The Redmi Note 3 served as the successor to the Redmi Note 2, positioning Xiaomi to expand its budget-oriented Redmi lineup by incorporating premium elements typically reserved for higher-end devices, such as a full-metal body and a substantial battery capacity, to appeal to cost-conscious consumers seeking enhanced durability and endurance.[7][8] Xiaomi's design philosophy for the Redmi Note 3 emphasized a shift toward flagship-inspired aesthetics in the mid-range segment, adopting a full-metal unibody construction with an anodized and sandblasted finish to deliver a premium texture without additional coatings, while prioritizing ergonomics for comfortable one-handed operation on its 5.5-inch form factor. This approach drew from high-end smartphone trends, balancing a sleek aluminum exterior with practical considerations like antenna placement via plastic caps at the top and bottom, resulting in a device weighing 164 grams and measuring 8.65 mm thick.[4][8][9] The device was teased by Xiaomi in late October 2015 through promotional imagery hinting at its metallic design and color options, building anticipation ahead of its official unveiling on November 24, 2015, in China, where the initial MediaTek-powered variant was introduced as the company's first all-metal smartphone in the Note series.[7][10][11] Key design specifications included slightly curved edges along the sides to improve grip and handling, a hybrid SIM tray supporting dual nano-SIM or one SIM plus microSD expansion, and seamless integration of a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor positioned below the camera module for quick 0.3-second unlocks with chip-level security.[9][12][4]

Production and manufacturing

The Redmi Note 3 was primarily assembled at Foxconn facilities in China, aligning with Xiaomi's established supply chain for its initial global launch in March 2016. To localize production and comply with India's manufacturing incentives, assembly shifted to Foxconn plants in Chennai starting in March 2016, marking it as one of the early devices under the "Made in India" initiative and enabling faster distribution to the domestic market. This dual-location strategy supported Xiaomi's emphasis on cost-effective scaling while reducing import dependencies. Key components were sourced from specialized suppliers to balance performance and affordability. Display panels were provided by suppliers including Tianma Microelectronics and Sharp, ensuring a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS LCD with consistent quality across units. The rear camera utilized Samsung sensors, such as the S5K3M2 ISOCELL in the MediaTek variant, while the front-facing 5 MP camera employed an OmniVision OV5670 module. Battery cells came from Amperex Technology Limited (ATL), contributing to the device's battery capacity of 4,000 mAh for the MediaTek variant and 4,050 mAh for the Snapdragon variant with reliable lithium-polymer construction. The device was developed under codenames "hennessey" for the MediaTek variant and "kenzo" for the Snapdragon variant. Xiaomi planned initial production runs in the millions to match high anticipated demand, facilitating rapid sales growth—over 2.3 million units shipped in India within six months of launch. Quality control focused on durability through the shift to a full metal unibody chassis from plastic predecessors, enhancing structural integrity. However, integrating antennas posed challenges due to the conductive material; engineers addressed signal interference by embedding them under non-metallic top and bottom caps, avoiding visible side lines while maintaining reception.

The rear camera is a 16 MP sensor with phase detection autofocus and f/2.0 aperture, while the front camera is 5 MP. These specifications provide a balance of efficiency and capability, with the device priced at approximately $150 for the base 2 GB/16 GB model in markets like India.[3][13][20] In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 650 delivers smooth multitasking and app switching, with the Adreno 510 GPU enabling playable frame rates in graphics-intensive games such as Hitman: Sniper and Total War Battles: Kingdom, though minor stutters may occur in fast-paced titles. The chipset's integrated modem enhances 4G LTE compatibility across more global bands, supporting dual-SIM 4G usage effectively in regions like Europe and India. Additionally, the GPU handles 1080p video playback fluidly, contributing to reliable multimedia experiences.[42][59] The device launched with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop skinned under MIUI 7, later updated to MIUI 8 in 2016. It received an upgrade to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with MIUI 9 in January 2018 and MIUI 10 Global Stable (version 10.1.1.0) later that year, marking the final major update, as no Android 7.0 Nougat support was provided.[60][3]

Special Edition

The Special Edition of the Redmi Note 3, codenamed "kate", represents a limited variant based on the Snapdragon 650 chipset, offering enhanced connectivity for international markets. Launched in June 2016, it addressed key user concerns regarding network performance in the standard Snapdragon model by incorporating an upgraded modem supporting more LTE bands for better global compatibility, with Cat 4 LTE speeds up to 150 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload.[22] This edition retained the core hardware profile of the Snapdragon variant, including RAM and storage options of 2 GB/16 GB or 3 GB/32 GB, while introducing a modified housing measuring 152 x 76 x 8.7 mm (compared to 150 x 76 x 8.65 mm for the standard) with enhanced antenna design to improve signal reception and support additional bands such as LTE Band 20. An enhanced antenna design further optimized radio frequency performance, making it suitable for premium mid-range users seeking reliable connectivity in urban environments. Priced at approximately $170, the model was produced in limited quantities to target buyers prioritizing network stability over broader availability.[61][62]

Reception

Reviews

The Redmi Note 3 garnered widespread acclaim from professional reviewers for its outstanding value proposition in the budget smartphone category, often highlighted as a benchmark for affordable devices with premium features. Publications such as XDA Developers dubbed it the "King of the Low End" due to its metal unibody construction that imparted a high-end feel despite its sub-$200 price tag, along with reliable performance from the Snapdragon 650 processor.[56] TechRadar awarded it 3.8 out of 5 stars, praising the 5.5-inch Full HD display for its sharpness and brightness, as well as the rear fingerprint sensor for its swift and accurate operation.[6] The device's battery endurance stood out prominently, with the 4,000 mAh unit delivering up to two days of mixed usage, far surpassing many contemporaries in its class.[56] Critics noted several shortcomings, particularly the camera's mediocre low-light performance, where images suffered from noise and detail loss, with the MediaTek variant faring worse overall compared to the Snapdragon model.[56] The absence of fast charging was another common grievance, as the standard 5V/2A adapter required over 2.5 hours for a full charge.[56] Additionally, the MIUI software interface drew criticism for its bloatware and aggressive app management, which could hinder multitasking on lower RAM configurations.[56] User feedback echoed professional sentiments, with the phone earning a 4.3 out of 5 rating from over 142,000 reviews on Flipkart, where buyers frequently lauded its battery life, sturdy build, and overall affordability.[63] Common praises included the vibrant display and smooth daily operation, while some users reported dissatisfaction with the camera's output in dim conditions and occasional heating on the MediaTek version. In 2016, outlets like The Next Web proclaimed it the best $150 Android phone available, and the Indian Express included it among the top mid-range devices of the year.[42][64]

Sales figures

The Redmi Note 3 achieved significant commercial success shortly after its launch, particularly in India where it became a bestseller through Xiaomi's flash sale model. In the first 60 days of availability starting March 2016, Xiaomi sold over 600,000 units in India, marking the company's fastest-selling product at the time.[25] By August 2016, cumulative sales in India reached 1.75 million units, making it the highest-shipped smartphone in the country's online market for the April-June quarter with 880,000 units.[65][66] By September 2016, sales in India exceeded 2.3 million units, equivalent to one device sold every seven seconds since launch.[67] This performance propelled Xiaomi to cross $1 billion in revenue in India for 2016, with the Redmi Note 3 contributing substantially to the mid-range segment's growth and establishing the brand's strong foothold in the market.[68] According to IDC data, it was the highest-shipped smartphone overall in India during this period, while Antutu rankings confirmed it as the top-selling device nationwide for 2016.[69][70] The device's popularity extended beyond India, performing strongly in its home market of China where it launched first in December 2015, and in Southeast Asia through dedicated variants. Globally, the Redmi Note 3 emerged as a budget bestseller, reinforcing Xiaomi's reputation for affordable yet feature-rich mid-range devices.[71] In terms of legacy, the Redmi Note 3 marked a pivotal milestone for the series by surpassing predecessors in sales volume and introducing an all-metal unibody design that influenced subsequent budget smartphones.
