History
[edit]
In 2007, Trans Media planned to develop a news-oriented web TV network called Detik TV, which was named after the online news portal detik.com (which was acquired by Trans Media in 2011). It would broadcast entertainment and news programs, with some of the news content taken from Trans TV's Reportase and Trans7's Redaksi news programs.[2] Some time later, Detik TV was planned to become a digital free-to-air terrestrial news TV network.[3] In 2009, businessman Chairul Tanjung announced a strategic partnership between Trans Media and then-owner of the CNN brand, Turner Broadcasting System of Time Warner, to launch a CNN-branded channel in Indonesia.[4] Plans for the Detik TV network were then abandoned in favor of the new CNN Indonesia franchise.[5]
CNN Indonesia began as an online portal, CNNIndonesia.com, on 20 October 2014. It made its soft launch as a news channel on the 70th anniversary of the country's Proclamation of Independence (17 August 2015); the official launch day was held in conjunction with Trans Media's 14th anniversary (15 December 2015). Yusuf Arifin was its first editor-in-chief.

CNN Indonesia
View on GrokipediaCNN Indonesia is an Indonesian-language 24-hour television news channel and digital news portal owned and operated by PT Trans Media Corpora, a subsidiary of CT Group, under a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery's CNN brand.[1][2] Launched initially as an online portal on October 20, 2014, and expanding to television in August 2015 following a 2014 partnership between Trans Media and then-Turner Broadcasting System, it delivers news programming from studios in Jakarta, emphasizing domestic Indonesian events alongside international coverage adapted for local audiences.[3][4] The channel operates within Indonesia's concentrated media landscape, where ownership by conglomerates like CT Group—controlled by businessman Chairul Tanjung—can influence editorial priorities toward alignment with business and political interests rather than unfettered independence.[5] Despite the CNN branding, which implies global journalistic standards, content is produced locally in Bahasa Indonesia and distributed via free-to-air, cable, and Transvision pay-TV, reaching millions but subject to the regulatory and oligopolistic dynamics of Indonesian broadcasting.[2][6] Notable incidents include labor disputes, such as the dismissal of up to 11 journalists in September 2024 shortly after the formation of an independent union under Trans Media, prompting accusations of union suppression from international press freedom groups.[5] In September 2025, a CNN Indonesia reporter faced a temporary ban from presidential events after posing a challenging question to President Prabowo Subianto, drawing condemnation from media organizations for restricting press access and highlighting tensions between the outlet and government authorities.[7] These events underscore operational challenges in maintaining journalistic autonomy amid corporate oversight and political pressures in Indonesia's media environment.[8]
