Wikipedia is a free multilingual wiki-based open-source online encyclopedia edited and maintained by a community of volunteer editors, started on 15 January 2001 as an English-language encyclopedia. Non-English editions followed in the same year: the German and Catalan editions were created on 16 March,[1] the French edition was created on 23 March,[2] and the Swedish edition was created on 23 May.[3] As of October 2025, Wikipedia articles have been created in 357 editions, with 343 currently active and 14 closed.[4]
The Meta-Wiki language committee manages policies on creating new Wikimedia projects. To be eligible, a language must have a valid ISO 639 code, be "sufficiently unique", and have a "sufficient number of fluent users".[5]
Variations in editions
[edit]Wikipedia projects vary in how they divide dialects and variants. For example, the English Wikipedia includes most modern varieties of English including American English and British English.[6][7] Similarly, the Catalan Wikipedia encompasses all Catalan variants, like Valencian, Balearic or France's Catalan; Spanish Wikipedia includes both Peninsular Spanish and Latin American Spanish;[8] and the Portuguese Wikipedia includes both European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese.[9] In contrast, some languages have multiple Wikipedias. For example, Serbo-Croatian encompasses four Wikipedia editions, Serbo-Croatian and three different standardized varieties (Bosnian, Croatian, and Serbian).[10]
Additionally, some Wikipedia projects apply different approaches to orthography. For instance, the Chinese Wikipedia automatically transliterates between six standard forms: three using simplified Chinese characters (Mainland China, Malaysia, and Singapore) and three using traditional Chinese characters (Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau).[11][12] And rather than relying on transliteration, Belarusian has separate Wikipedia projects for the official Narkamaŭka and Taraškievica orthographies.[13]
Wikipedia edition codes
[edit]Each Wikipedia project has a code, which is used as a subdomain of wikipedia.org. The codes mostly conform to ISO 639-1 two-letter codes or ISO 639-3 three-letter codes, with preference given to a two-letter code if available.[14] For example, en stands for English in ISO 639-1, so the English Wikipedia is at en.wikipedia.org.
Wikipedia editions
[edit]The table below lists all the language editions of Wikipedia roughly sorted by the number of active users (registered users who have made at least one edit in the last thirty days).[15]
The Nostalgia Wikipedia is an archive of the English Wikipedia's initial display.

Origins and Expansion
The English Wikipedia was launched on January 15, 2001, as the inaugural edition of the project, initially serving as a collaborative online encyclopedia focused on English-language content.[6] The multilingual expansion began shortly thereafter, with the German edition created on March 16, 2001, marking the first non-English version, followed rapidly by Catalan, French, Swedish, and Italian editions later that month.[7] By the end of 2001, the project had grown to 18 language editions, demonstrating early momentum driven by volunteer interest in adapting the platform to diverse linguistic needs.[7] Key milestones in the expansion included reaching 100 language editions by December 2004, reflecting the project's growing global appeal and the addition of editions in non-Indo-European languages such as Japanese, which was established in May 2001. The number of editions surpassed 200 by mid-2006 and exceeded 250 languages by December of that year, with further growth pushing beyond 300 editions during the 2010s as volunteer communities proliferated worldwide.[8][9] This rapid proliferation was facilitated by the Wikimedia Foundation, established on June 20, 2003, which took over hosting and provided essential support for creating new editions through the localization of the underlying MediaWiki software.[10] The Foundation's efforts ensured that MediaWiki could handle translations and interfaces in over 350 languages, including complex scripts and right-to-left writing systems.[11] Early challenges in this expansion centered on technical limitations, particularly the support for non-Latin scripts, which were not always well-integrated into the initial software setup, complicating contributions in languages like Japanese or Arabic.[12] Volunteer-driven translations played a pivotal role in overcoming these hurdles, as community members manually adapted content and interfaces without centralized coordination, relying on collaborative editing to build each edition from scratch.[13] This grassroots approach, while innovative, often led to uneven development across editions until improved localization tools emerged in the mid-2000s.Current Scope and Statistics
As of November 2025, there are 357 Wikipedia editions in total, comprising 343 active editions and 14 closed ones.[1] Among the active editions, 76 have surpassed 100,000 articles, highlighting a concentration of substantial content in larger language versions while smaller editions often maintain fewer than 1,000 articles.[1][3] Across all active editions, the combined total exceeds 65 million articles, reflecting the cumulative encyclopedic effort since the project's inception.[1] Registered users number over 109 million as of 2023, with active editors contributing to billions of total edits across Wikimedia projects, though these figures vary by edition scale. These aggregate metrics underscore Wikipedia's role as a vast, multilingual knowledge repository, though they are dynamic and best verified through real-time data from the Wikimedia Foundation. Recent growth trends show a modest expansion, with 5 to 10 new editions activated annually from incubators, including the re-launch of the Central Kanuri edition in 2025, bringing the active count from around 330 in 2023 to the current 343. Since 2023, the integration of AI tools, such as large language models for drafting articles, has accelerated content creation in underrepresented languages, with estimates indicating that up to 4% of new articles in major editions incorporate significant AI-generated elements. However, this has raised concerns about content quality and editor motivation, prompting Wikimedia policies to emphasize human oversight.[14] Older sources often report outdated statistics, such as totals from 2023 or earlier, emphasizing the necessity of consulting live Wikimedia databases for precision.Technical Framework
Language Edition Codes
The Wikimedia Foundation employs standardized language codes to uniquely identify each edition of its projects, including Wikipedia, primarily drawing from the ISO 639-1 and ISO 639-3 standards. ISO 639-1 provides two-letter codes for major languages, such as "en" for English and "zh" for Chinese, while ISO 639-3 offers three-letter codes for a broader range of languages, including those without ISO 639-1 equivalents, like "ace" for Achinese. These codes ensure consistent identification across Wikimedia sites and align with international linguistic nomenclature.[15] When standard ISO codes are unavailable or inadequate—such as for constructed or simplified variants—custom codes are assigned by the Wikimedia Language Committee. For instance, "simple" denotes Simple English, a controlled vocabulary version of English Wikipedia, while other non-ISO cases include codes for fictional languages or historical variants. The committee, composed of linguists and community representatives, evaluates and approves these assignments to maintain interoperability with global standards like BCP 47. Primary codes are typically two letters for ISO 639-1 languages and three letters for ISO 639-3, with variants appended using hyphens for sub-divisions, such as script-specific forms. Examples of committee assignments include "als" for Alemannic German (a legacy special code; the ISO 639-3 code is gsw) and "pdc" for Pennsylvania German.[16][15] The system has evolved to address linguistic complexities and community needs. Initially relying on early ISO assignments, codes have been refined over time; for Serbian, the base code "sr" (ISO 639-1) was supplemented with variants like "sr-el" for the Ekavian dialect and script-specific extensions such as "sr-Cyrl" for Cyrillic, reflecting distinctions in usage without creating separate primary codes. Proposals for new codes follow structured rules: requesters must demonstrate a valid ISO 639 code (or justify a special one), prove linguistic distinctiveness from existing editions, and garner community support through the Language Committee review process, which includes voting on eligibility. This ensures scalability while preventing fragmentation. For example, in June 2025, the Standard Moroccan Tamazight Wiktionary (code zgh) was approved, though technical delays postponed its launch.[16][17][18] Existing lists of Wikimedia language codes may provide incomplete coverage, particularly for approvals after 2023, as the ISO 639-3 registry continues to expand for endangered languages. For example, ongoing committee discussions in 2024–2025 have considered codes like "mvy" for Indus-Kohistani, an endangered Indo-Aryan language, highlighting efforts to support revitalization projects. Updates to official documentation, such as the special codes list last revised in June 2025, underscore the dynamic nature of this system.[18][16]Access and Identification Methods
Different Wikipedia language editions are primarily accessed through subdomain-based URLs, where the two-letter language code precedes the project domain, such as "en.wikipedia.org" for the English edition or "fr.wikipedia.org" for the French edition. This structure allows direct navigation to specific editions by replacing the language code in the URL. Additionally, path-based access is supported within a single edition's site, enabling users to reach content from another edition via formats like "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/fr:Article_Title", which treats the language code prefix as part of the page title to facilitate inter-edition linking without changing subdomains. Interwiki links further simplify navigation, using the syntax "[[code:Article_Title]]" in wiki markup, which generates hyperlinks to the corresponding page in the target edition, such as linking from English to German content.[19] Programmatic access to Wikipedia editions relies on the MediaWiki API, where endpoints are edition-specific and follow the subdomain pattern, for example, "https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php" for querying English edition data. Developers can specify language codes in API parameters, such as "action=query&meta=langlinks&titles=Article" to retrieve interlanguage links across editions, allowing automated retrieval of edition-specific information like page content, revisions, or statistics. This API structure ensures that queries are directed to the appropriate edition's database, supporting applications that aggregate or compare data from multiple Wikipedias.[20] User identification and switching between editions are facilitated by tools like the Universal Language Selector, integrated into the wikipedia.org portal, which displays a searchable list of over 300 editions for direct selection. In the official Wikipedia mobile apps for iOS and Android, users can add preferred languages in settings and switch editions seamlessly during browsing, with the app maintaining a feed customized to selected languages. For languages with variants, such as Chinese (code "zh"), the system handles conversions between Simplified and Traditional scripts automatically based on user preferences or regional defaults, ensuring consistent access without manual reconfiguration.[21][22]Catalog of Editions
Active Language Editions
The active language editions of Wikipedia represent the core of the project's multilingual encyclopedic effort, encompassing fully operational versions where content creation and editing occur regularly. As of November 2025, there are 343 such editions, each identified by a unique ISO 639 language code and hosted on subdomains like lang.wikipedia.org. These editions vary widely in scale, from massive repositories with millions of articles to smaller ones focused on niche or endangered languages, all contributing to Wikipedia's goal of free knowledge in diverse tongues. Statistics on articles, edits, and active users are tracked by the Wikimedia Foundation, providing insights into community vitality.[1] The largest editions dominate in terms of content volume and user engagement, often launched in the project's early years. Below is a table of the top 10 active editions, sorted by article count descending, including founding year for context. Data reflects totals as of November 2025, with articles denoting main namespace entries, edits as cumulative revisions, and active users as those with at least five edits in the past 30 days.| Rank | Language (English Name) | Code | Articles | Total Edits | Active Users | Founded |

Special and Incubator Editions
The Wikimedia Incubator serves as a centralized platform for developing and testing prospective language editions of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects before they are granted independent wikis. Hosted at incubator.wikimedia.org, it allows communities to build content, establish policies, and demonstrate viability in a shared environment.[24] As of October 2025, the Incubator hosts over 100 active Wikipedia test projects, covering a diverse array of languages, particularly minority and low-resource ones. Representative examples include the Afar Wikipedia (code: aa), Arberesh Albanian (aae), and Antiguan and Barbudan Creole (aig), each at varying stages of development with article counts ranging from a few dozen to several thousand. In 2025, notable progress included the creation of the Dolgan Wikipedia (dlg) in May and the Sasak Wikipedia (sas) in June, while the Magahi Wikipedia (mag) awaits final approval following community demonstrations of sustained activity. These efforts highlight ongoing support for underrepresented languages, though some project statuses remain outdated due to delays in updating official records, and recent approvals for minority languages such as Dolgan have not yet been fully reflected in broader Wikimedia statistics.[25][25][26] In addition to active tests, 14 Wikipedia editions have been closed since the project's inception, primarily due to insufficient editor engagement and low article production. Nine of these were relocated to the Incubator for potential revival. Historical examples include the Old English Wikipedia (ang), closed in 2011 after failing to attract consistent contributors; the Kwanyama Wikipedia, discontinued in July 2007 amid negligible activity; and the Muscogee Wikipedia, also closed in July 2007 for similar reasons. Closures typically follow formal proposals reviewed by the Wikimedia community, emphasizing criteria like sustained editing over time.[1][27][28] Special variants of Wikipedia extend its accessibility beyond standard language editions. The Simple English Wikipedia (code: simple) is a distinct edition optimized for English language learners and younger readers, employing a controlled vocabulary of about 1,000 basic words to simplify complex topics while maintaining encyclopedic rigor; it operates as a full-fledged wiki with over 276,000 articles as of November 2025. Complementing this, Wikijunior functions as a Wikimedia initiative within Wikibooks, producing illustrated, child-friendly non-fiction books on subjects like science and history, initiated in 2004 to foster early literacy without the full editorial demands of a Wikipedia.[29][30] Test wikis support technical experimentation and quality assurance for Wikipedia's infrastructure. The primary test.wikipedia.org wiki runs the same MediaWiki software version as production sites, enabling isolated trials of features and bug fixes within the live cluster. Similarly, the Beta Cluster (including instances like en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org) provides a staging environment for upcoming code deployments, allowing developers to simulate multi-wiki interactions before rollout; it hosts replicas of major editions for comprehensive testing. These non-public tools ensure stability across the 343 active Wikipedia editions without impacting user-facing content.[31]Comparative Analysis
Variations in Scale and Activity
The scale of Wikipedia editions varies dramatically, with the English edition encompassing 7,087,073 articles as of November 2025, representing a substantial portion of the project's total content. In contrast, many of the smaller active editions maintain fewer than 100 articles, reflecting challenges in sustaining contributions for languages with limited digital resources. These disparities stem primarily from differences in speaker population size, internet accessibility, and the presence of organized local editor communities, which enable larger editions like German and French—each with hundreds of thousands of articles—to thrive while smaller ones struggle to expand. Collectively, all editions contain over 67 million articles as of November 2025.[32][33][1] Editor activity further highlights these imbalances, as only a select few editions sustain robust engagement levels. The English Wikipedia, for instance, reports approximately 130,000 monthly active editors as of November 2025, dwarfing the figures for most others, where German and French editions each exceed 20,000 but the majority hover below 1,000 monthly active editors. This uneven distribution results in varied edit rates, with high-activity editions averaging hundreds of daily contributions, while low-activity ones face sporadic updates and elevated risks of unaddressed vandalism due to insufficient monitoring.[34][5][1] Several factors drive differential growth across editions, including the strength of local Wikimedia chapters, targeted funding, and community-driven events. Initiatives like Wiki Loves Monuments, an annual international photography contest, have boosted contributions by encouraging uploads of cultural heritage images and related articles, particularly in regions with active participants. The Hindi edition exemplifies surging growth post-2020, propelled by expanded internet access in India and dedicated community efforts, which have increased its articles from around 40,000 in 2016 to approximately 200,000 as of November 2025, representing a modest share of the total.[35][36][1] Data on emerging influences, such as AI-assisted editing in 2025, remains incomplete for smaller editions, though preliminary analyses indicate potential benefits in content generation alongside risks of quality dilution and editor burnout from managing AI outputs.[5][37]Regional and Linguistic Diversity
The distribution of Wikipedia editions reflects significant regional imbalances, with Europe hosting the majority of active language versions. As of November 2025, over 150 editions are associated with European languages, predominantly from the Indo-European family, forming regional hubs such as the Scandinavian languages (e.g., Swedish, Norwegian, Danish) and Romance languages (e.g., French, Spanish, Italian), which benefit from high editor engagement and historical linguistic ties.[38] In contrast, Africa accounts for approximately 20 active editions, mainly in Niger-Congo languages like Swahili and Yoruba, though coverage remains limited due to fewer contributors and infrastructural challenges. Asia features around 100 editions, with concentrations in Indo-European (e.g., Hindi, Persian) and Sino-Tibetan (e.g., Chinese, Burmese) languages, while Oceania has fewer than 10, primarily Austronesian tongues such as Māori and Samoan.[1] Linguistically, Wikipedia's editions are dominated by the Indo-European family, which comprises about 58% of the 357 active versions, encompassing languages spoken across Europe, South Asia, and parts of the Americas.[39] The Niger-Congo family, prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa, represents roughly 6% of editions, highlighting underrepresentation relative to the family's global speaker base of over 700 million. Other underrepresented families include Austronesian (about 5% of editions, despite 1,200+ languages in the Pacific and Southeast Asia) and various sign languages (fewer than 10 editions worldwide, such as American Sign Language), which face barriers in digital scripting and community mobilization.[39] Wikimedia Foundation initiatives aim to address these disparities through targeted grants and programs for underrepresented regions. In 2025, the Free Knowledge Africa Development Support grant allocated funding to enhance content in African languages like Igbo, Hausa, Yoruba, Swahili, and Kinyarwanda, supporting editor training and article creation to boost participation from low-resource linguistic communities.[40] Broader efforts, such as the Wiki Loves Mother Tongue campaign, promoted indigenous language content globally from February to March 2025, emphasizing sustainable development through multilingual knowledge equity.[41] Despite these advances, gender and cultural biases persist in coverage across editions. Scholarly analysis of over 1 million biographical articles from 12 major language versions reveals that female subjects receive 0.04 units lower "global consensus" scores compared to males, indicating systemic underrepresentation and quality disparities in content about women from non-Western regions.[42] Cultural biases further manifest in uneven sourcing, where Western-centric narratives overshadow indigenous perspectives in African and Asian editions. Post-2023 expansions in Asia and Oceania have been incremental but sparsely documented, with existing editions like Cebuano expanded via automated tools, though comprehensive metrics on dialect variants remain unavailable, complicating assessments of true linguistic breadth.[32]References
