Jabal Hafeet[7] (Arabic: جَبَل حَفِيْت, romanizedJabal Ḥafīt, "Mount Hafeet"; variously transcribed Jabel or Jebal and Hafit – literally "empty mountain") is a mountain in the region of Tawam, on the border of the United Arab Emirates and Oman. It is often considered an outlier of the Hajar Mountains[1][8] in Eastern Arabia due to its proximity to the main range. To the north is the UAE city of Al Ain,[9] in the Eastern Region of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, and the adjacent Omani town of Al-Buraimi.[6]

Key Information

The sole mountain in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi,[8] and one of the highest mountains in the country,[10] it has given its name to a period in UAE history, the Hafit Period of the Bronze Age (3200 to 2600 BCE), because of the discovery of a cluster of important beehive tombs at its foothills.[11] As of 2017, the mountain is recognised as being part of a national park, and was incorporated into the Sheikh Zayed Network of Protected Areas in 2018.[12][13][14]

Climate

Jebel Hafeet has a hot desert climate (BWh) according to the Köppen climate classification. On average, 77 mm (3.0 in) of rain falls annually.[15] The temperature is relatively cool from October to March, usually remaining below 25 °C (77 °F). The average overall temperature is 27.1 °C (80.8 °F).

The Jabal Hafit mountain trends NNW–SSE over about 26 km (16 mi) and is 4–5 km (2.5–3.1 mi) wide. It protrudes 900 m (3,000 ft) above the surrounding plains. The mountain consists of shallow marine sedimentary rocks, which includes limestone, marl, and evaporites.[3] These layers contain many fossils which includes corals, foraminifera, and bryozoa. Fossils indicate that the sedimentary rocks exposed at the surface range from early Eocene to early Miocene in age, younging from the mountains core to its flanks.[16] This structure is an anticline, or more specifically an east-verging pericline. The west limb has a dip of around 30° and the east limb has overturned bedding at 70° in the central area.[3] This results in an inclined axial plane, creating an asymmetric fold. This is unexpected because the structure is folding towards the Hajar Mountains in the east. If the structure is related to the formation of the Hajar range, the anticline would typically be west verging. This indicates that the Jabal Hafit anticline formed due to a backthrust (antithetic fault), and is a fault-propagation fold.[17]

Within the eroded core of the anticline, at the Green Mubazzarah Park, are hot springs with temperatures of around 40 °C (104 °F).[18] There is no volcanic activity in the area, therefore the water is being heated geothermally. Meteoric water is percolating from the surface to about 2 km (1.2 mi) depth and then returning to the surface.[19] This provides evidence for faults below the anticline, as faulting fractures the rock and provides fluid pathways.

The limestone layers were deposited laterally within a basin, and then horizontal shortening folded the layers into an anticline. The timing of when this folding occurred is debated,[17][19][20] and the driving force is not fully understood. Some geologists relate the deformation of the Jabal Hafit anticline to the early Miocene Zagros Collision,[21] which is currently active and is caused by the Arabian Plate colliding with the Eurasian Plate. However, the Jabal Hafit Anticline is not actively deforming, and undeformed Miocene sedimentary rocks around the anticline indicate that no deformation has occurred recently. Sedimentary evidence indicates that the Hafit structure developed during the late Oligocene to early–middle Miocene.[19]

Caves

The mountain rises 1,100–1,400 m (3,600–4,600 ft),[1][2] and offers a view over Al-Ain. Jebel Hafeet was a well-known landmark throughout the area's history, and is a contemporary tourist attraction.[22] An extensive natural cave system winds through Jabal Hafeet. Jebel Hafeet is crossed by a system of caves, some of which have been explored to a depth of no more than 150 m (490 ft). In the caves there are well-preserved stalagmites and stalactites. Access to the caves is partly natural, while in other parts of the city of Al Ain, the entrance is blocked. At the foot of Jebel Hafeet lies a tourist attraction with hot springs and a lake.[23][24] To the northeast is the mountain's largest wadi,[25][26] Wadi Tarabat.[27][28]

Ridges

The mountain has ridges which stretch northwards to the inner part of Al-Ain City, two of which have been named and given prominence in literature. One is Al Naqfa Ridge or the Nagfa Ridge (Arabic: جَبَل ٱلنَّقْفَة, romanizedJabal An-Naqfah),[29][30][31] which stretches to Al Ain Oasis in the north, and has a historical fort of the same name nearby.[8][32] The other is the "Western Ridge" or "West Ridge".[8][33][34]

Hafeet Mountain Road

The Jebel Hafeet Mountain Road,[23] built in 1980, extends for 11.7 km (7.3 mi) up the mountain, rising 1,200 m (3,900 ft). With 60 turns and three lanes (two climbing and one descending), the road was called the greatest driving road in the world by Edmunds.com.[35] The road scales the mountain and ends at a parking lot with a hotel and a palace belonging to the country's rulers. The road was built by Strabag International of Cologne, Germany.[citation needed]

Hafeet Mountain Road is a challenge for cyclists who frequently use the route to train. The Jabal Hafeet Mercure Challenge is an annual road cycling competition taking place in January. National and international riders take part in climbing the 8% average ascent of the mountain.[36] In 2015 it hosted the arrival of the third stage of first edition of Abu Dhabi Tour, won by Colombian Esteban Chaves. Since 2019, the road to the top of Jebel Hafeet is a fixed location of the UAE Tour.[37] For the 2020 edition the mountain was visited twice. The first ascent was won by eventual Tour winner Adam Yates, and during stage 5, which wound up being the final stage of the race due to concerns about the coronavirus, Team UAE's promising young rider Tadej Pogačar won the stage.[citation needed]

The mountain is part of a national or desert park, which can be called "Jebel Hafeet National Park",[12][13][14] "Jebel Hafit Desert Park"[8][38] or "Mezyad Desert Park".[39][40] It includes the Hafit Graves, Mezyad Fort, and related oases.[8] Its aim was to preserve and restore the fauna, flora, natural environment, and geology of the place, but at the same time, to attract tourists so that they can learn about the area.[39]

Flora and fauna

The mountain is home to endangered species of flora and fauna,[41][42] particularly at Wadi Tarabat.[25][26][27][28] 170 plant species have been documented from Jebel Hafeet and this accounts for over 40 per cent of the total plant species recorded in the emirate.[43]

On the mountain has been observed the yellow bloom of Acridocarpus orientalis.[27] Numerous other plants have been seen around caves in the mountain. The mountain’s largest wadi, Wadi Tarabat, is alone home to around 95 species of plants, including Christ’s thorn, Ziziphus spina-christi, which was historically used for building, food and herbal medicine.[43]

The caves of Jebel Hafeet are a natural habitat for a wide range of animals,[4][5] including bats, foxes, snakes, rodents, and hyraxes. The lizard Acanthodactylus opheodurus, which until 1982 was considered extinct in the UAE, has been observed in the area. Among the birds, there is the greatest biodiversity of the whole country: a study counted 119 species of birds. Finally, they have been cataloged, with about 200 different insects, and 23 species of butterflies. Recently, seven species of lacewing insects were discovered here. They were previously thought not to have been in this country, but in Saudi Arabia.[42] The Arabian tahr is also found here.[41][44][45]

In 1949, an Arabian leopard was spotted here by Wilfred Thesiger. In 1976, one was shot and wounded, as reported by Hellyer, who claimed another sighting in 1993. The leopard is now possibly extinct in the country's wilderness. In addition, rock hyrax were recently introduced here, and could serve as prey for the leopard, if the latter had to be re-introduced.[4][5]

In February 2019, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi recorded the sighting of an Arabian caracal by camera trap in Jebel Hafeet National Park, the first such sighting in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi since 1984.[12][13][14] In March, a Blanford's fox was observed using the same technique, after an absence of about 17 years.[46][47]

Archeological findings

At the foothills of the mountain, near Mezyad,[48] 500 beehive tombs were excavated that dated to an area named after the mountain, the Hafit period of the early Bronze Age, between 3200 and 2600 BC.[11] These tombs were firstly discovered in 1950. Later excavations by Danish archaeologists in 1959 found evidence for ceramic vessels and copper artifacts in these tombs. While the graves on the north side have been partially destroyed by construction projects, the southern tombs are preserved. Some of the tombs contain skeletons, some of which are adorned with bronze objects and pearls. Other objects found in the tombs include ceramics from Mesopotamia, and other artifacts from ancient Iran and the Indus Valley of present-day India and Pakistan,[9] to trading relationships in antiquity. Because of its exceptional archaeological and historical value, in 1993, the "Desert Park and the tombs" (which includes the Jebel Hafeet) was inscribed on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites as the "Cultural Sites of Al Ain: Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and Oases Areas".[49] Also nearby is the historic Mezyad Fort.[8][50]

Tourism

Jebel Hafeet is a popular tourist center with a broad view over the whole area from the summit. The touristic attraction at the foot of the mountain is Green Mubazzarah[23] (Arabic: ٱلْمُبَزَّرَة ٱلْخَضْرَاء, romanizedAl-Mubazzarah Al-Khaḍrāʿ),[51][52] a well-developed tourist attraction featuring a geyser, a children's play park and a number of chalets for hire, several hot-water springs gushing forth in little streams and forming a lake, and swimming pools and Jacuzzis scattered all over the area.[24]

There is also a small dam, constructed in 1955 and restored in 2005, one of the earliest development projects instituted by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who was the governor of Al-Ain before becoming the Ruler of Abu Dhabi and President of the UAE. The Mubazzara Dam is freely accessible to the public.[53]

On top of the mountain, there is a military communications outpost and a hotel operated by French hospitality company Mercure,[54] as well as a palace.

Location and extent

Jebel Hafeet is situated at approximately 24°03′31″N 55°46′39″E, marking its central position within the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.[8] This mountain ridge straddles the international border between the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman, lying immediately south of the city of Al Ain in the UAE and adjacent to Al-Buraimi in Oman.[9] As the westernmost outlier of the broader Hajar Mountains range that spans the UAE and Oman, Jebel Hafeet serves as the only prominent mountain formation in the Abu Dhabi Emirate.[9] The ridge trends in a north-south direction for approximately 17 km and measures 4-5 km in east-west width, forming an isolated massif amid the surrounding desert terrain.[4][10] The mountain's location places it in close proximity to key regional features, including the historic Al Ain Oasis to the north and the Mezyad Desert Park at its southern base near the Oman border.[11] It rises approximately 900 m above the surrounding plains, creating a stark topographic contrast in the area.

Topography and orography

Jebel Hafeet forms an isolated limestone massif rising abruptly from the surrounding desert plains, characterized by steep escarpments that create a dramatic vertical profile. The mountain extends approximately 17 km in length, functioning as a prominent foreland ridge in the regional landscape.[4] Its overall structure features rugged, weathered surfaces shaped by long-term erosion, with the western flank exhibiting gentler slopes of about 30 degrees, while the eastern side presents much steeper inclines exceeding 70 degrees.[12] The highest elevation of Jebel Hafeet reaches 1,249 meters above sea level, marking it as the tallest peak in Abu Dhabi emirate, though some measurements cite 1,240 meters due to variations in summit identification.[1] The mountain's topographic prominence measures approximately 900 meters above the adjacent plains, emphasizing its isolation and dominance over the low-lying terrain.[13] Key surface features include prominent ridges that extend from the main massif. Geology

Geological history

Jebel Hafeet formed as an asymmetrical anticline structure primarily during the late Oligocene to early-middle Miocene, with initial deformation linked to Cenozoic tectonic processes spanning the Eocene to Miocene epochs (approximately 56 to 5 million years ago).[17] The anticline's development involved décollement folding followed by trishear fault-propagation folding, preserving a complete sequence of Eocene to Miocene sedimentary rocks that reflect progressive uplift and shortening.[17] This structural evolution occurred along the northeastern margin of the Arabian Plate, where compressional forces initiated folding after the deposition of Oligocene limestones.[18] The mountain's rock layers consist predominantly of shallow marine sedimentary deposits, including limestone, dolomitic limestone, marl, and evaporites from formations such as the Eocene Dammam and underlying Rus.[19] The Dammam Formation, which dominates the exposed strata, features fossiliferous nummulitic limestones interbedded with marls, while the Rus Formation contributes evaporitic carbonates that facilitated detachment during folding.[19] These lithologies indicate deposition in a shallow shelf environment during the Eocene, transitioning to more restricted conditions with evaporite accumulation.[20] Tectonically, Jebel Hafeet lies within the frontal fold-and-thrust belt of the northern Oman Mountains, influenced by the ongoing Arabia-Eurasia plate collision that drove the Zagros orogeny.[21] The convergence, active since the late Eocene closure of the Neotethys Ocean, propagated deformation into the Arabian foreland, forming thrust-related anticlines like Jebel Hafeet through transpressional faulting at depth.[22] This regional compression resulted in the anticline's steep western limb and gentler eastern flank, with the structure acting as a key boundary in the Oman-Emirates thrust belt.[18] The fossil record in these rocks is rich, particularly in Eocene layers, featuring diverse invertebrates such as larger benthic foraminifera (e.g., Nummulites, Discocyclina, Alveolina), corals, and other marine microfossils that indicate a tropical, shallow-water depositional setting.[19] These assemblages, including newly described arenaceous foraminiferal species from the Middle-Upper Eocene, provide biostratigraphic markers for dating the Dammam Formation and highlight paleoenvironmental shifts during platform evolution.[23] More recent geological activity has involved minor faulting and jointing under brittle conditions, superimposed on the main anticlinal folds, along with ongoing erosion that has sculpted the current escarpment profile.[24] This post-Eocene deformation, tied to continued Zagros collision, includes surface faults and fractures that cut through Lower Eocene sediments, while differential erosion has exposed karst features in the limestones.[22]

Karst features and caves

Jebel Hafeet's karst landscape arises from the dissolution of its predominantly Eocene to Miocene limestone by acidic rainwater, resulting in characteristic erosional features across the anticlinal structure.[13] The topography displays sparse karst landforms, including deep collapse sinkholes, some of which contain unexplored caves at their bases and are associated with contemporary karst processes.[13] The mountain features a natural cave system that has been partially explored, with the primary example being Qasir Hafeet Cave near the summit. This cave reaches a depth of 96 meters and includes over 450 meters of mapped shafts, passages, and chambers formed along vertical joints.[13][25] Dating to between 5 and 16 million years old, the caves are now largely dry, reflecting a phreatic or possible hydrothermal speleogenesis in confined limestone layers previously overlain by clay-marl sequences.[13] Foot caves at the base are partially developed in cemented alluvial sediments.[13] In the eroded core of the anticline at Green Mubazzarah, thermal springs emerge along fault zones, with water temperatures of 40–45°C measured in nearby wells at depths of 40–55 meters.[26][27] These springs, characterized as Na-Cl type waters, result from the circulation of groundwater originating from the Oman Mountains, heated through deep fault-related pathways before surfacing.[28][26] The prominent ridges of Jebel Hafeet serve as karst remnants, showcasing the eroded margins of the anticline where differential dissolution has exposed layered limestone strata over 900 meters of relief above the surrounding plains.[13]

Climate and ecology

Climate

Jebel Hafeet features a hot desert climate classified as BWh under the Köppen-Geiger system, characterized by extreme aridity and high temperatures throughout much of the year.[9] The annual average temperature stands at 27.1 °C, with summer daytime highs frequently exceeding 45 °C and nighttime lows occasionally dipping to 10 °C.[29] At higher elevations, conditions are milder, with average temperatures remaining below 25 °C from October through March, providing a noticeable respite from the lowland heat.[30] Precipitation is scarce, averaging 77 mm annually and predominantly occurring during the winter months of December to February, when occasional convective storms deliver the bulk of the yearly total.[29] The mountain's topography influences local weather patterns through orographic lift, where moist air rising over windward slopes condenses to produce slightly elevated rainfall compared to adjacent plains.[31] In the wadis, fog and dew formation contributes supplementary moisture during cooler periods, enhancing the limited hydrological input in this hyper-arid environment.[32] Summers are intensely dry, often punctuated by haboobs—intense dust storms driven by downdrafts from distant thunderstorms that sweep across the surrounding desert lowlands.[33] Winters, by contrast, are mild with comfortable daytime warmth and minimal precipitation beyond sporadic events. This stark seasonal contrast shapes the mountain's ecosystem, supporting resilient flora adapted to prolonged drought and brief wet intervals.[29]

Flora and fauna

Jebel Hafeet's flora is characterized by altitudinal zonation, with desert shrubs dominating the lower slopes and transitioning to montane herbs and associations at higher elevations, reflecting adaptations to the arid climate. Approximately 170 plant species have been documented across the mountain, accounting for over 40% of the total flora recorded in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.[34] Key species include acacias such as Acacia tortilis in parkland formations and the resilient ghaf tree (Prosopis cineraria), which sustains local ecosystems through its deep roots and shade provision. Rare and regionally significant plants, such as Acridocarpus orientalis—with one of its few UAE populations here—and Caralluma arabica, highlight the mountain's botanical uniqueness.[35][36] The mountain supports a notable faunal assemblage, including 140 bird species that utilize its cliffs and wadis as habitats and migration stopovers. Prominent examples are the endangered Egyptian vulture (Neophron percnopterus), which maintains a key UAE concentration on Jebel Hafeet, and Hume's wheatear (Oenanthe alboniger), a resident of the barren rocky terrains. Mammals number around 20 species, featuring the endangered Arabian tahr (Arabitragus jayakari)—with a local population of about 15 individuals subject to ongoing reintroduction and tagging efforts by the Environment AgencyAbu Dhabi—and the mountain gazelle (Gazella gazella cora). The Arabian leopard (Panthera pardus nimr) may be locally extinct, with the last confirmed sighting in 1949, while reptiles such as the Sinai agama (Pseudotrapelus sinaitus) thrive on the sun-warmed rocks as insectivores and climbers.[37][34][38][39][40] Biodiversity hotspots on Jebel Hafeet, particularly the wadis like Wadi Tarabat—which hosts nearly 95 plant species—and exposed ridges, foster higher species diversity by trapping moisture and providing microhabitats. These areas face threats from overgrazing by livestock, which degrades vegetation, and invasive species that outcompete natives, exacerbating habitat fragmentation in this isolated environment. The mountain's topographic isolation enhances its role in regional endemism, serving as a refuge for specialized species amid broader arid constraints.[34][36][41]

Archaeology and history

Prehistoric sites and Hafit period

The Hafit period, dating from approximately 3200 to 2600 BCE, represents the early Bronze Age in the United Arab Emirates and Oman, named after the distinctive beehive-shaped tombs first identified at the base of Jebel Hafeet. This era marks the initial phase of more organized human activity in the region, with over 500 dry-stone tombs constructed along the mountain's foothills, particularly in clustered necropolises such as Mezyad. These structures, built using local limestone without mortar, typically feature circular plans with diameters of 4 to 7 meters and heights ranging from 2 to 5 meters, enclosing single burial chambers accessed via a low entrance. The tombs' design reflects a communal investment in funerary practices, often arranged in rows or groups on ridges for visibility and defense against erosion or looting.[42][43] Excavations of these tombs began with surveys in the mid-20th century, followed by systematic digs led by Danish archaeologists from 1959 to 1971 under expeditions organized by the Moesgaard Museum. These efforts uncovered human remains, often secondary burials, alongside grave goods that provide insight into daily life and economy. Key artifacts include handmade pottery vessels with simple incised decorations, copper awls and fishhooks indicating early metallurgy, and shell or stone beads used for personal adornment. The presence of imported ceramics and metal objects points to extensive trade networks connecting the Hafit communities to Mesopotamia (modern Iraq), Iran, and the Indus Valley civilization, facilitating the exchange of goods like copper and luxury items across maritime and overland routes.[44][43] The Hafit period at Jebel Hafeet signifies the earliest evidence of a shift toward sedentary pastoralism in southeastern Arabia, where communities combined herding of goats and sheep with limited agriculture near wadis, supported by wells and seasonal wadis. This transition laid the foundation for the UAE's first complex societies, characterized by social differentiation evident in tomb construction and burial rites, and environmental adaptation in a arid landscape. The site's tombs, now part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain, underscore the period's role in regional cultural development.[45][46][47]

Later historical significance

Following the Hafit period, the Iron Age (c. 1300–600 BCE) and preceding Wadi Suq period (c. 2600–1300 BCE) saw continued human engagement with Jebel Hafeet, marked by the reuse of earlier beehive tombs for burials, indicating persistent cultural practices in the region. Nearby falaj irrigation systems, innovative underground aqueducts developed during the Iron Age, facilitated agricultural expansion and settlement growth around the mountain's base, supporting denser populations in the Al Ain oasis area.[48][47] During the Islamic era, Jebel Hafeet served as a prominent landmark along ancient caravan routes connecting Oman to the Persian Gulf and broader Mesopotamia, with Al Ain positioned at key crossroads for trade in goods like dates, copper, and incense. Archaeological evidence from early Islamic sites in Al Ain underscores the mountain's role in facilitating overland commerce and cultural exchange within the expanding Muslim world.[47][49] In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the mountain's slopes and surrounding plains were primarily used as grazing lands by Bedouin tribes, who established seasonal settlements such as the village of Mezyad for pastoral activities amid the arid landscape.[48][14] The name "Jebel Hafeet" originates from the ancient Hafit culture associated with the prehistoric tombs at its base, evolving in local Arabic to mean "empty mountain," reflecting its stark, uninhabited appearance despite historical human activity. Following the formation of the United Arab Emirates in 1971, Jebel Hafeet became fully integrated into the federation as part of Abu Dhabi's territory, marking a shift from peripheral tribal use to national conservation and development focus.[50][51][5]

Protected status

Jabal Hafeet National Park

Jabal Hafeet National Park was established in 2017 through Amiri Decree 21, designating the mountain and its surrounding areas as a protected reserve to safeguard its unique ecological and geological features. In 2018, it was formally integrated into the Sheikh Zayed Network of Protected Areas, enhancing its status within Abu Dhabi's broader conservation framework. This designation underscores the mountain's role as an isolated outlier of the Hajar range, preserving its limestone formations and diverse microhabitats from urban encroachment and environmental degradation.[7][37] The park is administered by the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD), which oversees its boundaries encompassing the core mountainous terrain and adjacent buffer zones to maintain ecological integrity. Key objectives focus on biodiversity conservation through habitat protection, fostering sustainable ecotourism that minimizes human impact, and preserving cultural elements intertwined with the landscape. EAD implements strict regulations, including restricted access to fragile zones to prevent soil erosion and vegetation loss, robust anti-poaching patrols targeting threats to endemic species, and ongoing habitat restoration initiatives such as the 2020 project rehabilitating degraded slopes with native plants.[6][52][53] Recent management efforts have emphasized expanded monitoring since 2020, incorporating camera traps and field surveys to assess climate resilience amid rising temperatures and altered precipitation patterns. These activities support adaptive strategies like vegetation reinforcement to combat desertification. As of November 2025, ongoing initiatives continue to formalize and expand the park's national status.[54][52]

UNESCO World Heritage designation

The Cultural Sites of Al Ain (Hafit, Hili, Bidaa Bint Saud and Oases Areas) were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2011, marking the United Arab Emirates' inaugural entry on the list.[47] This serial property encompasses archaeological and cultural elements spanning prehistoric to Iron Age periods, highlighting human adaptation in a desert oasis setting.[55] The site satisfies UNESCO criteria (iii), (iv), and (v): it bears exceptional testimony to a cultural tradition through its prehistoric burial and settlement practices (iii); it serves as an outstanding example of early agricultural settlements and hydraulic engineering in arid regions (iv); and it illustrates a traditional human settlement and land-use pattern via the sustainable aflaj irrigation system (v).[55] These criteria underscore the site's role in documenting the transition from nomadic to sedentary lifestyles over millennia.[47] Within the serial nomination, the Jebel Hafeet Desert Park and its associated Bronze Age tombs—dating to the Hafit period (c. 3200–2500 BCE)—represent a critical component, contributing to the property's overall integrity and authenticity.[47] The total inscribed area covers 4,945 hectares, integrating these elements with oases and other archaeological assemblages to preserve their interrelationships.[47] The designation emphasizes over 5,000 years of oasis-based agriculture and burial traditions, showcasing innovative water management and cultural continuity in a challenging arid environment.[47] These features exemplify sustainable human-environment interactions that remain relevant to global heritage conservation.[55] Management involves joint oversight by UNESCO and the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi), which implements the Abu Dhabi Cultural Heritage Management Strategy to ensure protection, research, and public access.[47] Periodic reporting and conservation initiatives, including major works completed between 2017 and 2019, support ongoing monitoring of the site's state.

Infrastructure and access

Hafeet Mountain Road

The Hafeet Mountain Road, completed in 1980 by the German firm Strabag International on behalf of the UAE government, spans 11.7 kilometers with 60 hairpin turns and achieves a vertical ascent of 1,200 meters from the base near Al Ain to the summit plateau.[56][57] This engineering feat was designed to provide reliable access to the mountain's higher elevations, facilitating connectivity between the urban areas of Al Ain and the remote summit regions for both practical and recreational purposes.[58] The road features a paved, three-lane configuration—two lanes ascending and one descending—with gradients reaching up to 10% in sections, enabling smooth navigation despite the steep terrain.[59] Scenic overlooks are integrated at key points, allowing drivers and cyclists to pause and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding desert and Hajar Mountains.[56] These design elements emphasize safety and accessibility, making the route suitable for standard vehicles while accommodating the challenging topography carved into limestone slopes.[59] As the primary route to the mountain's upper areas, the road serves locals for daily travel and tourists seeking elevated viewpoints, with its winding path enhancing the journey's appeal.[1] It has become a favored venue for cycling events, including a summit finish stage in the UAE Tour since 2019 and the annual Jabal Hafeet Mercure Challenge held each January, drawing national and international participants to test their endurance on the ascent.[60] Maintenance efforts have focused on enhancing safety, with a Dh35 million renovation project launched in 2018 by Al Ain Municipality to repair the road surface, concrete support walls, and rainwater drainage systems while adding protective barriers.[57] Additional upgrades in the 2000s and 2010s, including rock slope stabilization, guardrail reinforcements, and traffic safety assessments, addressed erosion risks and increasing usage from vehicles and cyclists.[61][62]

Hot springs and other facilities

The Green Mubazzarah Hot Springs, located at the foothills of Jebel Hafeet, feature natural thermal waters emerging from deep underground sources, with temperatures ranging between 40°C and 45°C. These springs have been developed since the late 20th century into a public park with separate mineral pools for men and women, spas, and numerous rental chalets for overnight stays, creating a desert oasis amid manicured lawns and a man-made lake.[63] The Mubazzarah Dam, situated in the same valley, was originally constructed in 1955 as one of the earliest modern water infrastructure projects in the region, designed primarily for flood control and groundwater recharge to support local water storage. It underwent restoration in 2005 by the Department of Antiquities and Tourism in Al Ain, preserving its historical significance while enhancing its functionality.[64][65] Other accommodations include the Oryx Grand Jebel Hafeet (formerly Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet), a mountaintop resort built in 2002 with 124 rooms and suites, offering panoramic views and amenities such as multiple swimming pools and dining options. Along the mountain ridges, basic rest areas and designated viewpoints provide simple facilities for pauses, including shaded benches and interpretive signage.[66][67][68] Supporting utilities in the area encompass irrigation pipelines constructed as part of recent projects to channel spring water for nearby agricultural use, aiding date palm cultivation and other farming activities in the arid foothills.[69]

Tourism and recreation

Visitor attractions

Jebel Hafeet's summit, reaching an elevation of 1,249 meters, offers visitors breathtaking panoramic vistas encompassing the lush oases and gardens of Al Ain city, the expansive desert plains, and glimpses of the Oman border to the east.[1] These views are particularly striking at sunrise and sunset, when the rugged limestone peaks contrast sharply with the surrounding arid landscape, providing a serene vantage point for photography and contemplation.[1] Access to the summit is facilitated by the winding Hafeet Mountain Road, allowing visitors to drive directly to a viewing area with parking and a nearby café.[3] At the mountain's base in the Mezyad area, archaeological trails lead to clusters of ancient beehive tombs, over 500 in number and dating back more than 5,000 years to the early Bronze Age.[70] These dome-shaped structures, constructed from unhewn stones, form part of a UNESCO-recognized necropolis that reveals early trade connections with Mesopotamia through unearthed pottery and metal artifacts.[70] Interpretive paths within the Jebel Hafeet Desert Park guide visitors along these sites, offering educational signage and guided hikes that highlight the prehistoric significance without disturbing the protected remains.[70] The mountain's natural features include scattered cave entrances embedded in the limestone ridges, though access is limited to preserve the delicate ecosystems and geological formations within.[3] These ridges provide opportunities for short hikes amid jagged outcrops, while at the base, the Green Mubazzarah Park features natural hot springs that feed into therapeutic pools surrounded by verdant lawns, ideal for relaxation amid the desert setting.[71] Marine fossils from the ancient Tethys Sea, dating to the Eocene period approximately 50 million years ago, are exposed along the lower slopes, adding a layer of paleontological interest to the terrain.[18] The Jebel Hafeet Desert Park, spanning a 9-kilometer stretch at the mountain's foot, showcases fossil exposures and wadi channels that invite exploration of the area's geological history through marked trails.[72] Complementing these attractions, the Oryx Grand Jebel Hafeet (formerly Mercure Grand Jebel Hafeet) at the summit provides resort amenities such as a full-service spa with saunas and treatments, as well as dining options including restaurants offering international cuisine with expansive views of the landscape.[73]

Events and activities

Jebel Hafeet hosts several organized cycling events that attract participants from around the region. Since 2019, the mountain has served as the finale for a professional stage of the UAE Tour, a prestigious UCI WorldTour race where elite riders tackle the steep gradients, with notable victories by athletes like Tadej Pogačar in multiple editions, including 2025.[74] Hiking and outdoor pursuits are popular, with marked trails suitable for various skill levels, including paths for birdwatching that allow observation of species such as Egyptian vultures and sand partridges in the mountain's diverse habitats.[3][75] Rock climbing opportunities exist on the rugged slopes, particularly for experienced climbers seeking challenging routes. In the adjacent Jebel Hafeet Desert Park, visitors can engage in quad biking and camel rides across the desert terrain, enhanced by campsite facilities that offer luxury glamping options like air-conditioned bubble tents for overnight stays.[76][72][77] Ecotourism programs emphasize guided experiences, such as tours to the ancient beehive tombs and nearby hot springs at Green Mubazzarah, providing educational insights into the area's cultural and natural features while minimizing environmental impact.[78] Stargazing sessions benefit from the mountain's low light pollution, offering clear night skies for viewing constellations and the Milky Way, often organized through the desert park.[79] In 2025, new running challenges emerged, including the Nike AREA 72 event where 30 elite runners summited Jebel Hafeet in a high-profile ascent, and the Hafeet Challenge organized by the Abu Dhabi Sports Council with distances of 1 km, 3 km, and 5 km.[80][81] Habitat restoration efforts include volunteer programs like the Jebel Hafeet Hiking Cleanup and Water Fun Day on November 23, 2025, aimed at preserving the ecosystem through community participation.[82] Safety guidelines for activities include wearing appropriate clothing and carrying sufficient water, with no permits required for most pursuits. Extreme sports such as rock climbing or quad biking may necessitate guided operators for risk management. The mountain experiences seasonal closures or advisories during adverse weather, including winter rains from October to April and haboobs (sandstorms) that reduce visibility and pose hazards.[3][83]
