Saj' (Arabic: سجع, romanizedsajʿ) is a form of rhymed prose defined by its relationship to and use of end-rhyme, meter, and parallelism.[1] There are two types of parallelism in saj': iʿtidāl (rhythmical parallelism, meaning "balance") and muwāzana (qualitative metrical parallelism).[2]

Saj' was the earliest artistic speech in Arabic.[3][4] It could be found in pre-Islamic Arabia among the kuhhān (the pre-Islamic soothsayers)[5] and in Abyssinia for ecclesiastical poetry and folk songs.[6] One famous composer of saj' was said to have been the bishop of Najran, Quss Ibn Sa'ida al-Iyadi.[7]

Saj' continued in Islamic-era Arabic literature and speech. The stylistic similarities between saj' and the Quran have long been a matter of discussion[8][9] especially between saj' and the style of the earliest surahs.[10] In Umayyad times, saj' was discredited as an artistic style for resembling the speech of soothsayers. This, however, did not stop people from composing saj'. Saj' in the style of pre-Islamic Arabia was still being written in Abbasid times, and was being invoked in the same situations, like in speeches before battle, the cursing of one's killers before their own death, derision, and argument. Saj' was attributed to Muhammad's companions, like Abu Bakr, and prominent figures in early Islamic history, like Ibn al-Zubayr and Al-Hajjaj. After the image of saj' had been rehabilitated, in large part thanks to the effort of Al-Jahiz, it became a major form of Arabic literary prose and was used in genres like the maqāma. To this day, saj' continues to be used by peasants and bedouin.[11] Saj' appears in many famous works, including the One Thousand and One Nights.[12] It also became popular in Persian literature, like in the Golestān of Saadi. Saj' was used by Quran exegetes[13] and in texts that attempt to imitate the style of the Quran.[14]

Definition and terminology

In its simplest form, sajʿ consists of groups of consecutive cola sharing a common rhyme and meter.

Stewart has also offered a more elaborate definition.[16]

Sajʿ, though generally considered a sub-category of prose (nathr), is a type of composition distinct from both free prose (nathr mursal) and syllabic verse (naẓm). It consists of rhyming phrases termed sajaʿāt (sing sajʿah). The rules governing the rhyme in sajʿ are slightly different from those governing the rhyme in the qaṣīdah, the most noticeable difference being that the rhyme-words in sajʿ generally end in sukūn. Sajʿ conforms to an accentual meter: each sajʿah tends to have the same number of word-accents as its partner sajʿahs. Therefore, the fundamental unit of sajʿ prosody is the word, lafẓah (pl. Iafaẓāt), and not the syllable or the tafʿīlah.

A single clause in saj' is called a sajʿah (pl. sajʿāt), or a faṣl (fuṣūl), or a fiqrah (pl. fiqar), or a qarīnah (pl. qarāʾin).[18]

Description

In English, saj' is commonly just translated as "rhymed prose", but as a form of writing, involved additional rules (rarely explicated by Arab critics) beyond being that prose which rhymes.[3] Traditionally, saj' has been defined as prose (nathr, manthūr) divided into phrases or clauses, each of which end in a common rhyme. The basis of saj' prosody is formed by the word rather than the syllable. As such, a mistaken or misunderstood way to describe saj' would be to try to describe it by a typical number of syllables per clause, as opposed to a typical number of words per clause.[19] Saj' has an accentual meter, meaning that its meter is defined by the number of stressed syllables per line.[20] The length of one clause or phrase (sajʿah) is equal or nearly equal in length to its partner clause, a property that has been called "balance" (iʿtidāl), and the number of words in a clause closely corresponds to its number of syntagmatic stresses (beats). Al-Bāqillānī defends the principle of balance in saj' against his interlocutors in the following manner:[21]

One part of what they call sajʿ has segment endings close to each other and segment cuts near each other. The other part is stretched so that its segments can be twice as long as the preceding ones and a segment can return to the original measure (wazn) only after plenty of words. Such sajʿ is not good and does not deserve to be praised. Someone might say: "When the balanced sajʿ has been stated, it ceases to be sajʿ at all. The speaker is not obliged to make all his speech sajʿ. He can say something in sajʿ, then turn away from it, and then return to it once more." Our reply is: "When one of the hemistichs of a bayt is different from the other, it leads to disorder and imbalance. And it is exactly the same, when one of the hemistichs (miṣrāʿ) of a sajʿ utterance becomes disorganized and dissimilar to the other, as it also leads to imbalance." We have shown that the Arabs blame any sajʿ which deviates from the balance of parts (ajzāʾ) so that some of its hemistichs are made of two words, and others of many words; they consider this weakness not eloquence.

Another common feature of saj' writing, also found in the Quran, is the presence of an introductory formula to the rest of the text that does not itself follow the ordinary structure of saj'. The sajʿāt proper begin after the introductory phrase.[22] In terms of length, Ibn al-Athir distinguished between short saj', where each clause has between two and ten words, with long saj', where each clause has eleven or more words, without any set limit. Ibn al-Athir produces an example containing nineteen words per clause (Quran 8:43–44). Zakariya al-Qazwini says that there are short, middle, and long forms of saj', but without specifying their boundaries, although unlike Ibn al-Athir, he does propose a limit to the number of words in long saj' (nineteen). For Al-Qalqashandi, since the Quran represented the height of literary elegance, he recommended against composing saj' any longer than nineteen words, which is the longest example of saj' found in the Quran. Medieval critics also typically preferred shorter versions of saj'.[23]

Many cases of saj' have been attributed to early, pre-Islamic figures, including Ta'abbata Sharran, Quss Ibn Sa'ida al-Iyadi, ʿAwf ibn Rabīʿah, Musaylima, and others.[24]

Another famous example is a piece attributed to Quss Ibn Sa'ida al-Iyadi:[27]

O People! Listen and retain! He who lives dies. He who dies is lost [forever]. Everything that could happen will happen. A dark night…a bright day…a sky that has zodiacal sign…stars that shine…seas [whose waters] roar…mountains firmly anchored...an earth spread out…rivers made to flow. Indeed, there are signs in the sky. There are lessons in the earth. What is the state of the people—going and never returning? Have they been satisfied, thus choosing to reside [there]? Or were they abandoned, [are they] sleeping? Quss swears an oath by God in which there is no sin: God has a religion that is more satisfactory to Him and better than the religion in which you believe. Indeed, you do evil deeds. In those that went before in eons past, are instances for us to take heed. When I looked at the watering holes of death, from which there is no returning—[When] I saw my people towards them going, young and old—The one who passed not coming back to me and not from those who remain, he who goes. I became convinced that I—without a doubt—will go where the people have gone.

Saj' in the Quran

The question of whether the Quran includes saj' has been a contentious issue among Arabic literary critics because of the worry that this would conflate the Quran with human composition.[28] Most believed the Quran contained a significant amount of saj'[29] or that it has several formal features of saj' but that it should not be described as such out of respect. Some theologians thought that some entire surahs were saj', including Surah 53 ("The Star"), Surah 54 ("The Moon"), and Surah 55 ("The Merciful"). In Arabic manuals describing saj', the vast majority of listed examples are from the Quran.[28]

While much of the Quran fits the criteria of saj', not all of it does. Saj' is mostly in Meccan surahs (as opposed to Medinan surahs), especially in earlier Meccan surahs.[30] Saj' has short verses, with each verse being one line (monopartite verses). This is true of Meccan surahs, but in Medinan surahs, verses are usually two lines (bipartite).[31] Another difference with Meccan surahs is that Medinan surahs have unbalanced lines, where one of the two lines in a pair have greatly differing lengths. Therefore, although 86% of the Quran has end-rhyme (series of lines where the final word rhymes), but a smaller proportion of it will be saj' as it will rhythmical parallelism. Likewise, some lines with rhythmical parallelism do not have end-rhyme.[32]

Ibn al-Athir defines four types of Quranic saj': equal saj' when both lines of a saj' unit are equal, unbalanced saj' when the second part of the saj' unit is longer than the first, short saj', and explicitly long saj'.[33] Devin J. Stewart has classified five main structural patterns of saj' units in the Quran.[34] A more recent preliminary analysis, attempting to identify all categories of Quranic saj', has identified fifteen.[35]

Perspectives in Islamic tradition

For Ibn Sinān al-Khafājī, the mode of Arabic in the Quran was consistent with existing custom and usage. On the other hand, those concerned with the doctrine of Quranic inimitability believed that saying saj' could be found in the Quran would muddy the distinction between the speech of God and that of humans. For example, Al-Baqillani (d. 1013 AD) in a work of his entitled Iʿjaz al-Qurʾān ("The Inimitability of the Quran"), went to great lengths to dispute that any of the Quran could be described as saj'. For some, the Quran was not saj' per se, although it was similar to saj'. Others argued that one should withhold from referring to the Quran as saj' merely out of respect for the Quran. Some proponents of the presence of saj' in the Quran solved this problem by creating a distinction between divine and human saj'.[36] For example, Abu Hilal al-Askari argued:[37]

Qur'anic discourse which assumes the form of sajʿ and izdiwāj is contrary to human discourse which assumes this form in its ability to convey the meaning, its clarity of expression, its sweetness and musicality.

In effect, al-Askari argued that unlike human saj', the Quran applies saj' and achieves the greatest possible elegance and meaning, even as it took on the literary limitations and formal constraints of saj'.[36] For Ibn al-Athir, most of the Quran was saj', and it was only the need to be concise that prevented all of it from being composed in saj'.[38]

Saj' in other religions

Qewle Diroze, one of the hymns of Yazidism, which enumerated and praised holy men, sacred places, and objects and rituals of the Yezidi tradition. It was often recited at Lalish on feast days, specifically during the observance of Berê Shibakê. The hymn read: "amîn amîn amîn, himeta Şemsedîn, Fexredîn, Sicadîn, Nasirdîn, Şêmise quweta dîn, Qedî Bilban qedîm, Siltan Şîxadî tanc ji ewilîn û axirîn, heq hemdullah ya rebil alemîn, ya Şîxadî elêkil selam", meaning "Amen, amen, amen, by the greatness of Shemsedin, Fekhredin, Sejadin and Nasirdin. Sheikh Shems is the strength of the religion. Qadib al-Ban is ancient. Sultan Sheikh Adi has the first and last crown. Truth, praise be to God, lord of both worlds. Oh Sheikh Adi, peace be upon you."[39]

Controversy over saj'

Prophetic hadith were commonly invoked over debates about the legitimacy of the use of saj'. The most famous example is the "hadith of the fetus". The context is that Muhammad is settling a dispute between two factions. One participant of the dispute suddenly begins using saj' as a rhetorical technique, and Muhammad condemns him for doing so.[36] While some cite this as evidence that Muhammad prohibited saj', others have argued that Muhammad's prohibition was limited to the use of saj' in bolstering an illegitimate point.[40] A number of other Prophetic hadith also figured in debates about if saj' could be used in prayer. Some cited examples of Muhammad's prohibition of saj' in prayer, while others cited examples of Muhammad using saj' during prayer.[41]

The Sajó (Slovak: Slaná) is a transboundary river in eastern Slovakia and northeastern Hungary. Etymology

Origins of the name Slaná

The name Slaná is the Slovak designation for the river, derived from the adjective slaná meaning "salty" in Slovak.[8] This form traces back to Proto-Slavic solnā, originating from the Indo-European root sal- denoting "salt," as evidenced by cognates in Latin (sal), German (Salz), and English (salt).[8] Slovak linguists consider the name pre-Hungarian in origin and interpret it as "salt river" rather than a description of the water's salinity.[9] The etymology is linked instead to the historical salt trade route that passed through the river valley, where salt was transported from Poland southward, influencing the naming of settlements along the course such as Nižná Slaná (Lower Salty) and Vyšná Slaná (Upper Salty).[9] This association with salt commerce reflects the economic importance of the valley in medieval trade networks, with related Slavic toponyms in the basin (such as Soľár) further underscoring the regional significance of salt resources and transport.[10] The Hungarian name Sajó represents a later adaptation possibly translating the same "salt river" concept.[10]

Geography

Source and upper course

The Slaná (Sajó) river originates on the northern slope of Stolica peak in the Stolické vrchy (Stolica Mountains), a subrange of the Slovak Ore Mountains.[13] The peak itself reaches 1,476 m above sea level, with the source area situated in mountainous terrain west of the village of Rejdová.[13] From its origin, the river descends northward down a forested slope with relatively steep inclines, characteristic of the high-gradient flow in the pramenné oblasti (source areas) of the basin.[13] This initial mountainous course promotes rapid surface runoff into the valleys during heavy precipitation or snowmelt events.[13] The river then enters the Slanská dolina valley, where its path begins to turn eastward.[13]

Course in Slovakia

The Slaná (Sajó) river flows for 110 km through eastern Slovakia, roughly half of its total length of 229 km.[14] It originates on the northern slopes of Stolica peak (1,476 m) in the Stolica Mountains, part of the Slovak Ore Mountains.[15][16] From its mountainous source, the river descends southward through narrow, forested valleys in the upper course, passing through the town of Rožňava, which lies in the Slaná basin in the Gemer region.[17][18] As it continues, the river transitions to wider valleys and lower terrain in its middle and lower sections within Slovakia, flowing through districts including Rožňava and approaching the border with Hungary after traversing more open lowland areas.[18]

The Sajó enters Hungarian territory near Sajópüspöki in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, flowing for approximately 124 km through this county before reaching its lower course.[19][20] The river passes through the city of Miskolc, where it occupies a broad valley transitioning to a flatter alluvial plain, with newer residential districts situated along the Sajó River plain.[21] In its lower course, the Sajó exhibits meandering characteristics, with ongoing free meander development in sections due to limited comprehensive embankments, a winding bed featuring islands and shoals, and a typical width of 20–80 meters.[19][20] The river carries gravel and silt sediments in this segment, with average depths of 0.8–1.2 meters (reaching up to 3.6 meters nearer the mouth) and a relatively low gradient after its confluence with the Hernád.[19]

Confluence with the Tisza

The Sajó River empties into the Tisza River near the industrial town of Tiszaújváros in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county, northern Hungary. Tiszaújváros is situated directly at the confluence of the Sajó and Tisza rivers, between the cities of Miskolc and Debrecen.[22] The mouth of the Sajó is located at approximately 47°56'N 21°07'E, close to Tiszaújváros.[23] In the broader Tisza River basin, the Sajó (also known as Slaná) is recognized as one of the right-bank tributaries joining the Middle Tisza, contributing water from the Carpathian and Mátra/Bükk mountain regions.[24] From the confluence, the combined flow proceeds as Sajó → Tisza → Danube → Black Sea, with the Tisza serving as a major tributary within the Danube River basin managed under international frameworks.[24]

Drainage basin

The drainage basin of the Sajó (Slaná) is transboundary, shared between Slovakia and Hungary, with a total catchment area of approximately 12,708–12,869 km². Slovakia holds the majority at about 66.9% (roughly 8,498 km²), while Hungary accounts for 33.1% (roughly 4,210 km²).[25][19] The basin is enlarged by contributions from major tributaries such as the Bodva and Hornád (Hernád).[25]

Major tributaries

The major tributaries of the Sajó (Slaná) are the Bodva (Bódva) and the Hornád (Hernád), with the latter being the largest and most significant. The Hornád, a transboundary river originating in the Slovak Ore Mountains, has a total length of 294 km (186 km in Slovakia and 108 km in Hungary) and a drainage basin of 5,440 km² (4,427 km² in Slovakia and 1,013 km² in Hungary). It flows southeastward through eastern Slovakia and northeastern Hungary before joining the Sajó near Miskolc.[26] The Bodva originates in the Slovak Ore Mountains and flows 110 km through eastern Slovakia (approximately 47 km) and northeastern Hungary before emptying into the Sajó near Edelény. Its drainage basin covers approximately 1,727 km², with a significant portion in Slovakia. Other notable tributaries include the Rimava, which joins the Slaná in southern Slovakia as a right-bank tributary, and the Szinva, a smaller stream that flows through Miskolc and contributes to the Sajó in the urban section of Hungary. Minor tributaries such as the Hnilec and Ida also feed into the system, primarily in the Slovak upper course.

Hydrology

Discharge and flow rates

The average discharge of the Sajó (Slaná) river increases significantly along its course, primarily due to inflows from major tributaries such as the Bodva and Hornád. In the upper course in Slovakia, the mean discharge at Rožňava is approximately 3.3 m³/s. In the Hungarian section, the mean discharge is approximately 24.5 m³/s at Kazincbarcika (upstream), 35.1 m³/s at Miskolc, and approximately 20.6 m³/s at Bánréve (further upstream but included for reference). Near the confluence with the Tisza River at Tiszaújváros, the average discharge is approximately 65.6 m³/s (with some sources indicating values around 60-65.6 m³/s). These values reflect measurements at key hydrological stations, with variations attributable to catchment contributions and seasonal inputs.

Water regime and seasonal variations

The Sajó (Slaná) exhibits a pluvial-nival water regime, typical of mid-altitude rivers in the Slovak Ore Mountains and the broader Carpathian Basin, where streamflow is driven by a combination of rainfall and seasonal snowmelt.[27] This regime reflects the river's mountainous origin in the Stolica Mountains, where winter snow accumulation and subsequent spring melting interact with year-round precipitation patterns to shape annual flow cycles.[28] Seasonal variations are pronounced, with the highest flows generally occurring in spring (February to May) due to snowmelt from the upper catchment combined with spring precipitation, often leading to peak runoff periods.[28] In contrast, low flows predominate in late summer and early autumn, when reduced precipitation, higher evapotranspiration rates, and depleted snow reserves result in diminished discharge.[28] These patterns align with those observed across many Tisza River tributaries, where the transitional position between mountainous headwaters and lowland plains produces distinct seasonal contrasts in hydrological behavior.[28] The river's regime is further influenced by its location in the Carpathian Basin, where climatic conditions produce a well-defined four-season cycle that amplifies the effects of elevation-dependent snowmelt and variable precipitation distribution.[28]

History

Medieval history

The Sajó river, known in early medieval times for its strategic position in the Carpathian Basin, served as a natural barrier and important transit point during the migration period (roughly 4th to 10th centuries). Archaeological findings at the Muhi crossing—located near the confluence with the Hernád river—have revealed wooden pile structures interpreted as remnants of a floodplain bridge or dock system. These oak piles, arranged in rectangular configurations and preserved in groundwater, were documented in the late 20th century and are associated with medieval crossings, though precise dating remains uncertain and recent analyses of similar structures indicate later medieval periods (e.g., 15th century). The site's significance highlights early patterns of human activity and transit along the river valley, where shifting channels and seasonal low water levels made crossings feasible for groups with livestock and carts. This crossing point would later feature prominently in 1241 events.[29][30]

Battle of the Sajó River

The Battle of the Sajó River, also known as the Battle of Mohi or Battle of Muhi, took place on 11 April 1241 near the village of Muhi in northeastern Hungary, on the banks of the Sajó River.[5][31][32] The engagement pitted the Mongol forces, commanded by Batu Khan and Subutai, against the Hungarian royal army led by King Béla IV.[5][31][33] The Hungarian army encamped on the western bank of the Sajó River, initially seizing and fortifying the bridge to block Mongol crossings.[33][32] On the night of 10 April and into dawn on 11 April, the Mongols launched a multi-pronged assault: one force attacked the bridge directly with arrows, stones hurled by catapults, and infantry, while Subutai led a detachment to cross the river downstream and another crossed upstream to strike the Hungarians from the rear and south.[5][33][32] This maneuver encircled the Hungarian camp, trapping the defenders amid intense projectile fire and preventing effective resistance.[5][33] When the Hungarians attempted to break out through a gap in the Mongol lines, it proved a deliberate trap, and Mongol horse archers massacred most of the fleeing forces.[33] The battle resulted in a decisive Mongol victory, with Hungarian losses estimated between 40,000 and 70,000, including much of the nobility, while King Béla IV escaped narrowly.[5] The defeat marked one of the most catastrophic in medieval Hungarian history, opening the way for Mongol ravaging of the kingdom until their withdrawal in 1242, which halted further Mongol advances into Europe.[5][31][32]

The Sajó (Slaná) River has experienced chronic pollution stemming from historical iron ore mining in eastern Slovakia, particularly in the upper basin around Nižná Slaná within the Slovak Ore Mountains. Mining operations, focused on siderite and other iron ores, dated back centuries but intensified in the 19th and 20th centuries before ceasing around 2008. Abandoned sites, including un-reclaimed heaps, tailings ponds, and old mining works, continue to serve as sources of environmental contamination through leaching and drainage.[34] These legacy mining features have led to elevated concentrations of heavy metals and related compounds in the surrounding environment, including iron, manganese, arsenic, nickel, and sulfates. Soil assessments in the Nižná Slaná area have documented severe contamination, with iron levels up to 6.7 times background values, manganese significantly exceeding typical Slovak soil ranges, arsenic up to 16 times the limit, and nickel above thresholds in some sites. These contaminants arise from mine wastes and contribute to ongoing ecological risks in the basin.[34][35] Mine drainage from abandoned shafts and workings has resulted in long-term low-level contamination of surface and groundwater in the Slaná River basin. Monitoring prior to 2022 recorded repeated exceedances of iron and manganese in surface waters over several years, alongside elevated manganese in groundwater since at least 2000, linked to historical mining waste water discharges. Sulfates and other heavy metals have also been associated with these chronic inputs from mine effluents.[36] This structural pollution from mining activities was dramatically intensified in 2022 when flooding of an abandoned mine increased the volume of contaminated drainage entering the river.[36]

Recent environmental incidents

In February 2022, contaminated water from a flooded abandoned iron ore mine in Nižná Slaná, eastern Slovakia, began discharging into the Slaná River (known as the Sajó in Hungary), turning a 20- to 30-kilometer stretch bright orange due to high concentrations of iron, zinc, manganese, sulphates, and traces of arsenic.[37][6][38] The pollution, originating from the former Siderit mine where pumping ceased after the company's 2008 bankruptcy, killed fish, crabs, and other aquatic wildlife along the affected section, severely damaging the river ecosystem and prompting local descriptions of an ecological disaster.[37][6] Slovak authorities responded by allocating funds and directing the state-owned Rudne Bane company to divert uncontaminated water and prevent further deep infiltration. Remediation work, including measures by the Central Mining Rescue Station, was completed by June 17, 2022, reducing pollutant concentrations by approximately 80%.[38][6] The incident raised transboundary concerns, with Hungarian officials conducting regular sampling and noting limited impact due to dilution upon the river's entry into Hungary, though bilateral cooperation was emphasized to monitor and address the effects.[6]

Major settlements

In Slovakia

The Slaná river flows through several settlements in eastern Slovakia, primarily in the Košický kraj and Banskobystrický kraj regions, traversing districts such as Rožňava and Rimavská Sobota. The most prominent town along its course is Rožňava, situated in the Rožňava Basin where the river passes directly through the urban area. Rožňava serves as a key administrative, service, and tourism center in the Upper Gemer region, nestled between the Slovak Ore Mountains and the Slovak Karst plateau, and is historically linked to mining activities.[17] Further downstream, the river flows through Tornaľa, an important town in the Rimava Basin. Here, the Slaná is lined with protective embankments on both banks, underscoring its significance for local flood protection and regional settlement patterns.[39] In the upper course, the river also passes near or along the town of Dobšiná in the Slovak Ore Mountains.[40] Numerous smaller villages line the banks in the upper and middle sections, including Vyšná Slaná and Nižná Slaná in the headwaters, as well as Brzotín, Plešivec, and Lenartovce nearer the border transition.

In Hungary

In Hungary, the Sajó river flows approximately 124 km through Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén county after entering from Slovakia, continuing southward through a mix of valley and plain landscapes before joining the Tisza River near Tiszaújváros. The most prominent and largest settlement along its course is Miskolc, where the river passes through the urban area and contributes to the city's geographical setting, including its alluvial fan apex near the town and the confluence with tributaries such as the Szinva stream.[41][42] Other notable settlements along or near the river include Sajószentpéter, a town positioned along the Sajó wetlands, as well as Felsőzsolca, Alsózsolca, and communities like Sajókeresztúr and Szirmabesenyő, which lie in close proximity to the river's path through the region.[43] These Hungarian settlements reflect the river's role in shaping local geography and supporting urban and rural communities in the northeastern part of the country.
