Palenque (Spanish pronunciation: [pa'leŋke]; Yucatec Maya: Bàakʼ [ɓaːkʼ]), also anciently known in the Itza Language as Lakamha ("big water" or "big waters"),[1][2] was a Maya city-state in southern Mexico that perished in the 8th century. The Palenque ruins date from ca. 226 BC to ca. 799 AD. After its decline, it was overgrown by the jungle of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees,[3] but has since been excavated and restored. It is located near the Usumacinta River in the Mexican state of Chiapas, about 130 km (81 mi) south of Ciudad del Carmen, 150 meters (490 ft) above sea level. It is adjacent to the modern town of Palenque, Chiapas. It averages a humid 26 °C (79 °F) with roughly 2,160 millimeters (85 in) of rain a year.[3]

Key Information

Palenque is a medium-sized site, smaller than Tikal, Chichen Itza, or Copán, but it contains some of the finest architecture, sculpture, roof comb and bas-relief carvings that the Mayas produced. Much of the history of Palenque has been reconstructed from reading the hieroglyphic inscriptions on the many monuments; historians now have a long sequence of the ruling dynasty of Palenque in the 5th century and extensive knowledge of the city-state's rivalry with other states such as Calakmul and Toniná. The most famous ruler of Palenque was Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal, or Pacal the Great, whose tomb has been found and excavated in the Temple of the Inscriptions. By 2005, the discovered area covered up to 2.5 km2 (0.97 sq mi), but it is estimated that less than 10% of the total area of the city is explored, leaving more than a thousand structures still covered by jungle. Palenque received 920,470 visitors in 2017.[4]

History

Mythological beings using a variety of emblem glyphs in their titles suggests a complex early history. For instance, Kʼukʼ Bahlam I, the supposed founder of the Palenque dynasty, is called a Toktan Ajaw in the text of the Temple of the Foliated Cross.

The famous structures that we know today probably represent a rebuilding effort in response to the attacks by the city of Calakmul and its client states in 599 and 611.[5] One of the main figures responsible for rebuilding Palenque and for a renaissance in the city's art and architecture is also one of the best-known Maya Ajaw, Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal (Pacal the Great), who ruled from 615 to 683. He is known through his funerary monument dubbed the Temple of the Inscriptions, after the lengthy text preserved in the temple's superstructure. At the time Alberto Ruz Lhuillier excavated Pakal's tomb, it was the richest and best preserved of any scientifically excavated burial then known from the ancient Americas. It held this position until the discovery of the rich Moche burials at Sipán, Peru and the recent[when?] discoveries at Copán and Calakmul.

Beside the attention that Kʼinich Janaab' Pakal's tomb brought to Palenque, the city is historically significant for its extensive hieroglyphic corpus composed during the reigns of Janaabʼ Pakal, his son Kʼinich Kan Bahlam II, and his grandson Kʼinich Akal Moʼ Naabʼ, and for being the location where Heinrich Berlin[6] and later Linda Schele and Peter Mathews outlined the first dynastic list for any Maya city.[7] The work of Tatiana Proskouriakoff as well as that of Berlin, Schele, Mathews, and others, initiated the intense historical investigations that characterized much of the scholarship on the ancient Maya from the 1960s to the present.[8] The extensive iconography and textual corpus has also allowed for study of Classic period Maya mythology[9] and ritual practice.[10]

Early Classic period

The first ajaw, or king, of Bʼaakal that we know of was Kʼuk Balam (Quetzal Jaguar), who governed for four years starting in the year 431. After him, a king came to power, nicknamed "Casper" by archaeologists. The next two kings were probably Casper's sons. Little was known about the first of these, Bʼutz Aj Sak Chiik, until 1994, when a tablet was found describing a ritual for the king. The first tablet mentioned his successor Ahkal Moʼ Naab I as a teenage prince, and therefore it is believed that there was a family relation between them. For unknown reasons, Akhal Moʼ Naab I had great prestige, so the kings who succeeded him were proud to be his descendants.

When Ahkal Moʼ Naab I died in 524, there was an interregnum of four years, before the following king was crowned at Toktán in 529. Kʼan Joy Chitam I governed for 36 years. His sons Ahkal Moʼ Naab II and Kʼan Bʼalam I were the first kings who used the title Kinich, which means "the great sun". This word was used also by later kings. Bʼalam was succeeded in 583 by Yohl Ikʼnal, who was supposedly his daughter. The inscriptions found in Palenque document a battle that occurred under her government in which troops from Calakmul invaded and sacked Palenque, a military feat without known precedents. These events took place in 599.

A second victory by Calakmul occurred some twelve years later, in 611, under the government of Aj Ne' Yohl Mat, son of Yohl Iknal. In this occasion, the king of Calakmul entered Palenque in person, consolidating a significant military disaster, which was followed by an epoch of political disorder. Aj Ne' Yohl Mat was to die in 612.

Late Classic period

Bʼaakal began the Late Classic period in the throes of the disorder created by the defeats before Calakmul. The glyphic panels at the Temple of the Inscriptions, which records the events at this time, relates that some fundamental annual religious ceremonies were not performed in 613, and at this point states: "Lost is the divine lady, lost is the king."[13] Mentions of the government at the time have not been found.

It is believed that after the death of Aj Ne' Yohl Mat, Janaab Pakal, also called Pakal I, took power thanks to a political agreement. Janaab Pakal assumed the functions of the ajaw (king) but never was crowned. He was succeeded in 612 by his daughter, the queen Sak Kʼukʼ, who governed for only three years until her son was old enough to rule. It is considered that the dynasty was reestablished from then on, so Bʼaakal retook the path of glory and splendor.

The grandson of Janaab Pakal is the most famous of the Mayan kings, Kʼinich Janaab' Pakal, also known as Pakal the Great. He began rule at the age of 12 years after his mother Sak Kuk resigned as queen after three years, thus passing power on to him. Pakal the Great reigned in Palenque from 615 to 683, and his mother remained an important force for the first 25 years of his rule. She may have ruled jointly with him. Known as the favorite of the gods, he carried Palenque to new levels of splendor, in spite of having come to power when the city was at a low point. Pakal married the princess of Oktán, Lady Tzakbu Ajaw (also known as Ahpo-Hel) in 624 and had at least three children.

Most of the palaces and temples of Palenque were constructed during his government; the city flourished as never before, eclipsing Tikal. The central complex, known as The Palace, was enlarged and remodeled on various occasions, notably in the years 654, 661, and 668. In this structure, is a text describing how in that epoch Palenque was newly allied with Tikal, and also with Yaxchilan, and that they were able to capture the six enemy kings of the alliance. Not much more had been translated from the text.

In the Palace

After the death of Pakal in 683, his older son Kʼinich Kan Bʼalam assumed the kingship of Bʼaakal, who in turn was succeeded in 702 by his brother Kʼinich Kʼan Joy Chitam II. The first continued the architectural and sculptural works that were begun by his father, as well as finishing the construction of the famous tomb of Pakal. Pakal's sarcophagus, built for a very tall man, held the richest collection of jade seen in a Mayan tomb. A jade mosaic mask was placed over his face, and a suit made of jade adorned his body, with each piece hand-carved and held together by gold wire.[3]

Furthermore, Kʼinich Kan Bʼalam I began ambitious projects, including the Group of the Crosses. Thanks to numerous works begun during his government, now we have portraits of this king, found in various sculptures. His brother succeeded him continuing construction and art with the same enthusiasm, reconstructing and enlarging the north side of the Palace. Thanks to the reign of these three kings, Bʼaakal had a century of growth and splendor.

In 711, Palenque was sacked by the realm of Toniná, and the old king Kʼinich Kʼan Joy Chitam II was taken prisoner. It is not known what the final fate of the king was, and it is presumed that he was executed in Toniná. For 10 years there was no king. Finally, Kʼinich Ahkal Moʼ Nab' III was crowned in 722. Although the new king belonged to the royalty, there is no evidence that he was the direct inheritor of Kʼinich Kʼan Joy Chitam II. It is believed, therefore, that this coronation was a break in the dynastic line, and probably Kʼinich Ahkal Nab' arrived to power after years of maneuvering and forging political alliances. This king, his son, and grandson governed until the end of the 8th century. Little is known about this period, except that, among other events, the war with Toniná continued, where there are hieroglyphics that record a new defeat of Palenque.

Occasionally city-state lords were women. Lady Sak Kuk ruled at Palenque for at least three years starting in 612 CE, before she passed her title to her son. However, these female rulers were accorded male attributes. They were presented as more masculine, since they had assumed roles that were typically held by men.[14]

Abandonment

During the 8th century, Bʼaakal came under increasing stress, in concert with most other Classic Mayan city-states, and there was no new elite construction in the ceremonial center sometime after 800. An agricultural population continued to live here for a few generations, then the site was abandoned and was slowly grown over by the forest. The district was very sparsely populated when the Spanish first arrived in the 1520s.

The Temple of the Inscriptions had begun perhaps as early as 675[15] as the funerary monument of Hanab-Pakal. The temple superstructure houses the second longest glyphic text known from the Maya world (the longest is the Hieroglyphic Stairway at Copan). The Temple of the Inscriptions records approximately 180 years of the city's history from the 4th through 12th Kʼatun. The focal point of the narrative records Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal's Kʼatun period-ending rituals focused on the icons of the city's patron deities prosaically known collectively as the Palenque Triad or individually as GI, GII, and GIII.[16]

The pyramid measures 60 meters wide, 42.5 meters deep and 27.2 meters high. The summit temple measures 25.5 meters wide, 10.5 meters deep and 11.4 meters high. The largest stones weigh 12 to 15 tons. These were on top of the pyramid. The total volume of pyramid and temple is 32,500 cu. meters.[17]

In 1952 Alberto Ruz Lhuillier removed a stone slab in the floor of the back room of the temple superstructure to reveal a passageway (filled in shortly before the city's abandonment and reopened by archeologists) leading through a long stairway to Pakal's tomb. The tomb itself is remarkable for its large carved sarcophagus, the rich ornaments accompanying Pakal, and for the stucco sculpture decorating the walls of the tomb. Unique to Pakal's tomb is the psychoduct, which leads from the tomb itself, up the stairway and through a hole in the stone covering the entrance to the burial. This psychoduct is perhaps a physical reference to concepts about the departure of the soul at the time of death in Maya eschatology where in the inscriptions the phrase ochb'ihaj sak ikʼil (the white breath road-entered) is used to refer to the leaving of the soul. A find such as this is greatly important because it demonstrated for the first time the temple usage as being multifaceted. These pyramids were, for the first time, identified as temples and also funerary structures.

The much-discussed iconography of the sarcophagus lid depicts Pakal in the guise of one of the manifestations of the Maya maize god emerging from the maws of the underworld.[18]

The temple also has a duct structure that still is not completely understood by archaeologists. It has been suggested that the duct aligns with the winter solstice and that the sun shines down on Pakal's tomb.

Temples of the Cross group

The Temple of the Cross, Temple of the Sun, and Temple of the Foliated Cross are a set of graceful temples atop step pyramids, each with an elaborately carved relief in the inner chamber depicting two figures presenting ritual objects and effigies to a central icon. Earlier interpretations had argued that the smaller figure was that of Kʼinich Janaabʼ Pakal while the larger figure was Kʼinich Kan Bʼahlam. However, it is now known based on a better understanding of the iconography and epigraphy that the central tablet depicts two images of Kan Bʼahlam. The smaller figure shows Kʼinich Kan Bʼahlam during a rite of passage ritual at the age of six (9.10.8.9.3 9 Akbal 6 Xul) while the larger is of his accession to kingship at the age of 48.[19] These temples were named by early explorers; the cross-like images in two of the reliefs actually depict the tree of creation at the center of the world in Maya mythology.

Palace

The Palace, a complex of several connected and adjacent buildings and courtyards, was built by several generations on a wide artificial terrace during four century period. The Palace was used by the Mayan aristocracy for bureaucratic functions, entertainment, and ritualistic ceremonies. The Palace is located in the center of the ancient city.

Within the Palace there are numerous sculptures and bas-relief carvings that have been conserved. The Palace most unusual and recognizable feature is the four-story tower known as The Observation Tower. The Observation Tower like many other buildings at the site exhibit a mansard-like roof. The A-shaped corbel arch is an architectural motif observed throughout the complex. The Corbel arches require a large amount of masonry mass and are limited to a small dimensional ratio of width to height providing the characteristic high ceilings and narrow passageways. The Palace was equipped with numerous large baths and saunas which were supplied with fresh water by an intricate water system. An aqueduct, constructed of great stone blocks with a three-meter-high vault, diverts the Otulum River to flow underneath the main plaza. The Palace is the largest building complex in Palenque measuring 97 meters by 73 meters at its base.

  • The Temple of the Skull has a skull on one of the pillars.
  • Temple XIII contained the Tomb of the Red Queen, an unknown noble woman, possibly the wife of Pakal, discovered in 1994. The remains in the sarcophagus were completely covered with a bright red powder made of cinnabar.
  • The Temple of The Jaguar (a.k.a. The Temple of the Beautiful Relief) at a distance of some 200 meters south of the main group of temples; its name came from the elaborate bas-relief carving of a king seated on a throne in the form of a jaguar.
  • Structure XII with a bas-relief carving of the God of Death.
  • Temple of the Count another elegant Classic Palenque temple, which got its name from the fact that early explorer Jean-Frédéric Waldeck lived in the building for some time, and Waldeck claimed to be a count.

The site also has a number of other temples, tombs, and elite residences, some a good distance from the center of the site, a court for playing the Mesoamerican ballgame, and an interesting stone bridge over the Otulum River some distance below the Aqueduct.

Modern investigations

After de la Nada's brief account of the ruins, no attention was paid to them until 1773 when one Don Ramon de Ordoñez y Aguilar examined Palenque and sent a report to the Capitan General in Antigua Guatemala, a further examination was made in 1784 saying that the ruins were of particular interest, so two years later surveyor and architect Antonio Bernasconi was sent with a small military force under Colonel Antonio del Río to examine the site in more detail. Del Rio's forces smashed through several walls to see what could be found, doing a fair amount of damage to the Palace, while Bernasconi made the first map of the site as well as drawing copies of a few of the bas-relief figures and sculptures. Draughtsman Luciano Castañeda made more drawings in 1807, and a book on Palenque, Descriptions of the Ruins of an Ancient City, discovered near Palenque, was published in London in 1822 based on the reports of those last two expeditions together with engravings based on Bernasconi and Castañedas drawings; two more publications in 1834 contained descriptions and drawings based on the same sources.

Juan Galindo visited Palenque in 1831, and filed a report with the Central American government. He was the first to note that the figures depicted in Palenque's ancient art looked like the local Native Americans; some other early explorers, even years later, attributed the site to such distant peoples as Egyptians, Polynesians, or the Lost Tribes of Israel.

Starting in 1832 Jean-Frédéric Waldeck spent two years at Palenque making numerous drawings, but most of his work was not published until 1866. Meanwhile, the site was visited in 1840 first by Patrick Walker and Herbert Caddy on a mission from the governor of British Honduras, and then by John Lloyd Stephens and Frederick Catherwood who published an illustrated account the following year which was greatly superior to the previous accounts of the ruins.

Désiré Charnay took the first photographs of Palenque in 1858, and returned in 1881–1882. Alfred Maudslay encamped at the ruins in 1890–1891 and took extensive photographs of all the art and inscriptions he could find, and made paper and plaster molds of many of the inscriptions, and detailed maps and drawings, setting a high standard for all future investigators to follow. Maudslay learned the technique of making the papier mache molds of the sculptures from Frenchman Desire Charnay.

Several other expeditions visited the ruins before Frans Blom of Tulane University in 1923, who made superior maps of both the main site and various previously neglected outlying ruins and filed a report for the Mexican government on recommendations on work that could be done to preserve the ruins.

From 1949 through 1952 Alberto Ruz Lhuillier supervised excavations and consolidations of the site for Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH); it was Ruz Lhuillier who was the first person to gaze upon Pacal the Great's tomb in over a thousand years. Ruz worked for four years at the Temple of the Inscriptions before unearthing the tomb. Further INAH work was done in lead by Jorge Acosta into the 1970s.

In 1973, the first of the very productive Palenque Mesa Redonda (Round table) conferences was held here on the inspiration of Merle Greene Robertson; thereafter every few years leading Mayanists would meet at Palenque to discuss and examine new findings in the field. Meanwhile, Robertson was conducting a detailed examination of all art at Palenque, including recording all the traces of color on the sculptures.

The 1970s also saw a small museum built at the site.

In the last 15 or 20 years, a great deal more of the site has been excavated, but currently archaeologists estimate that only 5% of the total city has been uncovered.

In 2010, Pennsylvania State University researchers, Christopher Duffy and Kirk French, identified the Piedras Bolas Aqueduct as a pressurised aqueduct, the earliest known in the New World. It is a spring-fed conduit located on steep terrain that has a restricted outlet that would cause the water to exit forcefully, under pressure, to a height of 6 metres (20 ft). They were unable to identify the use for this man-made feature.[20]

In June 2022, archaeologists from the Mexico's National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) announced the discovery of a 1,300-year-old nine-inch-tall stucco head statue in a pond, believed to be a young Hun Hunahpu, the Maya's mythological maize god. The figure's semi-shaved haircut that resembles ripe corn was the reason they identified it as a young maize god. Researchers assume that the Mayan inhabitants of Palenque possibly placed a large stone statuette over a pond to represent the entrance to the underworld. According to archaeologist Arnoldo González Cruz, the Mayan people symbolically shuttered the pool by breaking up some of the stucco and filling it with animal remains, including pottery fragments, carved bone remains, shells, obsidian arrowheads, beads, vegetables, and other items.[21]

Paleontological significance

Research inside the temples of Palenque has revealed the presence of numerous extremely well-preserved fossils of marine fish and invertebrates in the limestone slabs used to build the temples, as well as in the former quarries that this limestone was mined in. The existence of these fossils was known since the 19th century, but they only received significant scientific and archeological attention since the 2000s.[22][23] These fossils have been dated to the Tenejapa-Lacandón Formation of the Early Paleocene, shortly after the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event, and document the recovery of marine ecosystems following the extinction, including the development of modern coral reefs. Fossils include some of the earliest representatives of modern reef fish, such as serranids (Paleoserranus), damselfish (Chaychanus), and syngnathiforms (Eekaulostomus), in addition to some of the last members of extinct groups such as pycnodontids. This diverse ecosystem existed despite the area being relatively close to the impact site of the Chicxulub meteor, which caused the extinction in the first place.[22] The Mayan residents of the area appear to have been well aware of these fossils and actively collected them, including by using fossil shark teeth and ray spines from the nearby Miocene Tulijá Formation as cutting tools, painting some of the fish skeletons, and cutting the slabs to display the fossils better, making them among the earliest known paleontologists.[23]

Palenque National Park

'Palenque National Parkʼ was designated in 1981 by the Mexican government. It covers an area of 17.72 km2, which encompasses the ancient city and the hills to the south. The park includes a family camp site.[24]

Overview and Location

Geographical and Environmental Setting

Palenque is situated in the northern part of the state of Chiapas, Mexico, within the Usumacinta River basin, approximately 8 kilometers southwest of the modern town of Palenque.[6] The archaeological site lies at coordinates 17°29′N 92°03′W and reaches an elevation of about 150 meters above the surrounding plains of Tabasco.[6] This positioning places Palenque on a narrow escarpment at the base of the Sierra de Chiapas mountains, integrating the ruins into a dramatic landscape of ridges and valleys that influenced its urban layout and water systems.[6] The environment surrounding Palenque consists of lowland tropical moist forest, characterized by dense vegetation that envelops the ancient structures and contributes to their preservation through overgrowth.[6] The terrain features limestone karst topography, with numerous natural springs, waterfalls, and spring-fed streams such as the Otolúm and Michol rivers, which provided essential water resources and shaped the site's development.[6] These karst features arise from the underlying Late Cretaceous limestone bedrock (approximately 99.6–65.5 million years old), which is highly permeable due to dissolution, fractures, and macropores, forming part of the broader Mayan tectonic block.[6] Palenque experiences a hot and humid subtropical climate, with average temperatures ranging from 22.9°C in December and January to 28.8°C in May.[6] Annual rainfall varies between 1,500 and 3,200 millimeters, concentrated in a rainy season from June to November (300–550 mm per month), while the dry season from December to May sees 40–250 mm per month, with October being the wettest and April the driest.[6] This high precipitation fosters the lush rainforest but also poses ongoing challenges for site maintenance due to humidity and vegetation regrowth.[1]

The unique focus on maternal inheritance and elaborate ritual accessions—often framed as divine reenactments—highlights Palenque's ideological distinctiveness, portraying kingship as a sacred obligation intertwined with cosmic origins rather than mere conquest.[53]

Modern Investigations

Early European Explorations

The first documented European encounter with the ruins of Palenque occurred in 1567, when Spanish friar Pedro Lorenzo de la Nada explored the area near the Usumacinta River in Chiapas, Mexico, and published an account describing the abandoned stone temples and plazas originally adorned with painted stucco.[54] De la Nada named the site "Palenque," deriving from the Spanish term for "fortification," based on his observations of its structured layout amid the landscape.[54] These early reports remained vague and did not lead to further immediate investigation, as the site's remote location in the Chiapas highlands limited colonial interest.[55] In the late 18th century, Spanish authorities commissioned more systematic surveys of the ruins. In 1786, Captain Antonio del Río led an expedition ordered by the Crown to excavate for potential treasures, focusing on key structures such as the Palace, Temple of the Inscriptions, and the Temples of the Cross and Sun; his team used basic tools like crowbars and pickaxes to clear debris and document findings, ultimately sending artifacts to Spain.[55] Del Río's report, published in London in 1822, included initial sketches of the architecture, marking the first illustrated account of the site.[55] Around the same period, other Spanish explorers like José Antonio Calderón visited in 1784, contributing preliminary notes that circulated among officials but lacked widespread dissemination.[55] The 19th century brought more detailed artistic documentation through individual adventurers. French artist Jean-Frédéric Waldeck arrived at Palenque in 1832 and resided there for over a year, producing neoclassical-style drawings of the ruins and sculptures despite the site's damp, overgrown conditions; his work, including lithographs, appeared in the 1866 publication Monuments Anciens du Mexique.[55] In 1840, American traveler John Lloyd Stephens and British architect Frederick Catherwood conducted a thorough exploration, with Catherwood creating precise lithographs of the temples and inscriptions even while battling illness from the humid environment.[55] Their findings, detailed in Stephens's 1841 book Incidents of Travel in Central America, Chiapas, and Yucatan, popularized Palenque in Europe and North America, sparking broader interest in Maya civilization.[55] Throughout these expeditions, explorers faced significant obstacles from the dense jungle surrounding Palenque, including thick foliage of cedar, mahogany, and sapodilla trees that obscured structures and caused frequent fog, while limited access routes and rudimentary equipment often resulted in incomplete or romanticized depictions rather than accurate mappings.[55] These preliminary efforts laid the groundwork for later, more organized archaeological work in the 20th century.[55]

20th-Century Excavations

In the early 20th century, systematic archaeological work at Palenque began under the auspices of Mexican institutions, marking a shift from informal explorations to state-sponsored projects. In the 1920s and 1930s, efforts focused on initial mapping and vegetation clearance, building on earlier 19th-century surveys. Mexican archaeologist Miguel Ángel Fernández conducted excavations starting in 1933, targeting key structures such as the Temple of the Sun and the Group of the Cross, where he uncovered offerings, tablets like the Tablet of the 96 Glyphs, and a votive ax suggesting external influences.[56] These activities, supported by the Mexican government, involved clearing dense jungle overgrowth to access monumental architecture, though limited by logistical challenges including poor access and health risks; Fernández's work continued until his death in 1945, leaving partial excavations and debris across the site.[56] By the 1940s, the newly founded Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH, established 1939) took over coordination, emphasizing conservation and epigraphic documentation, with Heinrich Berlin contributing to glyph studies in 1940.[56] The mid-20th century saw intensified excavations led by INAH archaeologist Alberto Ruz Lhuillier, who initiated major projects in 1949 with funding from both INAH and international sources like the Institute of Andean Research. Over the next decade, Ruz's team cleared extensive vegetation from the central acropolis, Palace, and Temple of the Inscriptions, removing over 6,000 tons of rubble and mapping refinements based on Alfred Maudslay's 1890 plan.[56] A landmark discovery occurred between 1949 and 1952 when Ruz excavated the Temple of the Inscriptions, revealing a hidden staircase leading to the tomb of K'inich Janaab' Pakal I, containing a massive sarcophagus, jade artifacts, and intricate hieroglyphs that provided crucial insights into Maya rulership.[57][56] This find, one of the most significant in 20th-century Mesoamerican archaeology, included Pakal's tomb artifacts such as stucco figures and ceremonial offerings, highlighting the site's royal funerary practices.[56] By 1958, these efforts had documented numerous elite burials, frescoes, and ceramics across structures like Temples XIII, XVIII, and XXI, expanding knowledge of Palenque's architectural and artistic complexity.[56] From the 1960s through the 1990s, excavations transitioned toward detailed epigraphic analysis, polychrome reconstruction, and site-wide mapping under INAH oversight, with notable contributions from Merle Greene Robertson. Robertson's work in the 1960s and 1970s focused on inscriptions and original paints on structures like the Temple of the Inscriptions and Cross Group, producing rubbings and reconstructions that revealed vibrant polychrome decorations and narrative texts.[58] She organized the Palenque Round Tables starting in 1973, fostering international collaboration on hieroglyphic decipherment and site conservation.[58] Ongoing restorations addressed environmental damage, including post-flood recovery efforts in the 1970s, which stabilized structures in the Palace Complex and North Group.[56] By the late 1990s, comprehensive mapping projects under INAH's Proyecto Especial Palenque had documented over 1,000 rooms and more than 500 structures across an urban core of approximately 2.5 square kilometers, delineating the site's extensive residential and ceremonial layout.[59] These endeavors not only preserved Palenque's core features but also established it as a benchmark for Maya urban studies.[56]

Recent Discoveries and Research

From the mid-2010s onward, LiDAR surveys transformed understandings of Palenque's extent, revealing extensive hidden structures and urban sprawl beneath the jungle canopy that indicated a far larger population center than previously mapped.[60] These airborne laser scans identified thousands of previously unknown features, including residential complexes, causeways, and agricultural terraces, expanding the site's known footprint to over 1,400 structures across 1,780 hectares.[61] Concurrently, genetic analyses of remains from royal tombs, such as those of K’inich Janaab’ Pakal and the Red Queen, confirmed aspects of elite lineages while ruling out direct familial ties between certain interred individuals, providing insights into dynastic marriages and succession practices.[62] A significant 2023 discovery occurred during construction of the Tren Maya Hotel near Palenque, where workers unearthed a stone-lined tomb sealed with limestone slabs containing the remains of one high-status individual accompanied by funerary offerings, including three ceramic vessels, ear flares, and greenstone beads, dating to the Late Classic period (A.D. 600–900).[63] In September 2023, archaeologists uncovered an intricately carved nose ornament made from human bone at Palenque's Palace complex, depicting a figure with symbolic engravings of headdresses and beaded necklaces that evoked jewelry motifs associated with divine communication and fertility rites.[64] Recent reports from 2024 and 2025 emphasize that approximately 90% of Palenque remains unexplored, with LiDAR data identifying new dense urban areas nearby that suggest interconnected settlements supporting tens of thousands of inhabitants.[65] Ongoing INAH-led research employs 3D modeling and cloud-based atlases to document and conserve structures, including the Palenque 3D Archaeological Atlas (based on 2020–2022 data with 960 million LiDAR points over 25 km²), enabling virtual reconstructions that aid in preservation planning and public access.[66] Scholars continue to debate the impacts of contemporary climate change on the site's limestone architecture and surrounding ecosystems, with increased humidity and rainfall accelerating erosion and vegetation overgrowth.[6]

Palenque National Park

Biodiversity and Ecology

Palenque National Park encompasses a rich tropical rainforest habitat, characterized by dense, humid evergreen forests that support a diverse array of wildlife. The park is home to several primate species, including the endangered black howler monkey (Alouatta pigra), which is known for its distinctive vocalizations, as well as spider monkeys (Ateles geoffroyi) that navigate the canopy with agility. Jaguars (Panthera onca), a keystone predator, inhabit the forested areas, though sightings are rare due to their elusive nature. Over 300 bird species have been recorded in the region, representing a significant portion of Mexico's avifauna, with notable examples including the vibrant scarlet macaw (Ara macao) and various birds of prey, of which 50 out of Mexico's 87 species are present.[67][68][69] The park's flora exhibits high diversity, with approximately 484 vascular plant species identified across 100 families, contributing to the multilayered structure of the rainforest. Prominent trees include the towering ceiba (Ceiba pentandra), revered in Maya culture for its symbolic role as a world tree, and mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla), which forms part of the emergent canopy alongside cedars and palms. The park's total species count exceeds 1,500, underscoring its role as a critical refuge in Chiapas' lowland ecosystems.[73][74] Vegetation in the park interacts dynamically with the ancient Maya ruins, where vines and tree roots both preserve and endanger the structures. Dense jungle growth has historically shielded buildings from erosion and looting since the site's abandonment around the 9th century, but encroaching roots from figs and ceibas now infiltrate masonry, accelerating decay and necessitating ongoing management to balance ecological integrity with archaeological preservation.[1][1]

Conservation and Tourism

The Palenque National Park was officially decreed on July 20, 1981, encompassing 1,771.95 hectares of the archaeological zone and surrounding jungle to protect the ancient Maya city's structures and natural environment.[68] This designation followed initial maintenance efforts that began around 1940, when systematic conservation work started to address environmental threats to the monuments.[1] In 1987, the site was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage property under the name "Pre-Hispanic City and National Park of Palenque," recognizing its exceptional architectural and sculptural achievements without an initial buffer zone, though the core area spans approximately 1,780 hectares containing over 1,400 recorded buildings.[1] Management is shared between the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH) and the National Commission of Protected Natural Areas (CONANP), emphasizing sustainable preservation.[7] Conservation faces significant challenges from the region's high humidity, which accelerates the deterioration of stone and stucco facades, as well as historical looting that has targeted artifacts despite the site's dense jungle cover providing some natural concealment.[1] Tourism pressure exacerbates these issues, with approximately 600,000 visitors annually before 2020 contributing to wear on pathways and structures, alongside problems from informal vending and foot traffic.[1] INAH-led restoration projects, ongoing since the mid-20th century, prioritize the use of original materials to maintain authenticity in repairing key monuments like the Temple of the Inscriptions and the Palace, while eco-tourism guidelines promote low-impact visitation to mitigate environmental strain.[7] Recent management plans incorporate climate adaptation strategies, such as monitoring vegetation overgrowth and material resilience, to counter increasing rainfall and humidity linked to broader environmental changes.[1] Tourism at Palenque centers on guided trails that wind through the jungle-clad ruins, allowing visitors to explore major structures while learning about Maya history from certified INAH guides.[7] The on-site Museo de Sitio Arqueológico de Palenque, named after archaeologist Alberto Ruz L'Huillier, features exhibits of recovered artifacts and a full-scale replica of King Pakal's sarcophagus from the Temple of the Inscriptions, providing context without disturbing the original tomb.[7] Many itineraries integrate Palenque with nearby sites like Yaxchilán, accessible via organized excursions that highlight interconnected Maya trade and political networks across Chiapas.[1] These efforts balance educational access with preservation, ensuring the site's longevity as a global heritage destination.

Paleontological Aspects

Geological Context

Palenque lies within the Sierra de Chiapas, a prominent fold-and-thrust belt in southeastern Mexico formed during the middle Miocene Chiapanecan Orogeny, resulting from the collision of the Tehuantepec Transform Ridge with the Middle America Trench. This tectonic regime produced WNW-trending folds and thrusts that shaped the regional topography, with the site's underlying strata consisting primarily of Paleocene Tenejapa Formation limestones overlying older Cretaceous sediments such as the Sierra Madre and La Angostura Formations. These Paleocene rocks, dated to approximately 63 Ma via strontium isotope analysis, comprise finely laminated yellow-beige limestones, dolomites, and marls that form the foundational layers exposed in local quarries like División del Norte and Belisario Domínguez near the site.[75][76][77] The karst landscape of the Palenque region arises from the dissolution of these soluble carbonate rocks, particularly the Paleocene limestones, which has sculpted a tropical cone karst terrain featuring sinkholes, underground aquifers, and extensive cave systems. This dissolution process, driven by acidic groundwater over millions of years, created subterranean networks that the ancient Maya incorporated into rituals, such as those evidenced in nearby cave sites. The resulting hydrology supports perennial springs and streams that divide the terrain, influencing both settlement patterns and water management at the archaeological site.[78][79] The geological setting directly impacted Maya construction at Palenque, where builders quarried the local Tenejapa limestones for temples, palaces, and sculptures, leveraging the soft, workable nature of these rocks while producing lime plaster from calcined slabs. Seismic activity, stemming from the ongoing tectonics of the Chiapas Fold and Thrust Belt, posed challenges to structural stability, as evidenced by the vulnerability of vaulted Maya architecture to regional earthquakes. These limestones also facilitated fossil preservation in certain strata, offering insights into Paleocene marine environments.[80][81][82] Palenque's proximity to the Usumacinta River delta, about 150 km to the north, contributed to post-abandonment landscape changes, with sediment deposition from the river system aiding in the site's gradual overgrowth by vegetation following its decline around AD 800. This alluviation, derived from erosion in the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, buried structures under layers of silt and soil, preserving them until modern rediscovery while accelerating jungle reclamation.[83][1]

Key Fossil Discoveries

One of the most notable paleontological contributions from the vicinity of Palenque comes from Paleocene marine deposits, where fish fossils provide critical insights into the early recovery of aquatic ecosystems following the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction event. In 2015, researchers documented two key localities: the División del Norte quarry, approximately 5 km southeast of Palenque, and the Belisario Domínguez quarry, about 9.5 km south of the site. These sites yielded well-preserved specimens of teleost fishes, including pycnodontiforms such as Pycnodus sp., osteoglossiforms like Phareodus sp. (a chanid relative), anguilliform eels, clupeiforms from the Clupeidae family, and perciforms tentatively identified as "serranids."[84] Dated to the early Paleocene (Danian stage, approximately 63 ± 1.5 million years ago), these fossils represent one of the closest vertebrate assemblages to the Chicxulub impact crater, highlighting rapid diversification in marine environments just after the mass extinction of non-avian dinosaurs.[84] In 2025, researchers described the first fossil representative of the Protanguillidae family from the El Divisorio locality near Palenque in the Tenejapa-Lacandón Formation (Danian stage), representing the oldest record of this living true eel lineage and illustrating the gradual evolution of modern eel traits.[85] Further paleontological interest arises from Eocene continental deposits in the surrounding hills of Chiapas, which have revealed a diverse faunal assemblage including mammals and reptiles, underscoring the region's role in tropical North American biodiversity during the Paleogene. A landmark 2015 study reported the first late Eocene continental vertebrate fauna from this area, collected from mudstones of the El Bosque Formation near Ocozocoautla (approximately 170 km northwest of Palenque).[86] The assemblage includes early rodents (e.g., paramyids), small artiodactyls, and a variety of reptiles such as crocodylians, lizards, snakes, and turtles, indicating a humid, forested paleoenvironment with fluvial influences. These finds, dated to around 37–34 million years ago, extend the known range of Paleogene mammals southward and provide evidence of faunal exchanges between North and South America prior to the formation of the Isthmus of Panama.[86] At the archaeological site itself, microfossils preserved within calcareous inclusions in Maya lime plasters offer a unique intersection of paleontology and ancient construction practices. A 2012 analysis of plasters from the Temple of the Inscriptions identified marine microfossils, including foraminifera, alongside macrofossils such as gastropods, bivalves, and cnidarians, derived from Paleocene dolomitic limestones of the Tenejapa-Lacandón Formation.[87] These inclusions suggest that the Maya selectively quarried fossil-rich sources for plaster production, with low-temperature processing preserving delicate structures and revealing local biostratigraphic details.[87] The scientific value of these discoveries lies in their illumination of post-extinction biotic recovery and the rare juxtaposition of Paleogene fossil beds with a major archaeological complex, contributing to broader understandings of regional biostratigraphy and paleoecology. However, excavations remain limited to protect the site's cultural heritage, prioritizing non-invasive methods like quarry surveys and plaster sampling to minimize disturbance.[84]
