Expedition Unknown is an American reality television series produced by Ping Pong Productions, which follows explorer, archeologist and television presenter Josh Gates as he investigates mysteries and legends. The 15th season premiered on June 18, 2025.
History
[edit]Expedition Unknown premiered on January 8, 2015, on the Travel Channel[1][2] and broadcast seasons 1-4.[3][4][5] At the start of the 5th season in 2018, the series moved to the Discovery Channel, which became its new home.[6]
In February 2020, a spinoff Expedition X premiered on Discovery. The series focuses on paranormal subjects and is hosted by Gates with Phil Torres, Jessica Chobot (seasons 1-7), and Heather Amaro (season 8-). The eighth season of Expedition X premiered on August 14, 2024.
In April 2020, Gates debuted Josh Gates Tonight, a talk show spinoff on Discovery which originated as replacement programming during the COVID-19 pandemic. The series features Gates interviewing celebrity guests via videoconference.[7][8][9] The series last aired in 2022 with its 5th season.
In May 2021, Gates and camera operator Brian Weed visited OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush to test out the Titan submersible, with plans to eventually film a dive to the Titanic wreck on the Titan for an episode of Expedition Unknown. A planned test dive in the Puget Sound with Gates and Weed onboard had to be scrubbed after multiple technical issues, and on the journey back Gates grew suspicious of Rush's lack of care for basic safety and brushing over the fact that the Titan was neither certified nor had been properly tested at the depths of the Titanic. Feeling it would be unethical to promote Oceangate to potential customers, Gates asked the network to cancel the planned episode, and the Titan later imploded during a dive to the Titanic in 2023, killing Rush and four others. Footage from Gates' visit was shown in the 2025 HBO documentary Implosion: The Titanic Sub Disaster, with contemporary interviews of Gates recalling his concerns.[10][11]

Premise and format
Expedition Unknown is an American reality television series produced by Ping Pong Productions for the Discovery Channel, in which host Josh Gates embarks on global expeditions to investigate historical mysteries, lost artifacts, legends, and unsolved events.[9] The core premise centers on Gates' role as an explorer and archaeologist who travels to remote locations worldwide, seeking evidence and insights into enigmatic stories that have puzzled historians and adventurers for centuries.[2][1] The format combines travelogue storytelling with archaeological inquiry and high-stakes adventure, typically structured in episodes lasting about 42 minutes.[10] Each installment begins with an engaging introduction to the central mystery, accompanied by historical background narrated through archival footage and expert commentary. This leads into Gates' field investigations, which include on-location explorations, interviews with local historians and specialists, hands-on participation in excavations or recreations, and dramatic elements to heighten the sense of discovery.[1] The episode builds tension through challenges encountered during the journey, such as navigating treacherous terrain or deciphering ancient clues, before culminating in revelations or unresolved questions that underscore the enduring allure of the unknown.[2] The series emphasizes themes of adventure and scientific exploration, often aiming to debunk myths while celebrating human curiosity and ingenuity in unraveling the past.[9] By integrating personal narration from Gates with visual spectacles of global locales, Expedition Unknown creates an immersive narrative that bridges entertainment with educational content on archaeology and history.[1]Host and production team
Josh Gates serves as the host and executive producer of Expedition Unknown, a role he has held since the series premiered in 2015.[11] An adventurer and archaeologist by training, Gates graduated from Tufts University with degrees in archaeology and drama, which inform his expertise in uncovering historical mysteries.[12] Prior to Expedition Unknown, he gained prominence as the host of Destination Truth on Syfy and the Travel Channel, where he investigated global legends and cryptids, honing a presenting style that combines scholarly insight with humor and willingness to undertake physical challenges in rugged terrains.[13] Gates' personal interests in ancient history and cryptozoology often guide the selection of expeditions, allowing him to blend rigorous research with on-location adventures that emphasize discovery and storytelling.[2] The production team behind Expedition Unknown is led by executive producers including Gates himself, Casey Brumels, and Brad Kuhlman, who oversee the series' development and creative direction through their company, Ping Pong Productions.[14] Directors such as Brea Tisdale Brumels, Douglas Segal, and others handle episode-specific filming, while recurring cinematographers Evan B. Stone and Brian C. Weed capture the high-stakes visuals in remote settings.[15] The series frequently consults episode-specific experts, including archaeologists and historians, to provide authentic context for investigations into lost artifacts and unsolved enigmas, ensuring a balance between entertainment and educational value.[16] Gates' deep involvement extends beyond hosting, as he contributes to expedition planning and production decisions that prioritize immersive, globe-trotting narratives.[17] The crew operates as a small, agile unit to navigate challenging environments, often consisting of a core team of cinematographers, producers, and support staff who adapt to logistical demands in isolated locations.[18] Safety protocols are integral, with emphasis on training, equipment checks, and risk assessments for hazardous sites like minefields or deep-water dives, reflecting the team's commitment to responsible filmmaking amid unpredictable conditions.[19]History
Development and launch
Following the conclusion of Josh Gates' Syfy series Destination Truth in August 2012, Gates created Expedition Unknown as a new adventure reality program centered on investigating historical mysteries and archaeological enigmas.[20] Gates, an archaeologist with a degree from Tufts University, drew on his background to shift the focus from paranormal pursuits to tangible explorations of lost artifacts and ancient sites.[5] In April 2014, the Travel Channel greenlit the series for an initial order of six one-hour episodes, produced by Ping Pong Productions, with Gates serving as host and executive producer.[21] Filming for the first season began in 2015, capturing on-location expeditions to remote global sites, including searches for Amelia Earhart's lost plane in the Pacific and the sunken ships of Captain Morgan's fleet off the coast of Panama.[22][23] The series launched with a two-hour premiere episode on January 8, 2015, on the Travel Channel, marking the debut of its 13-episode first season that explored legends like the Temple of Doom in India and the City of Gold in the Amazon.[24][9] The show later transitioned to the Discovery Channel in 2018, expanding its reach while maintaining its core format of high-stakes historical quests.[25]Renewals and evolution
Following the successful premiere of its first season on Travel Channel in January 2015, Expedition Unknown received a quick renewal for a second season later that year, with new episodes beginning in October 2015.[26] The show's popularity led to further renewals, including a third season announced in March 2016 due to strong viewership performance.[27] A fourth season renewal followed in March 2017, solidifying its place on the network. In 2018, ahead of its fifth season, the series transitioned from Travel Channel to Discovery Channel, aiming to reach a broader audience through the larger network's platform.[28] This shift marked a significant expansion, with the show maintaining consistent annual season orders thereafter, culminating in 16 seasons by November 2025, when season 16 premiered.[29] Episodes became available on streaming services like Discovery+ following Warner Bros. Discovery's integration of platforms, enhancing accessibility for viewers.[6] The production of Expedition Unknown evolved over time, incorporating greater emphasis on scientific analysis and collaborations with experts starting after the third season, moving beyond initial adventure-focused mystery hunts to include archaeological consultations and forensic techniques in investigations.[2] For example, in season 4 (2017–18), the show highlighted expeditions to environmentally vulnerable sites, such as the permafrost regions in Siberia's Batagay crater affected by thawing due to global warming, underscoring the impact of climate change on historical preservation of mammoth remains.[30][31] The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted filming starting in early 2020, leading to delays for subsequent seasons, such as season 9 (which premiered in July 2021), and prompting the creation of the spinoff talk show Josh Gates Tonight in April 2020 to feature virtual interviews with experts and contributors from home.[32][12] This adaptation allowed the franchise to continue engaging audiences remotely during lockdowns, with some episodes incorporating virtual elements for historical recreations and expert discussions. The move to Discovery Channel coincided with production expansions, including increased budgets that enabled the use of advanced technologies such as drones for aerial surveys and 3D LiDAR mapping for site analysis, first prominently featured in season 5's exploration of the ancient Mayan city of El Mirador.[33] These enhancements improved the visual documentation of remote locations and supported more precise archaeological findings throughout subsequent seasons.[34]Main series episodes

Building briefly on the scientific emphasis of Season 3, this installment incorporated advanced archaeological techniques, such as ground-penetrating radar and drone surveys, to probe mysteries like the construction of prehistoric monuments and early transatlantic voyages. The season averaged approximately 900,000 viewers per episode, reflecting steady audience engagement amid the channel's adventure programming slate.[52][53][54] The episodes delved into a range of ancient and historical pursuits, emphasizing international collaborations with local experts and authorities to access restricted sites and employ cutting-edge technology. For instance, in episodes focused on Viking history, Gates partnered with Norwegian historians and American archaeologists to examine rune stones and settlement sites, while the Stonehenge investigation involved UK-based researchers for on-site excavations. This season represented a heightening of global partnerships, enabling unprecedented access to cultural heritage locations across Europe and the Americas. A unique event was the collaboration with British antiquities officials, which granted rare permission for non-invasive scans near protected prehistoric structures like Stonehenge, yielding new insights into megalithic engineering. The production's first consideration for Emmy recognition in informational series categories underscored its rising production quality and educational impact, though formal nominations arrived in later years.[55][56][57] The following table lists the season's episodes, including titles, air dates, and brief synopses based on official descriptions:| Episode | Title | Air Date | Synopsis |

Special episodes
Extra Finds (2016–17)
"Extra Finds" was a series of short-form specials accompanying Expedition Unknown, consisting of multiple episodes released from late 2015 through 2017 on Discovery Digital platforms.[135] Each installment lasted 5 to 10 minutes and showcased unaired footage and supplementary discoveries from prior season investigations, including peripheral artifacts encountered during field expeditions that could not be incorporated into the main broadcasts due to time constraints.[136] Produced as web exclusives, the series aimed to deepen viewer engagement by offering intimate glimpses into the production process, with host Josh Gates providing narration that included personal reflections on the unexpected finds.[135] Key episodes highlighted bonus material from prominent mysteries; for instance, "City of Gold" presented side explorations tied to searches for legendary sunken cities like Atlantis, emphasizing minor relics and alternative theories derived from underwater surveys in the Bahamas.[137] Similarly, episodes such as "Secrets of the Nazca," "Mayan Apocalypse," "Amelia Earhart," and "Captain Morgan's Gold," followed this format by revealing extra investigative paths, like ritual artifacts from Peruvian lines or submerged pirate relics off Jamaica's coast, all narrated by Gates to underscore their significance in broader expedition narratives.[137] Extending into 2017, additional episodes like "The Lost Tomb of Attila the Hun" continued the tradition, incorporating fresh unaired segments from ongoing digs to maintain fan interest between full seasons.[135]Hunt for the Yeti (2016)
"Hunt for the Yeti" is a four-part special miniseries in the Expedition Unknown franchise, marking the show's first extended exploration of cryptozoology. Premiering on October 5, 2016, and concluding on October 26, 2016, the episodes aired weekly on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/PT on the Travel Channel. Hosted by adventurer Josh Gates, the series follows his quest through the remote regions of Nepal and Bhutan in the Himalayas to investigate legends of the Yeti, a mythical ape-like creature said to inhabit high-altitude areas. Gates, drawing from prior encounters with potential Yeti evidence during treks in the region years earlier, aims to collect scientific samples and eyewitness accounts to determine if the creature is real or folklore.[138][139] The special begins with the episode "Return of the Yeti," where Gates starts in Kathmandu, Nepal, consulting geneticist Todd Disotell in New York beforehand to prepare for DNA analysis of any biological samples. He then ventures into the Himalayas, interviewing local Sherpas and mountaineers about recent sightings and historical tales, while examining alleged Yeti footprints and collecting hair samples for testing. In "The Monster and the Mountain," Gates ascends toward Mount Everest, exploring caves and high passes with expert guides, casting suspicious tracks, and discussing the creature's possible relation to known primates like the Himalayan brown bear. The production involved specialized high-altitude equipment, including oxygen supplies and cold-weather gear, to facilitate safe navigation in elevations exceeding 15,000 feet.[140][141] Subsequent episodes shift to Bhutan for deeper investigation. "Out of Thin Air" sees Gates trekking isolated forests, setting up bait stations with trail cameras in hopes of capturing footage, and speaking with Bhutanese historians about ancient Yeti depictions in folklore and art. The finale, "Unmasking the Myth," involves rafting into Bhutan's remotest valleys, where Gates uncovers what he describes as compelling but inconclusive evidence, such as unusual vocalizations and more hair specimens. DNA tests on collected samples later suggest bear origins rather than an unknown species, leaving the Yeti's existence ambiguous without definitive proof. This special builds on the show's earlier cryptid-themed segments by providing a focused, narrative-driven hunt rather than standalone episodes.[142]Hunt for Extraterrestrials (2017)
"Hunt for Extraterrestrials" is a four-part mini-series special within Expedition Unknown, hosted by Josh Gates, that premiered on October 4, 2017, on the Travel Channel.[143] The series follows Gates as he travels over 50,000 miles across four continents to investigate extraterrestrial legends and UFO mysteries, marking the show's first major exploration of paranormal topics on this scale.[144] Accompanying the episodes was a companion aftershow titled Hunt for Extraterrestrials: After the Hunt.[9] In the premiere episode, "Close Encounters," Gates begins at NASA's Ames Research Center in California, where he examines ongoing searches for extraterrestrial life and rides in a prototype Mars rover. He then travels to Chile's Atacama Desert, a hotspot for UFO sightings, joining astronomers and enthusiasts for night sky vigils using advanced telescopes to scan for anomalous lights and potential alien signals.[145] Subsequent episodes expand this inquiry: "Ancient Visitors" takes Gates to [Easter Island](/page/Easter Island), where he consults archaeologists and reviews theories linking the moai statues to extraterrestrial intervention, including examinations of ancient petroglyphs and skeletal remains for unusual anomalies.[146] The series continues with "Abducted," in which Gates investigates alien abduction claims in the United States, interviewing eyewitnesses and self-proclaimed abductees about their experiences, while reviewing declassified government documents on reported incidents. The finale, "Area 51," focuses on the secretive Nevada military base, where Gates explores restricted zones, speaks with former personnel, and analyzes historical UFO crash reports from nearby Roswell, New Mexico. Throughout, Gates conducts on-site experiments, such as infrared imaging during vigils, to test sighting claims. While the investigations often uncover evidence of hoaxes, misidentifications of aircraft or natural phenomena, and cultural influences on legends, the series maintains an open-ended perspective, highlighting unexplained cases and the ongoing scientific pursuit of extraterrestrial intelligence. Gates emphasizes witness testimonies and archival footage to build a narrative that balances skepticism with intrigue, without conclusive proof of alien visitations.Search for the Afterlife (2018)
"Expedition Unknown: Search for the Afterlife" is a four-part special miniseries that premiered on the Discovery Channel on October 7, 2018, with subsequent episodes airing weekly on Sundays at 10 p.m. ET/PT through October 28.[147] Hosted by adventurer Josh Gates, the series delves into humanity's enduring question of what occurs after death, spanning investigations across four continents into near-death experiences, spiritual rituals, and paranormal phenomena.[147] Each episode combines historical context, scientific perspectives, and firsthand encounters to explore diverse cultural beliefs about the afterlife, from ancient burial practices to modern mediumship.[1] In the first episode, "Heaven and Hell," Gates visits the ancient Roman "Gate to Hell" at Hierapolis in Turkey, a volcanic site historically believed to be an entrance to the underworld that still emits toxic gases fatal to birds and small animals.[148] He then travels to New York City to consult a medical doctor researching how consciousness might persist after clinical death and meets with a renowned medium who attempts to connect him with spirits, including a personal message from beyond.[148] The second episode, "Death and Beyond," shifts to reincarnation themes, where Gates observes a traditional Tibetan sky burial in the Himalayas, a ritual where bodies are exposed to vultures to facilitate the soul's transition.[149] This is followed by an introduction to ayahuasca ceremonies in the Amazon rainforest, where shamans use the hallucinogenic brew to purportedly bridge the living and spirit worlds.[149] The third installment, "Edge of Existence," examines preservation of the dead in Indonesia's Toraja region, where Gates interacts with a community that houses mummified ancestors in cliffside tombs and periodically reburies them in elaborate ceremonies reflecting beliefs in ongoing familial bonds post-mortem.[150] He also consults skeptic magician Penn Jillette in Las Vegas to debate the validity of paranormal claims, contrasting believer perspectives encountered earlier in the series.[150] The finale, "Crossing Over," culminates in a ghost hunt aboard the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, California—one of the world's most haunted locations—where Gates teams up with investigators Amy Bruni, Adam Berry, and Grant Wilson to test electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) devices and other tools for spirit communication.[151] Throughout, Gates undergoes hypnosis sessions to explore past-life regression and reflects on his ayahuasca experience, ultimately offering a balanced verdict on the evidence for an afterlife while tying into broader paranormal themes from prior seasons.[147] The special emphasizes respectful engagement with global traditions, blending adventure with philosophical inquiry.[147]Expedition: Back to the Future (2021)
"Expedition: Back to the Future" is a four-part documentary miniseries produced as a spin-off of Expedition Unknown, which premiered exclusively on discovery+ on March 15, 2021.[152][153] In the series, host Josh Gates embarks on a quest to locate the original DeLorean time machine prop from the Back to the Future film trilogy, joined by actor Christopher Lloyd, who portrayed Dr. Emmett "Doc" Brown in the movies.[154] The production blends adventure exploration with film history, as Gates and Lloyd travel to key locations associated with the franchise, including Hollywood studios, fan collections, and the DeLorean factory site in Ireland.[155] This time-travel-themed special highlights the cultural impact of the 1980s sci-fi classic while showcasing Gates' investigative approach to uncovering lost artifacts.[2] The series unfolds across four episodes, each advancing the search for the iconic vehicle. In the premiere episode, "Hunting the Lost Time Machine," Gates and Lloyd meet screenwriter Bob Gale in California to discuss the props' history before heading to a massive collector's warehouse in Orlando, Florida, where they examine several DeLorean variants.[156] Subsequent installments, such as "Back to the Source" and "Back in Timeline," take the duo to Universal Studios for behind-the-scenes insights and to Northern Ireland to explore the DeLorean Motor Company's ruins and interview former employees about the car's production.[156] The finale, "Back to the Future Part IV: Back in Timeline," culminates in Massachusetts, where the team tracks down a screen-used time machine, arranges its restoration, and reflects on the franchise's legacy with Lloyd.[156] Throughout, the episodes incorporate interviews with filmmakers, prop experts, and superfans, emphasizing the DeLorean's transformation from a failed automobile to a pop culture symbol.[152] Filmed amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the miniseries adapted to production challenges by focusing on domestic and international sites with logistical planning for travel and interviews.[157] Gates employs his signature exploratory style, testing futuristic replicas and simulating time-travel scenarios to engage viewers, while Lloyd provides nostalgic commentary that bridges the series' adventure elements with cinematic reverence.[154] The special received positive reception for its enthusiastic tribute to the Back to the Future saga, earning an 8.1/10 rating on IMDb from over 695 users.[153]Shark Week specials
Expedition Unknown has featured several crossover specials during Discovery Channel's annual Shark Week event, blending the series' investigative style with marine-themed adventures centered on shipwrecks, prehistoric predators, and shark behaviors. These episodes, produced between 2019 and 2024, highlight host Josh Gates conducting high-stakes dives in shark-infested waters, often in collaboration with marine biologists and paleontologists to explore historical and scientific mysteries of the deep sea. The specials emphasize rigorous fieldwork, including the use of advanced tracking technology and fossil hunts, to uncover evidence related to legendary sea creatures and wartime losses. A 2025 Shark Week special appeared under the spin-off Expedition Files.[158][159] One of the earliest specials, "Expedition Unknown: Megalodon," aired on July 28, 2019, as part of Shark Week. In this episode, Gates travels to Mexico's Baja Peninsula and South Africa's coastal regions to investigate the extinction of the megalodon, a massive prehistoric shark estimated to have reached lengths of up to 60 feet. He dives alongside shark experts to examine modern shark hotspots for behavioral clues and searches arid deserts and ocean floors for fossilized teeth, revealing insights into environmental factors that may have led to the species' demise around 3.6 million years ago. The special underscores the megalodon's dominance as an apex predator through reconstructions and expert analysis from paleontologists.[158][160] In 2021, "Expedition Unknown: Shark Trek" premiered on July 12, marking a unique collaboration with actor William Shatner, known for his role in Star Trek. Gates and Shatner venture to the Bahamas' Atlantis resort to confront nurse and tiger sharks in controlled yet intense encounters, aiming to demystify human fear of these animals. The episode combines personal storytelling—Shatner overcoming his own apprehensions—with educational dives that explore shark sensory capabilities and ecological roles, filmed in high-production underwater sequences to capture close interactions without baiting. This special highlights the therapeutic and scientific value of facing apex predators in their environment.[159][161] The 2024 installment, "Sharks vs. Nazis in Paradise," aired on July 10 during Shark Week, focusing on a World War II-era mystery off Florida's coast. Gates teams with shark biologist Tristan Guttridge to locate the wreckage of the Holtwilson, an American cargo ship torpedoed by a German U-boat in 1942. Employing acoustic tagging on sharks to map potential sites in the Gulf of Mexico, the team conducts deep dives amid hammerhead and other species, uncovering artifacts that confirm historical accounts of the sinking. The episode integrates archival footage and expert consultations to contextualize the event within the Battle of the Atlantic. These Shark Week specials have contributed to elevated viewership for the franchise, with the 2024 event drawing 476,000 live viewers for "Sharks vs. Nazis in Paradise" amid overall Shark Week audiences exceeding 25 million across platforms.[162][2][163] Most recently, under the spin-off Expedition Files, "Shark Files" (also titled "Blood in the Water"), which aired on July 23, 2025, delves into enigmatic shark-related historical cases. Gates examines the real-life inspirations behind Peter Benchley's Jaws, including the 1916 New Jersey shark attacks, and investigates bizarre incidents like a tiger shark regurgitating a human arm in an Australian case from 1935. Through archival research and consultations with marine historians, the special connects these events to broader patterns in shark-human interactions, emphasizing forensic evidence and eyewitness testimonies without sensationalism.[164][165][163]Aftershows
