  • NMIMS was barred by the University Grants Commission from offering distance learning and online courses in February 2023[26] for offering Online courses without UGC approval. Some other reasons include inadequate faculties and non-teaching staff, and low quality of Self-learning Material. However, the ban was lifted in August 2024 after NMIMS complied with the norms.[27]
  • In June 2025, the Bombay High Court advised SVKM's NMIMS to consider a reformative approach and grant a second chance to two first-year MBA students whose admissions had been cancelled for tampering with their mid-term corporate finance exam papers. Despite the misconduct, the court took into account the students' remorse and psychological trauma, suggesting that the institution reevaluate its decision rather than uphold strict punitive measures. The matter remains pending further hearings and potential re-examinations.[28]

Founding and Early Development

SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) was established in 1981 by the Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal (SVKM), a charitable trust founded in 1934, to address the growing need for quality management education in India. Initially located above Bhaidas Hall in Vile Parle (West), Mumbai, the institute began operations as a postgraduate management school affiliated with the University of Mumbai, offering a two-year full-time Master's in Management Studies (MMS) program. With an intake of just 40 students, four full-time faculty members, and a modest library of 3,162 books, NMIMS emphasized practical business education from its inception, leveraging SVKM's existing educational network for initial infrastructure and faculty support. The process emphasizes merit, incorporating scores from designated entrance tests, prior academic performance, and achievements in extracurricular areas such as sports and arts. For undergraduate programs in , , , liberal arts, and related fields, the NMIMS Programs After Twelfth (NPAT) serves as the primary entrance exam, while the NMIMS (NCET) applies to engineering and pharmacy programs, and the NMIMS Law Aptitude Test (NLAT) is required for admissions. Postgraduate programs, including MBA specializations in pharmaceutical , rely on the NMAT by GMAC, with additional tests like the NMIMS Scholastic Test (MST) for specialized undergraduate tracks in mathematics and . Applications for these exams are submitted online through dedicated platforms, such as npat.nmims.edu for NPAT and NLAT, and nmat.org for NMAT, with registration fees ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹7,000 depending on the number of programs selected. For the 2025-2026 admissions cycle, NMAT registration opened on August 1, 2025, with the application deadline extended to October 18, 2025; NPAT and NLAT phases ran from March to May 2025, followed by counseling. UGC Regulations and Distance Education Issues

In February 2023, the University Grants Commission (UGC) debarred SVKM's Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS) from offering Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online programs for the academic sessions of January-February 2023, July-August 2023, and January-February 2024, citing non-compliance with UGC regulations on ODL and online education. The debarment stemmed from violations including inadequate functioning of the Centre for Internal Quality Assurance (CIQA) and failure to meet minimum standards for program delivery, as outlined in UGC guidelines. This action affected approximately 20,000 students enrolled in the January 2023 batch alone, primarily in popular programs such as online MBA and BBA offerings. NMIMS responded by filing a in the in May 2023, challenging the UGC's notice and seeking interim relief for ongoing students. The university also engaged directly with the UGC to address compliance issues. Following a compliance audit and improvements, the ban was lifted in August 2024, permitting NMIMS to resume admissions for ODL and online programs starting from the July-August 2024 session. The resolution allowed the reinstatement of virtual campus programs without further judicial intervention, as the matter was settled administratively. The debarment led to a temporary suspension of NMIMS's distance and online MBA and BBA programs, disrupting academic continuity for enrolled students and prompting refunds or transfer options in some cases. To meet UGC standards, the university enhanced its digital infrastructure, including upgrades to learning management systems and mechanisms, ensuring robust support for remote delivery. This investment aligned the institution's capabilities with regulatory requirements for credible pedagogy. Post-resolution, NMIMS's renewed focus on ODL and online programs supports the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020's vision for flexible, hybrid learning models that integrate technology to expand access to higher education. The episode underscores the UGC's emphasis on stringent oversight to maintain quality in amid India's growing demand for accessible degree options.

Admission and Examination Disputes

In June 2025, the advised SVKM's NMIMS to reconsider its decision to cancel the admissions of two first-year MBA students accused of tampering with marks on an internal examination conducted in March 2024 during their second semester. The students, aged 23 and 25 from and respectively, had altered scores on their answer sheets (e.g., changing 8.5 to 18.5), leading NMIMS to bar them from third-semester exams starting March 25, 2025; the court emphasized a reformative approach, noting the students' strong academic records and suggesting they had learned from the incident. Following further hearings, on September 3, 2025, a of Justices Makarand Karnik and Nitin Borkar quashed NMIMS's cancellation order, ruling the act impulsive rather than malicious and highlighting the university's failure to provide a fair hearing or consider the students' overall performance, which would have allowed them to pass without the tampering. The court permitted the students to appear for re-examinations and continue their studies, subject to results, while upholding lesser penalties such as ineligibility for scholarships, debarment from clubs and events, and exclusion from awards. This outcome underscored the principle of proportionality in academic punishments, avoiding disproportionate ruin to the students' careers. In response to integrity concerns raised in such cases, including reported incidents during the NMAT 2024 cycle, NMIMS has integrated AI-based proctoring tools into its selection and examination processes to enhance monitoring and prevent malpractices. These measures, part of broader updates to the NMAT by GMAC framework, include real-time AI-assisted assessments during competency tests and personal interviews, aiming to ensure fairness in scoring and evaluation. Additionally, NMIMS has implemented transparency policies for NMAT scoring, such as accepting only the first attempt's results and providing clear guidelines on weightage (reduced to 20% for NMAT in recent cycles) alongside competency evaluations, to address perceptions of opacity in admissions. Overall, these incidents have prompted no major institutional suspensions but have driven policy reviews focused on procedural fairness and across NMIMS programs. The maintains a 30% reservation for female candidates in MBA programs to promote gender diversity. In February 2025, over 50 students at the NMIMS Hyderabad campus in suffered food poisoning after consuming meals from the campus mess, leading to hospitalizations. Reports indicated lapses in and , with some students alleging the administration initially treated affected individuals in the rather than seeking immediate medical help. The formed a committee to investigate the incident, reaffirming its commitment to student health and safety, and described it as an isolated event affecting 27 out of 1,200 residents. The controversy escalated when a law student at the campus was suspended for allegedly exposing the food poisoning incident through and media interactions. In May 2025, the granted interim relief to the student, directing the university to reinstate her and prohibiting further adverse actions pending the final hearing. The court emphasized principles of and freedom of expression in academic settings. This case highlighted ongoing concerns about administrative transparency and student welfare at NMIMS satellite campuses.
