List of minor planets: 10001–11000
List of minor planets: 10001–11000
from Wikipedia

The following is a partial list of minor planets, running from minor-planet number 10001 through 11000, inclusive. The primary data for this and other partial lists is based on JPL's "Small-Body Orbital Elements"[1] and data available from the Minor Planet Center.[2][3] Critical list information is also provided by the MPC,[2][3] unless otherwise specified from Lowell Observatory.[4] A detailed description of the table's columns and additional sources are given on the main page including a complete list of every page in this series, and a statistical break-up on the dynamical classification of minor planets.

Also see the summary list of all named bodies in numerical and alphabetical order, and the corresponding naming citations for the number range of this particular list. New namings may only be added to this list after official publication, as the preannouncement of names is condemned by the Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature of the International Astronomical Union.

The list of minor planets 10001–11000 encompasses 1,000 sequentially numbered minor planets in the Solar System, assigned permanent numerical designations from 10001 to 11000 by the (MPC), the official body responsible for cataloging astrometric observations and of minor planets, asteroids, and comets. These designations are granted once an object's is reliably determined from sufficient observational data, typically spanning at least four oppositions to ensure accuracy. This range of numbers corresponds to minor planets whose orbits were finalized during a period of accelerating discoveries in the late and early , reflecting advancements in and survey programs that dramatically increased the rate of detections and numberings—reaching over 3,000 new numberings in 1999 alone, a that included the assignment of the 10,000th permanent number. The majority of these objects are main-belt asteroids orbiting between Mars and , with diameters generally ranging from a few kilometers to tens of kilometers, though a small fraction includes near-Earth objects and other orbital classes. Notable examples in this list include (10001) , discovered in 1969 at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory and later named to honor the Italian city associated with early astronomical contributions, highlighting how older discoveries received numbers as improved observations refined their orbits. The segment also features asteroids named after geographical locations, scientists, and cultural figures, as discoverers propose proper names following numbering, subject to approval by the International Astronomical Union's Committee on Small-Body Nomenclature. Overall, this list contributes to the broader catalog of over 875,000 numbered minor planets as of 2025, aiding research in solar system dynamics, composition, and potential hazards.

Introduction

Scope and Data Sources

The numbering system for minor planets is administered by the (MPC), the official body responsible for cataloging small Solar System bodies under the (IAU). Permanent numbers are assigned once an object's orbit is reliably computed from sufficient observations, typically requiring data spanning at least four oppositions to confirm a unique trajectory and distinguish it from other bodies. This process ensures the object's identity is secure before it joins the official numbered catalog, which as of 2025 includes over 875,000 entries. Prior to numbering, newly discovered minor planets receive provisional designations to track them temporarily. These follow a standardized format consisting of the four-digit discovery year, followed by a space, a letter for the of discovery (A for January 1–15, B for –31, skipping I, with Z unused), and a sequence letter (A onward, skipping I and sometimes J) or an additional number if more than 25 objects are found in the same , as in the example 1976 SS2 for the second object discovered in the second half of 1976. Provisional designations are published in Minor Planet Circulars and Electronic Circulars as observations accumulate. Data for this article is drawn primarily from the MPC's orbital database, which provides official permanent numbers, provisional designations, discovery circumstances (including date, site, and discoverer), and names where assigned. , dynamical classifications (such as main-belt or near-Earth), and physical parameters like estimated diameters—often derived from infrared surveys such as or NEOWISE—are sourced from the Laboratory's (JPL) Small-Body Database, which integrates MPC data with ephemeris computations and thermal modeling. Names are proposed by discoverers and approved by the IAU's Working Group for Small Bodies Nomenclature (WGSBN), ensuring adherence to thematic and ethical guidelines. This entry encompasses exactly 1000 minor planets, from (10001) to (11000), predominantly main-belt asteroids with semi-major axes between 2.1 and 3.3 AU, discovered between 1969 and 1994 during a period of increasing survey capabilities at observatories like and Palomar. Subsequent sections present data in tables detailing the number, name (if any), provisional designation, discovery details, orbital class or family affiliation (e.g., or Koronis families), and diameter estimates from photometry, typically ranging from 5 to 20 km for these objects. As of November 2025, the MPC has assigned permanent numbers to all bodies in this range, reflecting the completeness of the catalog for lower-numbered objects. Approximately 20% remain unnamed, pending proposals from discoverers within the 10-year window post-numbering, though some may never receive names due to lost tracking or . The article's is up-to-date with MPC and JPL records for core attributes but does not incorporate post-2020 spectral classifications from missions like or JWST for the minority of objects observed in those surveys.

Historical Context

The minor planets numbered from 10001 to 11000 were primarily discovered between the late and the mid-, with the earliest in the range, such as , identified on , 1969. These objects received permanent numbers in the late and early as observational data accumulated. The discovery rate accelerated significantly during the and , as systematic surveys expanded the catalog of main-belt asteroids from a few thousand to over 10,000 by the end of the decade, reflecting broader efforts to map the asteroid population. This period marked a transition from sporadic visual observations to dedicated photographic patrols, enabling the detection of fainter objects and contributing to a deeper understanding of the main asteroid belt's density and distribution. Several observatories were instrumental in these discoveries. The Crimean Astrophysical Observatory at Nauchnyj, , led numerous efforts, particularly through its 40-cm double astrograph, resulting in over 1,200 numbered minor planets identified there between 1966 and 2007, many within this numerical range. In the United States, in hosted the Palomar Planet-Crossing Asteroid Survey (PCAS), initiated in 1973, which uncovered hundreds of asteroids, including main-belt objects, using the 46-cm Schmidt telescope. Japan's Kiso Observatory contributed through its Schmidt telescope surveys in the 1970s and 1980s, led by astronomers like Hiroki Kosai and Kiichirō Furukawa, who detected dozens of main-belt asteroids. Additionally, the European Southern Observatory's La Silla site in supported discoveries via its 1-meter Schmidt telescope, with observations in the 1980s and early 1990s yielding several new minor planets through international collaborations. Among the prolific discoverers, Lyudmila Ivanovna Chernykh from Nauchnyj stands out, credited with 267 minor planet discoveries, including many in the 10000s during the 1970s and 1980s as part of the ITA-CRAO survey. Her husband, Nikolai Stepanovich Chernykh, holds the record with 537 discoveries, often collaborating on main-belt searches that bolstered this range. Tamara Mikhaylovna Smirnova, also at Nauchnyj, identified 307 asteroids, focusing on exposures that captured transient solar system objects. Overall, approximately 200 unique discoverers or teams contributed to this segment, highlighting a global effort involving astronomers from the , the , , and . Technologically, this era saw a shift from traditional visual searches to widespread use of photographic plates for wide-field imaging, which allowed for the detection of thousands of faint asteroids previously missed. Early adoption of charge-coupled devices (CCDs) in the late , starting at facilities like Palomar and Kiso, further enhanced sensitivity and reduced exposure times, paving the way for modern digital surveys. Regarding naming, most objects in this range initially received only provisional designations upon discovery; permanent numbering preceded naming, with about 800 of the 1,000 bodies formally named by 2025, often honoring scientists, places, or cultural figures through proposals to the .

Lower Number Range (10001–10500)

10001–10100

The minor planets numbered 10001 to 10100 mark the beginning of the four-digit provisional designations transitioning to permanent numbers, with most discoveries occurring between 1969 and 1979 from observatories in the and . These asteroids are predominantly located in the main , exhibiting semi-major axes ranging from approximately 2.5 to 3.5 AU, which places them between the orbits of Mars and . Their estimated diameters, derived from observations and assumptions, typically fall between 5 and 10 km, consistent with small main-belt objects. Discoveries in this range were heavily influenced by systematic surveys at the Nauchnyj (now part of Astrophysical Observatory), where the Chernykh family of astronomers accounted for roughly 40% of the identifications, reflecting the era's emphasis on surveys in the outer main belt. Notable among these is (10001) , the first in the sequence, a rare V-type asteroid in the main belt suggestive of basaltic composition linked to differentiated parent bodies like Vesta; it was discovered on October 8, 1969, by Lyudmila I. Chernykh using a 0.4-meter , with an estimated diameter of 4.1 km. Another V-type example is (10010) Rudruna, co-discovered by the Chernykh duo in 1971, highlighting the prevalence of primitive and differentiated types in early surveys. (10018) Lykawka honors planetary scientist Patryk Sofia Lykawka for contributions to scattered disk dynamics, while (10019) Wesleyfraser is a slow rotator with a period exceeding 100 hours, challenging standard tumbling models for small asteroids. (10020) Bagenal commemorates Fran Bagenal, a key scientist on the mission to . The following table presents representative entries from this range, selected to illustrate discovery patterns, naming conventions, and physical characteristics; full details for all 100 are available via the Minor Planet Center database.

10101–10200

The minor planets in the range 10101–10200 represent a transitional period in asteroid discovery, with a notable shift toward mid-1980s and early observations as international surveys expanded beyond earlier Soviet-dominated efforts. These objects, mostly main-belt , were detected through dedicated programs at sites like La Silla in and increasing contributions from Japanese facilities such as Kiso Observatory, highlighting the rise in collaborative global efforts post-1980. Approximately including one , (10199) Chariklo, based on orbital classifications from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory's Small-Body Database. Physical characteristics for these minor planets are typical of main-belt populations, with an average estimated diameter of about 7 km derived from and magnitude data in the JPL database. Several have been classified as S-type (silicaceous) asteroids, indicating compositions rich in silicates and metals, as determined from spectroscopic surveys like those conducted by the Small Main-belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey. The following table lists all 100 minor planets in this range, with columns for permanent number, name (if assigned), provisional designation, discovery date, discoverer(s), and observatory (including IAU code where available). Data is sourced from the Center's discovery circumstances file. Names often honor cultural figures, scientists, and geographical features, reflecting the era's naming conventions. Due to the volume, the table is presented comprehensively but concisely; full orbital and physical details are available via the MPC database.

Note: The table above includes representative entries from the range; the complete 100 objects follow a similar format, with 42 named as of the latest MPC update. Discoveries are concentrated in (65 objects) at sites, with 12 from Japanese observatories like Kiso (code 380). Unique facts in this block include namings after cultural icons and locations, such as 10101 Fourier, honoring the French mathematician Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Fourier for his contributions to theory; 10105 Holmhällar, named after a place on , ; and 10136 , commemorating the French post-impressionist painter . Increased Japanese discoveries, such as those at Kiso Observatory, account for about 12% of the block, marking the emergence of Asian contributions in hunting. Trends in this range show a rise in collaborative discoveries post-1980, with multi-institution surveys like Uppsala-ESO contributing over 40 objects, contrasting earlier single-observatory dominance and setting the stage for larger-scale programs in subsequent blocks.

10201–10300

The minor planets numbered 10201 to 10300 represent a cohort primarily discovered between 1981 and 1992, with a concentration of observations from facilities during the late and early 1990s. Key discovery sites include the Observatory (Tautenburg) in , which contributed numerous detections through systematic photographic surveys led by astronomers like Freimut Börngen, and the (ESO) at La Silla in , where the 1-meter Schmidt facilitated identifications under optimal southern sky conditions. These efforts reflect the era's reliance on ground-based optical surveys before automated programs dominated, yielding orbits for objects mostly in the main . Several objects in this range belong to the Hungaria family, an inner main-belt group defined by semi-major axes between approximately 1.78 and 2.03 , eccentricities under 0.18, and inclinations of 16–35 degrees, making them distinct from the broader belt due to dynamical isolation by resonances with Mars. About 15% of these minor planets exhibit eccentricities greater than 0.2, highlighting their potential for studies in orbital evolution and close approaches to inner planets, as influenced by secular resonances and the 4:1 . Notable namings honor contributions to . For instance, (10278) Virkki recognizes Anne Virkki, a researcher specializing in radar observations of near-Earth asteroids at the . (10280) Yequanzhi is named for Quanzhi Ye, a comet and small-body dynamics expert who discovered C/2007 N3 (Lulin). Similarly, (10281) Libourel commemorates cosmochemist Guy Libourel, whose work at Observatoire de la Côte d'Azur focuses on chondrule and meteorite formation processes.

10301–10400

The minor planets numbered 10301 to 10400 were primarily discovered during the early , reflecting the growing efficiency of systematic surveys in identifying faint main-belt objects. Many in this block were found using photographic plates or early CCD technology at key observatories, including La Silla in and Anderson Mesa in , with contributions from automated systems like Spacewatch at Kitt Peak, which accelerated discoveries of small asteroids in the outer main belt. These objects typically orbit between 2.2 and 3.3 AU from the Sun, with semi-major axes averaging around 2.7 AU, and exhibit low albedos consistent with primitive compositions. Physical characterizations of this range reveal a predominance of C-type (carbonaceous) asteroids, comprising over 70% of the sample, characterized by dark surfaces rich in carbon and silicates, with estimated diameters averaging approximately 6 km based on absolute magnitudes between 13 and 14. These properties suggest origins in the outer , where volatile-rich materials were preserved from the early solar system. Notable examples include spectroscopic studies confirming hydrated minerals in several members, linking them to meteorites. This block features namings honoring artists, scientists, and geographic locations, often proposed by discoverers and approved by the International Astronomical Union. For instance, 10310 Delacroix commemorates French painter Eugène Delacroix, discovered on August 16, 1990, at La Silla Observatory by Eric W. Elst, with an estimated diameter of 7.0 km and a C-type spectrum. Similarly, 10343 Church honors American Hudson River School painter Frederic Edwin Church, found on November 4, 1991, at Palomar Observatory. 10347 Murom is named for the Russian city on the Oka River, discovered April 23, 1992, also at La Silla by Elst. Scientific tributes include 10358 Kirchhoff, recognizing physicist Gustav Kirchhoff for spectrum analysis contributions, and 10361 Bunsen, honoring chemist Robert Bunsen, his collaborator; both were discovered in 1993 and 1994, respectively, at La Silla, with diameters around 5-6 km and primitive spectral types. The following table summarizes key details for selected notable minor planets in this range, focusing on discovery and physical data; full orbital and observational records are maintained by the .

These discoveries underscore the transition to more automated surveys in the , such as Spacewatch, which contributed several objects in this block by scanning for faint movers, enhancing the catalog of small main-belt asteroids.

10401–10500

The minor planets numbered 10401 to 10500 represent a cohort primarily discovered in 1998, reflecting the accelerating pace of asteroid surveys in the mid- driven by automated telescopes. Observations from the (LINEAR) project at , accounted for the majority of these finds, enabling the numbering of roughly 50 objects per year during this peak period. This range exhibits a higher concentration of Flora family members compared to adjacent blocks, with these S-type asteroids typically featuring diameters of 4 to 12 km and orbits in the inner main belt. The Flora family, originating from an ancient collisional breakup, dominates due to its dense clustering in proper like semimajor axis around 2.2 AU. Several asteroids here affiliate with the Koronis family, an older S-type group in the outer main belt formed over two billion years ago from a catastrophic collision; examples include shared eccentricities near 0.05 and inclinations of about 3 degrees. Approximately five objects show lightcurve irregularities suggestive of binary configurations, such as potential companions, but or direct imaging confirmation remains undetermined as of recent analyses. The following table summarizes all 100 entries in standard format, drawing from official discovery circumstances. Columns include the permanent number, name (if assigned), provisional designation, discovery date, and primary discoverer or observatory. Unnamed objects retain blanks for names. Upper Number Range (10501–11000)

10501–10600

The minor planets numbered 10501 to 10600 represent a cohort predominantly discovered during the late , driven by the advent of automated wide-field surveys that dramatically accelerated the identification of small bodies in the solar system. The (LINEAR) program, operated by MIT's Lincoln Laboratory under U.S. sponsorship, was instrumental in this era, providing over 90% of global observations in alone and discovering thousands of objects, many of which received numbers in this range upon . These discoveries underscored the transition to high-volume, systematic monitoring, contrasting with earlier manual observations and enabling better characterization of the asteroid population. Compositional analysis of this group reveals notable diversity, with a blend of X-type asteroids exhibiting metallic surfaces—indicative of high iron and content—and carbonaceous objects from the outer main belt, where semi-major axes typically exceed 3 AU. Estimated diameters average around 8 km, derived from absolute magnitudes assuming geometric albedos of 0.05–0.15 for dark types and higher for metallics, though individual sizes vary from 3 to 15 km based on thermal models. This mix highlights the transitional nature of the outer belt, where dynamical processes like Yarkovsky effects influence orbits over gigayears. Several objects in this range possess eccentricities greater than 0.3, elevating their potential as near-Earth objects (NEOs) and prompting ongoing and optical follow-up for impact . Naming conventions in this segment often evoke cultural and geographical ties, particularly to sites in and , as approved by the International Astronomical Union's Committee on Small-Body Nomenclature; examples include honors for observatories and historical locales, fostering global recognition of astronomical contributions. Approximately 10% of these asteroids benefit from post-2000 albedo refinements, primarily from Arecibo and Goldstone observations, which have constrained sizes to within 20% accuracy for about 10 objects by measuring echo strengths and shapes. Orbit determinations have further improved through incorporation of mission astrometry, with Data Release 3 (2022) providing sub-milliarcsecond precision for over 50 in this range, reducing semi-major axis uncertainties by factors of 5–10 compared to pre- ephemerides. Representative examples from this range are summarized in the table below, focusing on discovery circumstances, physical parameters, and orbital classes. Data are drawn from official catalogs, emphasizing LINEAR contributions where applicable.

10601–10700

The minor planets numbered 10601 to 10700 were primarily discovered in the and early , reflecting the increasing efficiency of automated survey programs during that era. This range includes a mix of main-belt asteroids and several L5 Jupiter Trojans sharing stable orbits 60° trailing . These Trojans orbit at a semi-major axis of about 5.2 AU, trapped in the Lagrangian point due to gravitational balance between the Sun and , as determined from orbital elements computed by the . The remaining objects are predominantly main-belt asteroids with semi-major axes around 3 AU, typical of the inner asteroid belt population. Discovery efforts in this range mark a shift toward large-scale surveys, with and NEAT (Near-Earth Asteroid Tracking) contributing roughly 60% of the discoveries, according to records from the . Earlier finds, such as those from Spacewatch at Kitt Peak, account for several L5 Trojans, including examples like (10652) and (10660) Nausikaa, observed in 1998 using imaging. Names in this range often honor educators and scientists, such as (10601) Plaskett, named for astronomer John S. Plaskett, and (10642) Hieronymus, for , reflecting the tradition of commemorating intellectual contributions. One object in this range, (10636) , has been noted as a potential due to observed dust ejection or cometary-like activity, though confirmation requires further observations; this highlights the transitional nature between asteroids and comets in the outer belt. Compositional diversity, briefly extending from the previous range (10501–10600), includes primitive C-type spectra for many Trojans, suggesting origins in the early solar system's trans-Neptunian . Overall, this block underscores the expansion of Trojan surveys, with stable orbits ensuring long-term dynamical stability over billions of years.

10701–10800

The minor planets numbered 10701 to 10800 represent a batch of objects primarily discovered during the late and early , coinciding with the ramp-up of automated survey programs that boosted annual discovery rates to over 100 by 2000. These surveys, including precursors to the Catalina Sky Survey at the University of Arizona's Mount Bigelow station and contributions from Lowell Observatory's Near-Earth-Object Search (NEOS), identified numerous main-belt asteroids through systematic CCD imaging, enabling the rapid numbering of previously observed but untracked objects with well-determined orbits. The range reflects the transition to higher-volume observations, with many objects traced back to provisional designations from the and recovered through improved ephemeris calculations. Most objects in this range are S-type or C-type main-belt asteroids with semi-major axes between 2.1 and 3.3 AU, but notable outliers include high-inclination examples exceeding 20 degrees, which suggest dynamical interactions with or early Solar System scattering events. Approximately 10% exhibit perihelion distances under 2 AU, qualifying as Amor near-Earth objects that approach but do not cross , potentially posing long-term monitoring interest due to their Earth-crossing potential over . Spectral analyses indicate metallic compositions in several cases, consistent with M-type classifications for a subset, implying origins in differentiated parent bodies. Diameters for many in this range were refined by NASA's (WISE) mission in 2010, using thermal emission data to estimate sizes typically between 3 and 12 km, with values aiding compositional insights; for instance, higher (>0.1) correlate with metallic types. Unique naming in this block honors cultural and historical figures or sites, such as (10702) Arizorcas, named for the in , highlighting the tradition of commemorating human heritage in minor planet nomenclature approved by the . No scattered disk objects are present, as these numbers correspond to inner Solar System populations, contrasting with trans-Neptunian catalogs.

10801–10900

The minor planets numbered 10801 to 10900 consist primarily of main-belt asteroids discovered between 1980 and 1998, with the majority identified by automated sky surveys such as the LINEAR program operated by the and Japanese observatories like those at Oizumi and Chichibu. These objects orbit the Sun at distances of 2.1 to 3.4 AU, exhibiting typical main-belt dynamical characteristics, including low inclinations and eccentricities that place most in stable Kirkwood gap-avoiding resonances. Post-2020 naming efforts by the IAU for Small Bodies (WGSBN) have assigned proper names to several previously provisional designations in this range, often honoring modern , cultural figures, or locations relevant to astronomical heritage. Physical characterizations from surveys reveal an average diameter of approximately 7.5 km for these asteroids, derived from thermal modeling of over 100,000 main-belt objects, though individual sizes vary from under 2 km to over 10 km based on and assumptions. measurements show higher variations (0.05 to 0.4) compared to lower-numbered ranges, indicating diverse properties possibly linked to collisional evolution and gradients across the belt. Spectral classifications from the (SDSS) data, covering multi-color photometry for thousands of main-belt asteroids, predominantly categorize these as S-type (silicaceous) in the inner belt and C-type (carbonaceous) in the outer portions, with rarer V-types suggesting vestigial basaltic material from differentiated parent bodies. Orbital refinements for this range increasingly incorporate Yarkovsky effect modeling, where asymmetric thermal emission induces semimajor axis drift rates of up to 10^{-4} per million years for sub-10 km asteroids, influencing long-term dynamical pathways toward resonances. This thermal drift, first directly detected in main-belt populations through semimajor axis distributions, helps explain the delivery of smaller fragments to near-Earth orbits. detections have risen in this numbering block due to mid-2000s and lightcurve campaigns, with around three confirmed cases highlighting the prevalence of close companions among kilometer-scale main-belt objects.

10901–11000

The minor planets numbered 10901 to 11000 were primarily discovered in the late 1990s, coinciding with the ramp-up of systematic CCD-based surveys that accelerated the cataloging of small bodies in the asteroid belt. These objects, mostly main-belt asteroids with diameters typically ranging from 5 to 15 kilometers, were observed using facilities like the Mount Lemmon Observatory and the LINEAR survey at Socorro, New Mexico, highlighting the shift toward automated detection methods that enabled high-volume discoveries. Orbital elements derived from these observations place the majority in stable resonances with Jupiter, contributing to our understanding of the belt's dynamical structure. Modern characterizations of these minor planets have benefited from advanced instrumentation, with several benefiting from via NASA's , which detected hydration features suggestive of past aqueous alteration on their surfaces—evidence of volatile-rich parent bodies in the early solar system. imagery of select targets in this range provided resolved views of irregular shapes and potential craters, underscoring rotational dynamics and collision histories. As the capstone of this numbering block, 10999 Braga-Ribas honors Brazilian astronomer Fábio Braga-Ribas for contributions to studies of minor planet rings and satellites. No significant namings have been approved by the IAU in this range since 2023 as of November 2025, though a few provisional proposals remain under review. As of 2025, roughly 30% of these 100 minor planets remain unnamed, reflecting the prioritization of scientific data over in high-throughput surveys—a trend that persisted into the as annual discoveries exceeded 10,000. Multi-wavelength analyses, combining visible-light photometry from ground-based telescopes with thermal emission data from Spitzer, have emphasized compositional diversity, with hydration signatures appearing in about 20% of studied samples, linking these bodies to outer belt origins. This segment signifies the transition to era-defining high-volume numbering, where surveys like dominated, paving the way for over a million provisional designations by mid-century. Representative examples from this range are summarized in the table below; full listings are maintained by the Minor Planet Center and JPL Small-Body Database.
