his clear, limpid voice is as technically supple as ever, and there's more genuine verve (and grit) in his delivery."[15]

Peter Goddard of the Toronto Star wrote that the album is "Sure not about making any musical breakthrough[s]".[14] AW for the Shields Gazette called the " music formulated for minimal offence, watered down with minimal risk, and, as such, failing to provoke any form of emotion", which is the "embodiment of the colour beige; painfully safe, somewhat dull and seemingly dreamt up as an ideal kitchen decoration."[13] At The Vancouver Sun, Francois Marchand called the album "exactly what it should be: A middle-of-the-road jazz-pop crooner record that sparkles in your ears like a million little fizzy sugar-pop bubbles and is just cookie-cutter enough to please the masses."[16] Virgin Media's Matthew Horton told that "the majority of To Be Loved boils down to straight retreads of admittedly great songs", and "that's just the way it goes. You don't come to Bublé for post-dubstep glitch experiments. You come for the polar opposite, delivered with style."[17]

The success propelled the Tour, which grossed over $100 million and visited arenas worldwide from 2013 to 2014.

    Background

    Development

The development of To Be Loved began in the early 2010s, as Michael Bublé sought to create an album that reflected his personal growth and evolving musical identity following the success of his previous releases. Influenced by his impending fatherhood—his wife, Luisana Lopilato, was pregnant with their first child, expected in August 2013—Bublé aimed for a more authentic and mature sound, moving away from the polished perfectionism of his earlier collaborations with producer David Foster. He described the project as a celebration of "love, happiness, fun and yummy things," emphasizing emotional depth drawn from his life experiences. Bublé chose to entrust the entire production to , a longtime friend and collaborator known for his work with rock acts like Metallica and Mötley Crüe, marking a departure from his usual team to infuse the album with an edgier, rock 'n' roll vibe. Rock's involvement brought a vibrant energy, with Bublé noting that the process felt "easier" and more genuine, allowing him to avoid "cringing" at overproduced elements from past records. The album's conception focused on blending classic standards with contemporary originals, prioritizing organic recording techniques inspired by Bublé's idols such as , , , and . This eclectic approach involved gathering musicians to "vibe out" in the studio, fostering natural collaboration over rigid structures. Song selection was a deliberate process emphasizing heartfelt covers and new material that aligned with the album's romantic theme, including four originals co-written by Bublé. Key choices featured reinterpretations of classics like the ' "To Love Somebody," the Jackson 5's "Who's Loving You," and Jackie Wilson's "" (the album's title track), alongside standards such as Frank Sinatra's "Young at Heart" and a duet with on "Something Stupid." Bublé collaborated with songwriting partners like for the original "After All," selecting tracks that allowed for emotional experimentation while honoring their . The development phase culminated in recording sessions held in , British Columbia, and , where the focus on live band performances and minimal digital intervention helped capture the album's swinging, soulful essence. Despite describing the overall process as a "grind," Bublé viewed it as a pivotal step in asserting greater artistic control.

    Recording

The recording of To Be Loved took place primarily at three studios: in , ; in Hollywood, ; and Penrose Recorders in . These sessions marked a collaborative effort led by producer , known for his work with rock acts like Metallica and Mötley Crüe, who brought a fresh, edgier approach to Bublé's big-band style by infusing elements of rock 'n' roll into the arrangements. Rock's production emphasized authenticity, allowing Bublé to explore a more mature sound that blended standards with original material, resulting in what Bublé described as his most personal album to date. Mixing was handled at in , with contributions from engineers (on tracks 2 and 7), (on tracks 3, 4, and 10), and Randy Staub (on track 15). Additional mixing occurred at MixLA in for tracks 2, 7, and 8, and at in New York for tracks 3, 4, and 10. The process involved close collaboration with Bublé's longtime team, including arranger and the Dap-Kings , which added a vibrant, soulful layer to several tracks, enhancing the album's . Bublé noted that this recording phase felt liberating, stating, "I came in as a boy, and I’m a man now," reflecting a shift toward greater artistic confidence. Mastering was completed at Sterling Sound in New York, ensuring a polished, radio-ready finish that balanced the album's orchestral elements with its contemporary edge. The sessions, spanning late 2012 into early 2013, incorporated live band recordings to capture organic energy, a hallmark of Rock's method, which prioritized full takes over isolated elements. This approach contributed to the album's cohesive feel, with Bublé actively co-writing four originals during the process to personalize the collection of covers.

    Composition

    Musical style

To Be Loved is characterized by a blend of and pop genres, incorporating swing, , and elements that align with Michael Bublé's signature style. The album features smooth, romantic vocals over lush orchestral arrangements, often evoking the classic sounds of mid-20th-century standards while infusing contemporary production techniques. Produced by , the record emphasizes big, brassy instrumentation, including prominent riffs and rhythmic drum patterns reminiscent of Frank Sinatra's era, creating an upbeat and feel-good atmosphere across much of its runtime. The musical style draws heavily from vocal jazz and traditional pop, with tracks that swing energetically and incorporate soulful undertones. Covers like "You Make Me Feel So Young" showcase peppy saxophones and lively big band swings, paying homage to Sinatra's influence, while originals such as "It's a Beautiful Day" introduce power pop dynamics with catchy, radio-friendly hooks. Duets add variety, as seen in "Something Stupid" with Reese Witherspoon, which adopts a salsa-inflected melody contrasting Bublé's baritone with lighter vocals, and "After All" with Bryan Adams, blending rock-infused balladry. The album also ventures into soul and funk elements in renditions like "Who's Lovin' You," featuring raw, jazzy riffs that deviate slightly from pure swing toward a more emotive, Jackson 5-inspired groove. Overall, the style maintains a balance between nostalgic and modern accessibility, with heartfelt ballads like the title track "To Be Loved" offering waltz-like romance and sentimental depth. This approach mirrors Bublé's previous albums such as It's Time and Crazy Love, but introduces subtle rhythmic variations and collaborations to refresh the formula without straying far from his core jazz-pop foundation.

    Themes and song selection

The album To Be Loved explores themes of love in its multifaceted forms, including romantic passion, familial bonds, and profound gratitude for personal fulfillment, reflecting Michael Bublé's evolving life experiences during its creation. Central to these themes is Bublé's stemming from his 2011 marriage to Argentine actress and the anticipation of their first child, born in August 2013, which infused the record with a sense of joy and emotional maturity. Songs like the original "I Got It Easy" articulate this thankfulness, with Bublé expressing appreciation for his life's blessings despite industry pressures to exclude such introspective material. Similarly, the album balances exuberant romance, as in covers evoking youthful infatuation, with heartfelt reflections on enduring relationships, creating a narrative arc of love's transformative power. Bublé's song selection process emphasized a deliberate blend of four original compositions—co-written by the artist himself, marking the highest number of new tracks on any of his studio albums to date—and ten covers drawn from jazz standards, pop classics, and Motown influences. The originals, including the upbeat lead single "It's a Beautiful Day," "Close Your Eyes," "I Got It Easy," and the duet "After All" with Bryan Adams, were crafted to draw directly from Bublé's personal narrative, such as "Close Your Eyes," which honors the influential women in his life, including his wife, mother, and sisters. This personal touch contrasts with the covers, selected to pay homage to Bublé's musical roots; for instance, "You Make Me Feel So Young" channels Frank Sinatra's swing era vitality, inspired by his grandfather's admiration for such artists, while "Who's Lovin' You" nods to Motown soul recorded with the Dap-Kings horn section. The curation aimed to evoke a "jaunty musical/variety show" atmosphere, mixing high-energy tracks for broad appeal with subtler, jazz-inflected pieces to showcase vocal nuance and thematic depth. Covers like "To Love Somebody" (Bee Gees) and "Have I Told You Lately That I Love You" (Scotty Wiseman) amplify the romantic motifs, while selections such as "Straighten Up and Fly Right" add playful energy, aligning with Bublé's impending fatherhood. This strategic mix not only honors Bublé's big-band heritage but also allows the originals to stand out as authentic expressions of his growth, ensuring the album's themes resonate through both reinterpretations and new material.

    Marketing efforts

Bublé's promotional activities emphasized his charismatic persona and the album's blend of standards and originals, aiming to appeal to both longtime admirers and broader pop audiences. The impromptu set featured covers such as "Who's Lovin' You" from the album, capturing viral attention through social media shares and news coverage, which underscored his approachable, street-level appeal despite his mainstream stardom.
