Key Information
Charles Otto Puth Jr. (/puːθ/; born December 2, 1991) is an American singer-songwriter and record producer. His initial exposure came through the viral success of his song covers uploaded to YouTube. Puth signed with the record label eleveneleven in 2011 after performing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Puth signed with Atlantic Records and Artist Partner Group to release his debut single, "Marvin Gaye" (featuring Meghan Trainor) in 2015.[3] Later that year, he co-wrote, produced, and guest performed on Wiz Khalifa's single "See You Again", which peaked atop the US Billboard Hot 100 for 12 non-consecutive weeks, received Diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), and earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song nomination, along with three nominations at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards, including Song of the Year.
"Marvin Gaye" served as lead single for Puth's first full-length album, Nine Track Mind (2016), which, despite critical failure, peaked within the top ten entries of both the Billboard 200 and UK Albums Chart. Its single, "We Don't Talk Anymore" (featuring Selena Gomez), peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. His second album, Voicenotes (2018), was met with a critical incline and similar commercial success. The album spawned the hit single "Attention", and was nominated for Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. Puth's third studio album, Charlie (2022), likewise debuted within the Billboard 200's top ten spots and was supported by the singles "Light Switch" and "Left and Right", both of which were hits.
Puth has done songwriting and production work with other artists throughout his career. In 2021, he co-wrote and produced the single "Stay" for Justin Bieber and the Kid Laroi, becoming his first non-performing production to peak the Billboard Hot 100.
Early life
[edit]Charles Otto Puth Jr. was born December 2, 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey,[4] to Debra, a music teacher[5][6] who also wrote commercials for HBO,[7] and Charles Otto Puth Sr., a builder and real estate agent.[5] He has two younger siblings, twins Stephen and Mikaela.[5] His father is Catholic[8] and his mother is Jewish.[9]
When Puth was two years old, his right eyebrow was permanently scarred in a nearly fatal dog bite incident.[10] His mother introduced him to classical music and began teaching him the piano at age four.[11] He started studying jazz at age 10[11] and participated in a summer youth jazz ensemble at Count Basie Theatre's Cool School[6] in Red Bank, New Jersey, at 12.[12] Puth was once hired by The Count Basie Theatre to play in a Charlie Brown production.[6] In grade six, he went door to door selling a Christmas album called Have a Very Charlie Christmas that he had recorded and produced, making $600 in sales.[11][13]
He attended the Holy Cross School and Forrestdale Middle School in Rumson[14] before graduating from the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School in 2010.[15] During his seventh grade to senior years, he attended Manhattan School of Music Pre-College[16] as a jazz piano major and a classical studies minor.[14][17] Puth is a 2013 graduate of Berklee College of Music, where he majored in music production and engineering.[18]
Career
[edit]2009–2014: Career beginnings
[edit]In September 2009, at age 17, Puth started his own YouTube channel, entitled Charlies Vlogs, posting comedy videos and acoustic covers.[19] During this time, he would make theme songs and jingles for other YouTubers.[20]
In 2010, Puth released the music video of his first song, "These Are My Sexy Shades".[21] In December 2010, he released his debut extended play, The Otto Tunes, an independent release.[22] In 2011, he won an online video competition sponsored by Perez Hilton, Can You Sing?, with a version of Adele's "Someone like You", which he performed with Emily Luther.[16] In the same year Ellen DeGeneres announced that she had signed Puth and Luther to her label, eleveneleven, after seeing their performance of "Someone like You".[23] Puth and Luther had performed the song on the show.[24] In December 2012 he released a promotional single, "Break Again", with additional vocals by Emily Luther.[25] The music video was released days later.[26] On January 25, 2012, Puth and Luther performed the song and Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.[27] Puth also performed at an event supporting DKMS Delete Blood Cancer, the world's largest bone marrow donor center, in October 2012.[28] Puth left eleveneleven in late 2012.[29] On October 23, 2013, he released his second independent extended play, Ego, to streaming online.[30][31] Puth was credited with the production and writing of songs and jingles for fellow YouTube personalities. He wrote the theme song for Shane Dawson's Shane and Friends podcast and skits, the intro jingle for the videos of the Vlogger family the SHAYTARDS, the original theme song for Charles Trippy's vlog Internet Killed Television, and a song for the tour and movie of YouTube group Our 2nd Life, as well as several singles for Our 2nd Life member Ricky Dillon. In 2014 he released the promotional single "L.U.V."[32] The music video was directed by Andrew Vallentine.[33] In the same year, he co-wrote the song "Celebrate" by Pitbull, included in his eighth studio album Globalization and featured in the 2014 DreamWorks Animation film Penguins of Madagascar.[34]
2015–2016: "See You Again" and Nine Track Mind
[edit]
In early 2015, Puth signed with APG/Atlantic, and his previous records were removed from iTunes.[36] In February 2015, Puth released his debut single "Marvin Gaye", which features American singer-songwriter Meghan Trainor.[37] The single has been certified 2× Platinum in Australia, topped the charts in New Zealand, Ireland, and the United Kingdom, and peaked at number 21 on the US Billboard Hot 100.[38][39] Puth wrote, co-produced, and was featured on a song with Wiz Khalifa, "See You Again", a tribute to Paul Walker, included in the Furious 7 soundtrack. While Khalifa wrote the rap lyrics, the rest of the song has been credited to Puth. The song peaked at number 1 on the Hot 100 chart for twelve non-consecutive weeks.[40][41] "See You Again" was nominated for three Grammy Awards: Song of the Year, Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Best Song Written for Visual Media. It was also shortlisted for the Song of the Year for the BBC Music Awards and was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song at the 73rd Golden Globe Awards.[42] He produced the song "Slow Motion" for Trey Songz and has arranged sessions with Jason Derulo and Lil Wayne.[43]
Puth starred as Meghan Trainor's love interest in the music video for her song "Dear Future Husband", released in March 2015. In the video, she meets Puth on an online dating service and he comes to Trainor's home with a carryout pizza, which succeeds in impressing her.[44] On May 1, 2015, Puth released a five-song extended play, Some Type of Love.[45] In June 2015, he released the promotional single "Nothing but Trouble" with Lil Wayne, from the soundtrack to the documentary 808: The Movie.[46] During 2015, Puth worked on several albums of other artists. He co-wrote and produced the "Broke" and "Pull Up" for Jason Derulo's album Everything Is 4,[47] co-wrote "Bombastic" with Bonnie McKee from the album of the same title,[48] and produced "Working Class Heroes (Work)" on CeeLo Green's album Heart Blanche.[49]
Pre-orders for Puth's first full-length album Nine Track Mind began on August 20, 2015, along with the second single "One Call Away". The song peaked at number 12 in the United States, 26 in the United Kingdom and 4 in Australia.[50] By June 2017 the song had sold 1,575,475 copies domestically.[51] Puth released a remix for the song, entitled "One Call Away (Coast to Coast Mix)", featuring the Americans Tyga, Ty Dolla Sign and Brett Eldredge and the Mexican singer Sofia Reyes.[52]
His first full-length album, Nine Track Mind, was released on January 29, 2016.[53] The album debuted at number 3 in the United Kingdom.[54] It peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. It also received a score of 37 out of 100 on Metacritic, becoming the 15th worst-reviewed album on the site.[55] Puth embarked on his first concert tour, the Nine Track Mind Tour, in March 2016.[56]
In 2016, Puth was the first musician to sign a deal with Deutsch Music, a subsidiary of Deutsch Inc.[57]
2017–2018: Voicenotes
[edit]
On April 21, 2017, Puth released "Attention", the lead single from his second studio album Voicenotes.[58] The song peaked at number 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his highest-charting single as a solo artist.[59] The second single, "How Long", was released on October 5, 2017, and peaked at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100.[60] Puth also collaborated with One Direction's Liam Payne on the single "Bedroom Floor", for which provided background vocals and co-produced.[61] In 2018, he was featured on G-Eazy's single "Sober".[62] On January 4, 2018, Puth released a promotional single from Voicenotes, "If You Leave Me Now" featuring Boyz II Men.[63] Puth also announced that he would be pushing the release date back four months to May 11, 2018.[64]
On March 15, 2018, "Done for Me" was released as the third single from Voicenotes. The song features singer Kehlani. The song also peaked at number 53 on the Billboard Hot 100. On March 25, 2018, Puth released the fourth single "Change" featuring James Taylor.[65] A day earlier, Puth sang the song at the March for Our Lives event in Los Angeles.[66] The album also features the songs "The Way I Am", the fifth single off the album.
Voicenotes was released on May 11, 2018, to generally positive reviews from critics;[67] it debuted and peaked at number 4 on the US Billboard 200 with 58,000 album-equivalent units, of which 39,000 were pure album sales.[68] Puth embarked on the Voicenotes Tour in 2018, with Hailee Steinfeld as a special guest.[69]
2019–2025: Charlie
[edit]
In August 2019, Puth released "I Warned Myself";[70] another single, "Mother", was released in September,[71] and a third, "Cheating on You", in October.[72] In early 2020, Puth announced that he had scrapped what he had written for his third studio album;[73][74] he remarked in 2022 that he "didn't really like any of the music" he released in 2019, and that he "felt like [he] was kind of pretending to be a cool guy".[75]
However, he still worked on music in 2020. He contributed keyboard to four tracks on the Ozzy Osbourne album Ordinary Man, released on February 21, 2020.[76] He featured on the Lennon Stella song "Summer Feelings" for the soundtrack of the Warner Bros. Pictures animated film Scoob! He released "Girlfriend" in June,[77] contributed "Free" to the soundtrack of the Disney+ film The One and Only Ivan the same month, and released "Hard on Yourself", featuring Blackbear, in August.[77] Finally, he featured on two remixes at the end of the year, first of the Jvke song "Upside Down" in October and then of the Sasha Alex Sloan song "Is It Just Me?" in November.
On July 9, 2021, the Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber released the single "Stay", the lead single of Laroi's mixtape F*ck Love 3+: Over You, which was co-written and co-produced by Puth. The song reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Laroi's first single, Bieber's eighth single, and Puth's first non-performing production to top the chart.[78]
In September 2021, Puth released "After All" with Elton John as part of John's album The Lockdown Sessions.[79] The same month, he started documenting on TikTok a process of "combin[ing] a seemingly random bunch of thoughts and noises made with different objects into a pop song", which went viral on the platform;[80] this led to the release of "Light Switch" on January 20, 2022, as the first single from his third studio album, Charlie.[81] This was followed by "That's Hilarious" in April[82] and "Left and Right" featuring Jungkook in June.[83] On July 7, Puth revealed Charlie's cover art and its release date.[84] "Smells Like Me",[85] "I Don't Think That I Like Her",[86] and "Charlie Be Quiet!"[87] were all released in September. Charlie was released on October 7 along with a music video for its song "Loser".[88]
On October 21, 2022, Puth was featured alongside Shenseea on Calvin Harris's single "Obsessed" from Harris' sixth album Funk Wav Bounces Vol. 2.[89] On March 31, 2023, Puth released the single "That's Not How This Works", with music duo Dan + Shay.[90] On April 14, 2023, Puth released a remix of "That's Not How This Works" which added Sabrina Carpenter as a featured artist alongside Dan + Shay.[91] On June 15, 2023, Puth featured on "Angel Pt. 2" alongside South Korean singer Jimin and American singers Jvke and Muni Long, which was a continuation of "Angel Pt. 1" released for the Fast X soundtrack.[92]
On August 18, 2023, Puth released "Lipstick", which was originally intended as the lead single from his fourth album.[93] He also featured on Stray Kids' single "Lose My Breath", which was released on May 10, 2024.[94]
On October 4, 2024, The Charlie Puth Show[95] began streaming on Roku. A faux-reality series following Puth, it co-starred Corporate Natalie as his manager and Ruby Karp as his assistant. It also featured drop-ins from Will Ferrell, John Legend, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Wiz Khalifia and other stars.[96]
Puth was referenced by Taylor Swift in her 2024 song "The Tortured Poets Department", in which she sings, "We declared Charlie Puth should be a bigger artist," attracting media attention.[97] Encouraged by this shoutout, Puth released the single "Hero" on May 24 of that year.[98] On November 8, 2024, he released a Christmas song titled "December 25th".[99]
Puth was slated to participate in the ninth season of Singer, a Chinese competition show for professional singers, in June 2024. However, his appearance was canceled following backlash over his pro-Israel stance on X. He deleted his X account the same month.[100] Puth made his debut on the show during its tenth season on May 30, 2025.[101]
2025: Whatever's Clever!
[edit]In September 2025, Puth played a series of concerts at the Blue Note Jazz Club in New York City, with further shows planned in October at the Los Angeles location. On October 16, 2025, Puth announced that his fourth studio album, Whatever's Clever!, would be released on March 6, 2026. The announcement was accompanied by the release of the album's lead single, "Changes".[102]
Personal life
[edit]Growing up, Puth was bullied at school. He said, "They would team up against me so bad and they would kick me in a place that wouldn't feel fantastic and I would need to throw up and they would then say I was pretending to throw up."[103] On On Air with Ryan Seacrest he said he had a nervous breakdown from "just being overworked—and I'm in my head a lot and that, in combination with jetlag and, you know, the self-realization that I am getting more famous and my privacy goes out the window pretty much every day—it's just not what I'm used to, and I don't think I'm ever going to be used to it, and my therapy is to just put melody to it and sing it."[104]
In 2022, Puth began dating family friend Brooke Sansone.[105] The couple got engaged on September 7, 2023,[106] and they married one year later, on September 7, 2024.[107] On October 16, 2025, he announced that his wife was pregnant with their first child together. He shared the news in a clip from the music video for his song "Changes".[108]

Childhood and family background
Charles Otto Puth Jr. was born on December 2, 1991, in Rumson, New Jersey.[8][4] He grew up as the eldest child in a family of five, with parents Debra Puth, a music teacher who composed jingles for HBO, and Charles Otto Puth Sr., a builder and real estate agent.[9][10] Puth has two younger siblings: a twin brother named Stephen, who later pursued songwriting and music performance, and a sister named Mikaela.[11][12] Puth has a distinctive scar on his right eyebrow from a dog bite he suffered at age two, a near-fatal incident that required plastic surgery and numerous stitches; this scar has earned him the nickname "斷眉" (duàn méi, "broken eyebrow") in Chinese-speaking internet culture and media.[13] The Puth family's heritage reflects mixed European roots, with Puth's father identifying as Catholic of Italian, German, and Hungarian descent, and his mother of Jewish ancestry.[4] They resided in a waterfront home overlooking the Shrewsbury River in Rumson, a prosperous suburb along the Jersey Shore known for its residential enclaves and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean.[10] This environment provided a stable, upper-middle-class upbringing, where Puth attended local schools including Forrestdale Middle School.[14][15] Music permeated the household from Puth's earliest years, influenced directly by his mother's profession; he began formal piano instruction under her guidance at age four.[16] This familial immersion laid foundational exposure to performance and composition, though Puth's parents emphasized balanced development alongside creative pursuits.[10]Musical training and early influences
Puth commenced formal piano instruction at age four under the guidance of his mother, Debra, a music teacher who introduced him to classical music fundamentals.[17][3] This early exposure laid the groundwork for his technical proficiency, including the development of perfect pitch, which enabled him to discern and replicate notes with exceptional accuracy from a young age.[18][17] By age ten, Puth shifted toward jazz piano studies, enrolling in the Precollege Division of the Manhattan School of Music, where he honed improvisation and jazz techniques.[3] He supplemented this with private lessons in jazz and improvisation from instructor Jim Josselyn at the School of Music and Drama in Little Silver, New Jersey, commuting weekly from his home in Rumson.[10] These experiences fostered his ability to blend structured classical forms with the spontaneous harmonic progressions characteristic of jazz, as evidenced by his later analyses of chord voicings from pianists like Bill Evans.[19] Puth's early artistic influences encompassed a mix of folk, soft rock, and R&B, including James Taylor, Jackson_Browne, and TLC, which shaped his initial songwriting sensibilities toward melodic accessibility and emotional narrative.[20] As his training progressed into jazz realms, he gravitated toward icons such as Bill Evans, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and R&B soloists like Bobby Brown and Ralph Tresvant, whose innovations in harmony and post-group independence informed his production approach and genre-blending style.[18][19] This foundation bridged classical rigor with improvisational freedom, enabling Puth to construct pop arrangements rooted in sophisticated chord theory rather than formulaic repetition.[21]Professional career
YouTube era and initial releases (2009–2014)
Puth began his YouTube presence earlier, creating channels such as "ChuckyPuth" in 2008 and several in 2009 including "CharliePuthMusic," "yayitscharlie," and "CharlieOttoPuth," before launching his main channel CharliesVlogs in September 2009 at the age of 17, where he posted a mix of comedy sketches, prank videos, parodies, original songs, and acoustic covers of popular tracks.[3] His early content often featured self-produced music with a humorous or lighthearted tone, reflecting his developing skills in songwriting, piano, and vocal performance honed from classical training.[22] One of his initial original releases was the comedic rap track "These Are My Sexy Shades," uploaded as a music video on April 19, 2010, which showcased his playful style and garnered modest online attention among early subscribers.[23] Later that year, on December 2, 2010, Puth self-released his debut extended play, The Otto Tunes, a seven-track project available digitally, featuring original compositions that blended pop, jazz influences, and personal lyrics produced entirely by him.[24] This EP marked his first structured music release, distributed independently via platforms like iTunes, though it achieved limited commercial reach beyond his growing YouTube audience. Puth's visibility surged in 2011 with a duet cover of Adele's "Someone Like You" alongside Emily Luther, uploaded on September 28, which accumulated millions of views and highlighted his emotive falsetto and harmonic arrangements.[25] The video's success led to an invitation to perform it on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2012, where host Ellen DeGeneres praised his potential, stating she foresaw him becoming a star.[26] This exposure boosted his subscriber count into the hundreds of thousands, establishing him as a promising online talent focused on covers of artists like John Mayer and Sam Smith alongside originals. By 2013, Puth released his second independent EP, Ego, a ten-track collection emphasizing soulful R&B elements and self-production, further demonstrating his evolution toward professional songcraft.[27] These efforts, combined with consistent YouTube output, attracted attention from industry figures, culminating in a signing with Artist Partner Group in late 2014, setting the stage for major-label transition without yet yielding mainstream hits.[28] In 2015, amid his rising fame, Puth deleted, privated, or unlisted most of his pre-fame YouTube videos due to embarrassment, rendering much of this early content lost media preserved in fan archives and discussed in lost media communities.[23] Throughout this period, Puth's content emphasized technical proficiency over viral gimmicks, building a niche following through authentic performances rather than polished marketing.Breakthrough success (2015–2016)
Charlie Puth's breakthrough occurred in 2015 with his collaboration on Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again," released on March 10, 2015, as the lead single from the Furious 7 soundtrack.[29] The track, co-written and co-produced by Puth as a tribute to Paul Walker, debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and ascended to number 1, where it remained for 12 nonconsecutive weeks, tying the record for the longest-running number-one rap single.[30] This achievement propelled Puth from relative obscurity to global recognition, with the song amassing billions of streams and views across platforms.[31] Prior to "See You Again," Puth had released "Marvin Gaye" featuring Meghan Trainor on February 10, 2015, which debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at number 87 in July and peaked at number 21 in October.[32] The single's moderate success in the US, combined with stronger international performance, helped establish Puth's solo presence after signing with Atlantic Records earlier that year.[33] Another single, "One Call Away," issued in August 2015, further built momentum by peaking at number 12 on the Hot 100 in early 2016.[34] In January 2016, Puth released his debut studio album Nine Track Mind on January 29, debuting at number 6 on the Billboard 200 with 65,000 album-equivalent units in its first week.[35] The album, featuring hits like "One Call Away" and "Marvin Gaye," achieved commercial success, surpassing 11 million equivalent album units worldwide through combined sales and streams.[36] This period solidified Puth's status as a pop artist, with Grammy nominations for "See You Again" in categories including Song of the Year.[33]Voicenotes and artistic evolution (2017–2018)
In April 2017, Charlie Puth released "Attention" as the lead single from his second studio album, marking a shift toward a more self-produced and introspective sound. The track, which debuted on April 21, drew from Puth's personal experience of emotional manipulation in a past relationship, emphasizing themes of suspicion and desire.[37][38] It achieved commercial success, peaking at number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts in several countries, signaling Puth's intent to evolve beyond his debut's formulaic pop.[39] Puth followed with additional singles throughout 2017 and early 2018, including "How Long" in October 2017, which addressed infidelity and regret, and collaborations like "If You Leave Me Now" featuring Boyz II Men in November 2017. These releases previewed Voicenotes, named after the voice memo app Puth used to capture raw song ideas directly from his phone, allowing for organic development without immediate studio polish. The album's creation involved extensive self-production by Puth, contrasting his more collaborative debut Nine Track Mind, as he delayed the project multiple times—originally slated for earlier release—to refine tracks and discard elements that felt inauthentic or label-driven.[40][41] This period represented Puth's artistic maturation, influenced by heartbreak and a desire to showcase his musicianship through live instrumentation and R&B-infused grooves reminiscent of 1980s influences like Michael Jackson and Prince. Puth articulated in interviews that fame had initially compromised his creative control, leading to "bland" output, but Voicenotes allowed him to prioritize vulnerability and technical precision, resulting in a critically praised shift from his earlier bubblegum pop toward sophisticated, relatable heartbreak anthems.[42][43] Released on May 11, 2018, via Artist Partner Group and Atlantic Records, the 13-track album featured minimal external production, underscoring Puth's evolution into a hands-on auteur.[44] Critics, such as those at The Atlantic, highlighted its "dorky pleasure" and polished execution as assets in a crowded pop landscape, reversing the panned reception of his 2016 effort.[45]Charlie album and mid-career projects (2019–2023)
Following the 2018 release of Voicenotes, Puth issued three standalone singles in 2019 intended as precursors to his next album. "I Warned Myself", produced in collaboration with Benny Blanco, was released on August 21, 2019.[46] "Mother" followed in September 2019, with "Cheating on You" arriving on October 2, 2019, completing a trilogy of tracks centered on personal relationships and introspection.[47] During 2020 and 2021, Puth shifted focus to songwriting and production for other artists, notably co-writing and co-producing "Stay" for Justin Bieber featuring The Kid Laroi, which debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2021 and remained there for seven weeks.[7] He also contributed to various projects amid delays in his own album production influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, Puth resumed solo releases with singles building toward his third studio album, Charlie. "Light Switch" debuted on January 31, 2022, peaking at number 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. "That's Hilarious" followed in April 2022, and "Left and Right" featuring BTS member Jungkook was released on June 24, 2022, reaching number 25 on the Hot 100. Charlie was released on October 7, 2022, via Atlantic Records, comprising 12 tracks including "Charlie Be Quiet!", "Smells Like Me", "Loser", and "I Don't Think That I Like Her".[48][49] The album debuted at number 10 on the Billboard 200, marking Puth's third consecutive top-10 entry.[36] Extending into 2023, Puth released "That's Not How This Works" featuring Dan + Shay on March 30, 2023, which entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number 57. "Lipstick" followed on August 18, 2023, serving as a bridge to future work. These mid-career efforts highlighted Puth's continued emphasis on self-produced pop with introspective lyrics, while he performed select live shows, including dates supporting the Charlie promotion.[50]Recent announcements and family milestones (2024–present)
In September 2024, Puth married his longtime partner Brooke Sansone in an outdoor ceremony at his family home in Montecito, California, following their engagement the prior December and after dating since 2022; the couple had known each other since childhood in New Jersey.[51][52] On October 16, 2025, Puth and Sansone announced they are expecting their first child, due in March 2026, revealing the news through an intimate scene in the music video for Puth's single "Changes," where Sansone displays her baby bump while the couple embraces.[53][51][52] Concurrently, Puth announced his fourth studio album, Whatever's Clever!, set for release on March 6, 2026, with "Changes" serving as the lead single, marking a shift toward more personal themes influenced by his impending fatherhood.[53][54] On November 30, 2025, the NFL announced that Puth will perform the National Anthem ahead of Super Bowl LX kickoff on February 8, 2026, at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.[55]Musical style and artistry
Genres, vocal techniques, and production methods
Charlie Puth's music is principally classified within the pop genre, incorporating elements of contemporary R&B, soul, and dance-pop, often with jazz and late 1980s to early 1990s R&B influences that contribute to its melodic complexity and emotional depth.[56][57][18] His tracks frequently blend these styles to create accessible yet sophisticated arrangements, as seen in albums like Nine Track Mind (2016), which features pop-soul structures alongside hip-hop and doo-wop inflections in collaborations. This fusion stems from his classical and jazz training, allowing him to integrate improvisational elements into mainstream pop frameworks without diluting catchiness.[21] Puth employs a vocal technique characterized by extensive use of falsetto and head voice for high-register notes, enabling smooth transitions from chest-dominant modal register to lighter, breathy upper extensions with precise control and agility.[58][59] His delivery often features a breathy placement in the chest voice for verses, shifting to falsetto in choruses for emotional peaks, as exemplified in "Attention" (2017), where he maintains rhythmic sharpness and avoids strain on sustained highs.[60] This approach, supported by his perfect pitch, allows for confident execution of wide-ranging melodies and layered harmonies, though it can result in a lighter tone compared to fuller head voice production.[17][61] In production, Puth adopts a self-directed method rooted in piano-based songwriting, starting with single-note melodies played sequentially to build hooks before layering synths, percussion, and multi-tracked vocals for density and texture.[62][63] He has discussed on TikTok the effectiveness of pop songs that gradually build layers and intensity from start to end, creating dramatic tension and release that makes the climax more impactful, while contrasting this with songs that begin too big and lack sufficient build-up.[64] This perspective informs his layering process, enhancing the dramatic structure of his arrangements. He treats the studio as an extension of instrumentation, recording from initial ideas to final mixes—often incorporating deliberate pauses and effects for propulsion—while drawing on his multi-instrumental proficiency, particularly piano, to prototype arrangements without reliance on external co-producers in core creative phases.[65][66] This iterative process emphasizes empirical testing via platforms like TikTok for fan feedback, prioritizing harmonic richness and pop accessibility over genre conformity.[65][67]Key influences and songwriting approach
Puth's musical influences encompass a blend of classical training, jazz improvisation, and pop-R&B traditions. Exposed to classical music through his mother, a music teacher who introduced him to composers and piano technique from an early age, Puth developed perfect pitch and a foundation in structured composition.[68] His jazz affinity grew from an obsession with pianist Bill Evans, whose harmonic complexity and improvisational style informed Puth's chord progressions and melodic phrasing, evolving into accessible pop structures.[19] Early listening included folk and soft rock artists such as James Taylor and Jackson Browne, alongside R&B acts like TLC and solo breakouts from groups, including Bobby Brown.[20][18] Figures like Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Frank Sinatra further shaped his vocal delivery and phrasing, evident in tracks echoing Jackson's "P.Y.T." or Wonder's soulful introspection.[69][70][71] Puth's songwriting process prioritizes capturing spontaneous ideas via mobile voice memos, where he records raw instrumentals, shakers, pianos, and vocal sketches directly into apps like Voice Memos, forming the basis for tracks on albums such as Voicenotes. From these demos, he constructs songs by first establishing chord progressions and initial melodies, then layering production elements—synths, harmonies, and effects—often playing all instruments himself to maintain control.[62][65] Puth has shared on TikTok that effective pop songs gradually build up layers and intensity from the start to the end to create dramatic tension and release, making the climax more impactful. He contrasts this with songs that start too big and lack proper build-up.[64] While capable of piano-based singer-songwriter methods, he favors iterative digital refinement over traditional linear writing, incorporating deliberate pauses and nontraditional sonic textures to drive momentum.[66] Puth emphasizes efficiency, advising against overthinking lyrics or re-recording vocals excessively, to preserve authenticity in pop hooks and choruses.[72] This self-reliant approach, honed through Berklee studies and YouTube experimentation, yields intricate yet radio-friendly results, as demonstrated in real-time composition sessions where he builds hits from single notes outward.[20][73]Personal life
Early relationships and dating history
Puth's earliest documented romantic involvement occurred during middle school, which he later described as his first relationship; he ended it by passing a note on a Post-It to his unnamed girlfriend.[74] This anecdote, shared by Puth himself in a March 2017 Twitter question-and-answer session, provides the sole public insight into his pre-fame personal life, with no further details or additional early partnerships verified in reliable accounts.[75] Prior to his mainstream breakthrough in 2015, Puth maintained privacy regarding relationships, and no other pre-professional romantic connections have been substantiated beyond self-reported stories. His initial high-profile linkage emerged in early 2016 with singer Selena Gomez, following their professional collaboration on the track "We Don't Talk Anymore" from Puth's debut album Nine Track Mind. Puth has indicated the song's lyrics reflected elements of their brief involvement, though the relationship concluded amid reported tensions.[76] [77] Subsequent early-career reports included sightings with actress Bella Thorne in late 2016, sparking brief romance speculation after they were photographed together in Miami; the pair was said to have dated intermittently into 2017 before parting ways.[78] [79] In 2017, Puth was linked to actress Danielle Campbell following joint appearances at events like a Friendsgiving gathering, though neither confirmed a formal relationship, and the association faded by year's end.[78] [80] These connections, drawn largely from media observations and unverified sightings, characterize Puth's dating history during his ascent to prominence, contrasting with the relative scarcity of information from his formative years.Marriage and family expansion
Charlie Puth began dating Brooke Sansone, a public relations coordinator and longtime family friend, in the summer of 2022.[81] The couple got engaged in early 2023, with Puth proposing after roughly seven months of dating.[82] They married on September 7, 2024, at Puth's family home in Montecito, California, in a private ceremony attended by close family and friends.[83] Puth announced the marriage on Instagram on September 17, 2024, sharing photos and expressing that Sansone had been his love "always."[84] Sansone, born in 1999, grew up connected to the Puth family through social circles in New Jersey, though the couple did not date until adulthood.[85] At the time of their wedding, Puth was 32 and Sansone was 25, marking a relatively quick progression from dating to marriage following their engagement.[82] In October 2025, Puth and his wife announced they are expecting their first child, with the pregnancy reveal featured in the music video for Puth's single "Changes" released on October 16, 2025.[53] [51] Puth confirmed the news during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on October 22, 2025, expressing hopes that the baby would enjoy music and discussing his preparations for fatherhood.[86] This will be the couple's first child together, expanding their family less than a year after their wedding.[53] In a 2026 interview on the podcast "The Person Who Believed In Me" with David Begnaud, Puth opened up about experiencing intense sensory sensitivity to sound, describing how everyday noises can feel overwhelming and even make him physically sick, as he perceives sound at "200%" intensity compared to others. He noted that music, along with his wife, is one of the primary things that calms his nervous system during overstimulation, and he uses earplugs in noisy environments to manage this. Puth has also discussed his ADHD diagnosis from several years prior and related challenges like anxiety and fear of judgment that affected his early willingness to perform publicly until age 18. These disclosures highlight his use of music as a therapeutic tool for emotional regulation.[87]Controversies and public disputes
Relationship allegations and fan conflicts
In July 2025, Bella Thorne accused Charlie Puth of fabricating claims about their short-lived 2016 romance, alleging he publicly portrayed her as unfaithful on X (formerly Twitter) after she refused to engage in sexual relations with him. Thorne described Puth's actions as initiating a "hate train" against her, stating he "lied to the entire world about me" to retaliate for her boundaries.[88][89][90] Puth's original 2016 posts claimed Thorne had cheated on him mere days after they were photographed kissing, fueling online backlash toward her at the time.[91] Thorne's 2025 revelations, shared via social media and interviews, reignited scrutiny of Puth's past behavior in relationships, with some fans and commentators labeling it as indicative of entitlement or vindictiveness.[92][93] No public response from Puth to these specific accusations has been documented as of October 2025. Separately, Puth has faced ongoing fan criticism over comments about his rumored involvement with Selena Gomez, stemming from their 2015 collaboration "We Don't Talk Anymore." In a March 2023 podcast appearance, Puth explained his 2017 hit "Attention" drew partial inspiration from Gomez allegedly confiding in him about her ex-boyfriend [Justin Bieber](/page/Justin Bieber) while denying him physical intimacy despite invitations, prompting fans to decry the remarks as "creepy" and objectifying.[94][95][96] Puth later deleted related tweets interpreted as shading Gomez amid her relationship news, intensifying perceptions of lingering resentment among her supporters.[97] Fan conflicts escalated in September 2025 when Puth performed "We Don't Talk Anymore" live on the same day as Gomez's wedding to Benny Blanco, drawing mockery and accusations of insensitivity from online audiences.[98] These incidents highlight tensions between Puth and segments of Gomez's fanbase, who view his disclosures as breaches of privacy or attempts to capitalize on past associations.[99]Backlash over statements and associations
In February 2016, Puth faced criticism for comments made on the red carpet at the 13th Annual Global Green USA Pre-Oscar Party regarding Kesha's legal battle with producer Dr. Luke, whom she accused of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse in a lawsuit filed to void her contract. Puth described the situation as "devastating for both parties," named Dr. Luke as one of his "production idols," and expressed regret over the absence of new music from Kesha, stating, "Nobody wins at the end of the day. I hope Kesha comes out with some new songs because we really need that." Critics and fans argued that these remarks minimized Kesha's abuse allegations by prioritizing industry impacts and musical output over her claims of trauma, leading to accusations of insensitivity and, in later retrospectives, labeling Puth a "rape apologist."[100] Puth did not directly endorse Dr. Luke's actions but defended admiration for his production work amid the ongoing dispute, which some defended as neutral commentary on a contract issue rather than denial of wrongdoing. Later in 2016, following a brief rumored romantic association with actress Bella Thorne—sparked by their appearance together at Jingle Ball in Miami—Puth publicly accused her on Twitter (now X) of infidelity with her ex, Tyler Posey, tweeting an apology to Posey while implying Thorne had cheated. Thorne responded in July 2025, claiming Puth "lied to the entire world about me" and incited a "hate train" against her because she refused to have sex with him during their non-exclusive interaction, clarifying they were never officially dating.[88] Puth's posts, which he later addressed indirectly, fueled online harassment toward Thorne at the time, though he has not publicly responded to her 2025 clarification.[88] Puth drew renewed fan backlash in March 2023 when 2017 comments about his song "Attention"—widely speculated to reference his rumored 2015 fling with Selena Gomez—resurfaced via a deleted tweet and interview clips. In the interview, he described a woman (implied to be Gomez) inviting him to sleep over but withholding intimacy, framing it as manipulative to maintain emotional attachment without physical reciprocity.[96] Gomez's fans, known as Selenators, condemned the remarks on platforms like Twitter and TikTok as entitled and creepy, with responses such as "Charlie Puth is the perfect example of how most men act when a woman denies them access to her body," accusing him of shading a former collaborator on their joint 2016 track "We Don’t Talk Anymore."[96] The timing coincided with Gomez's romance rumors with Zayn Malik, amplifying scrutiny. In 2024, Puth encountered significant online criticism for perceived pro-Israel associations, particularly after unverified screenshots showed him liking social media posts by actor Noah Schnapp—including one decrying Hamas as terrorists and equating support for Palestinians with endorsement of the group—amid Israel's military response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks.[101] Additional reports highlighted Puth's likes and shares of pro-Israel content dating back to 2015, family ties to Zionism (e.g., his sister's views), and friendships with Israeli Defense Forces affiliates, which some outlets framed as insensitive to the Gaza humanitarian crisis documented by the United Nations.[100] This fueled boycott calls against his collaboration with K-pop group Stray Kids on the May 10, 2024, single "Lose My Breath," with fans citing his stance—alongside resurfaced Dr. Luke comments and alleged past Islamophobic posts—as reasons to reject the track, despite its commercial promotion by JYP Entertainment.[100] Puth has not issued direct statements on the Israel-Hamas conflict, and the backlash reflects polarized online discourse where opposition to Hamas is often conflated with broader geopolitical positions by activist communities.[101]Discography

Performances and media appearances
Concert tours
Charlie Puth's debut headlining tour, the Nine Track Mind Tour, supported his first studio album and ran for two months across North America starting in March 2016.[112] The Voicenotes Tour, promoting his second album, commenced on July 11, 2018, at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, Canada, and included 32 North American dates with Hailee Steinfeld as the opening act, concluding the continental leg on September 1, 2018, in West Palm Beach, Florida, before extending to international venues through November 22, 2018, in Tokyo, Japan.[113][114] In 2022, Puth undertook the One Night Only Tour, a limited series of 12 intimate performances beginning October 23 at Count Basie Center for the Arts in Red Bank, New Jersey, and extending to select North American and European cities including New York, Toronto, Chicago, and London.[115][116] The Charlie Live Experience Tour started on May 24, 2023, at the Pavilion at Toyota Music Factory in Dallas, Texas, and visited major U.S. markets through summer 2023, emphasizing live renditions of tracks from his third album Charlie.[117] Puth launched the Something New World Tour in late 2024, with its Asian leg opening November 21 at Wuyuanhe Stadium in Haikou, China, followed by dates in Beijing, Taiwan (December 5 at Kaohsiung Arena), Macao (December 14), and Japan (December 17–18 at K-Arena Yokohama).[118][119][120]Filmography and television
Puth's filmography primarily consists of soundtrack contributions rather than extensive acting roles, with limited on-screen appearances in feature films. He provided the song "See You Again" for Furious 7 (2015), which featured in the film's tribute sequence, but did not have an acting credit. Similarly, his music appeared in Penguins of Madagascar (2014) and Fast X (2023), though without performative roles. In Book Club (2018), Puth made a brief cameo appearance as a younger character interacting with the lead actresses.[121][122] On television, Puth has appeared mostly as himself in guest capacities, often performing music on talk shows and variety programs such as The Late Late Show with James Corden (2015 onward) and Good Morning Britain (2014). A notable early guest spot occurred in 2014 on the sitcom Undateable, where he portrayed a fictionalized version of himself in an episode focused on dating mishaps. In December 2025, Puth was announced as a performer for Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2026.[123][124][125] Puth expanded into hosting and starring with The Charlie Puth Show, a six-episode mockumentary comedy series that premiered on The Roku Channel on October 3, 2024. The program satirizes Puth's efforts to diversify beyond pop music into acting, comedy, and other fields, featuring segments like commercial jingle creation and reality TV pitches, with guest stars including Will Ferrell, John Legend, "Weird Al" Yankovic, Wiz Khalifa, and Courteney Cox providing comedic guidance and collaborations. Episodes explore themes of celebrity reinvention, such as Puth attempting wilderness survival for branding or clashing with collaborators over creative control.[126][127][128] On February 8, 2026, Puth performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at Super Bowl LX at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, ahead of the 6:30 p.m. ET kickoff.[55]Accolades and commercial achievements
Major awards
Charlie Puth has received recognition through various music industry awards, with wins concentrated around his breakthrough collaboration "See You Again" with Wiz Khalifa from the Furious 7 soundtrack.
